There's an incredible amount of confusion on the naming conventions, and justifiably so. I'll throw my understanding into the ring. When Anko Itosu created the Pinan forms, the kata we see here was called Pinan Shodan. When Funakoshi brought them to Japan, he renamed them the "Heian" katas and reversed the order of shodan and nidan so that the simpler of the two (Pinan Nidan) became the first kata in the series -- Heian Shodan. Hence, what we see here goes counter to the historical naming conventions, but it is the Shito-ryu version of the kata and is properly labelled as a Pinan form. They just put the simpler one first, which follows Funakoshi's logic. It may, however, confuse fellow Pinan kata practitioners. It has been a dilemma with those katas for a long time.

Pinan Sho Dan. This is the second Pinan kata that is taught. Pinan Ni Dan is the first, because it is easier. Ni means Second. This brings a lot of confusion, because Pinian Ni Dan is taught as first Kata and Sho Dan as second. At least this is what I am told :-) (I practice shitoryu stile)

This is so odd. In shotokan this Kata's called Heian Nidan, while here it is Pinan Shodan. And what Shotokan calls Heain Shodan is your Pinan Nidan. How odd is that. :)

They are interchanged depending on the system. Founders of new styles make all sorts of changes. You must be new to Karate. Do a little google history and you can see where they got switched You have a great day.

some places mix up the definitions, since this is a seemingly harder kata they say this one is pinan nidan and the other one closely relating to kihon kata is pinan shodan and it works fine

yes and i understand different clubs differ there kata's slightly but giving a kata a name from another takes the meaning of that kata away they just dont match, its like saying Shotokan means way for all when it doesnt, the meaning ony goes with Shukokai as that is what it is, so you cant say Shodan is Nidan because it just isnt.

Yes this is the pinan shodan. Why are you guys doing little kiais at every single move? Doesn't that waste energy? I do appreciate your sharp movements tho.
