@@angelinaboone103 in my experience with them, when fully ripened (which sadly Emmy’s store bought ones weren’t) they mostly have a sweet flavor upfront that’s not super identifiable but I would say is related to strawberries but the flavor punch comes at the end, almost once you’ve swallowed the berry. It’s a hybrid between two species of strawberry. In my book that makes it a strawberry. I don’t think it’s the same species involved as with the hybrid that’s the usual commercial strawberry, so one can argue that IT IS REALLY DIFFERENT but I’d say only a bit.
@joelroose2830
Жыл бұрын
Actually, it is the same species involved; they're Fragaria ×ananassa (F. virginiana × F. chiloensis), just like all the regular red supermarket strawberries. It's just that the white fruited varieties have not been grown commercially for such a long time that they are now being introduced as a novelty.

Emmy, pine berrys are strawberries. A cultivar is just a variety like sparkle berry,or honeyo.
@impastorr1354

True, but I think it's fine to distinguish the two. Cauliflower and cabbage are different varieties of the same species too, yet we wouldn't refer to cabbages as cauliflower or vice-versa.

Pineberry isn't even a specific variety, but is just used in marketing to refer to white cultivars of garden strawberry in general. The white cultivars supposedly have hints of pineapple in their flavour, so they were called pineapple strawberries = pineberries. So yes, they are exactly what they look like: white strawberries
@shawnsg

@@impastorr1354 distinguishing isn't the same as saying pineberries *aren't* strawberries. Pineberry is a marketing name from the early 2010's. I’ve been to a pineapple plantation in Costa Rica. This is what we learned: the leaves have nothing to do with ripeness. It doesn’t ripen off the plan. The sugars are fermenting. Cut and eat immediately. But any of them will be the same regardless of leaf appearance. You want to be able to hold it by a small bottom leaf. But otherwise it doesn’t make a difference!

The way I was taught to pick a pineapple - other than the obvious looking for bruising and making sure it’s “healthy” - was to try to pick it up by one of the inside leaves. If the leaf detaches instantly instead of lifting if a little, then it’s good and ripe and you should get it.

They are considered a strawberry cultivar (cultivated variety) and descendants of both strawberries native to North America (Fragaria virginiana) and strawberries native to Chile (Frageria chiloensis). They grow identical to all the other strawberries we grow. They have a very similar taste as a so-so strawberry but a hint of pineapple or guava. So far every year there are a few that taste very fruity but most are meerly good tasting but not awesome. That's nonsense, there are many different wild species of strawberries, and they are all legitimately strawberries (genus Fragaria).
