In today’s experiment we have one of our volunteers, Tiffany, show us what happens to pine cones when wet! Pine cones hold the seeds. When the weather is wet, this isn’t optimal for seed dispersal. The pine cone scales absorb the water and swell shut to keep the seeds in. When it’s dry, the scales are open, allowing for winds to pick up the winged pine seeds and carry them far away from other trees which are competitors for resources like light, water and nutrients. Another example of wind dispersal are dandelion seeds. For this experiment, you will need some pine cones, a lidded container large enough for the pine cones, cool water and a timer.
