A friend successfully and radically drove his mothers massive 76 New Yorker at 12. I was 13 and knew better to get in, although I watched him and others drive off a few times while him mom was away. He was highly skilled on bikes, which apparently helped. You could barely see his head above the doorline. No cameras back then, when he tore up an already useless Catholic school football field that had no grass. It had been really wet at the time, and was basically like a demo derby lot with several inch deep mud. Being only 200 yards from his house, I did run up there and watch him go to town out there. One guy accidentally rolled into the power window switch and the back seat area was covered with mud, while they were doing donuts. 😆 He had to clean all that mess up. With security cams today, that would be insane to do right in a heavily populated area like we lived in. Back then, it was just far enough away that none of his neighbors could see him out there and tell his mom.

First of all, thank you officer for your service and for fighting crime. I have to disagree with one of the comments about your strict policy in chasing stolen vehicles and property, and that is when you stated that it was the responsibility of the owner of the property to lock their cars as if were they to lock it this wouldn't have happened. But the problem that I see with this point is, it puts the blame at the feet of the innocent victim and gives the criminals the idea that "Hey if they leave it open, it's ours for the taking." How about we tell the criminal element, " Hey, you want to attack my law-abiding citizens by trying to take what they worked hard and honestly for, you will suffer the consequences and if they catch you and you end up taking the pavement test, that's on you!
@alan30189

How about citizens, especially those who own Maserati’s, which are targets for theft, get a clue and take their keys with them and lock their stupid cars? How did somebody that’s that stupid, become so successful to be able to own a Maserati? I always take my keys out of my car and lock it. Here’s what Florida needs to do. They did pass a law that says, if you don’t take your keys out of your car and lock it when you’re away from it and it gets stolen by somebody that’s just looking for keys in a car to steal it, then YOU should get fined a minimum of $10,000. Stiffer fines should be imposed also, for car theft. I would suggest 10 years for the thieves who steal cars. Back in the old days, if you stole somebody’s horse, they would execute you. I’m not saying to go to that extreme, but we need much, much stiffer penalties for this, all around, for it to end.
@entropic9000

It's not that they're victim blaming, the victim isnt going to be punished for their crime. It's that it's not worth an innocent bystander (and yes even the criminals lawfully speaking though I dont always agree) getting hurt or killed because of something the owner themselves didn't see fit to, at minimum, lock up. People over property. It's not like they couldn't see them from above so they can take their time on item recovery. Someone walking across the street or someone doing the speed limit being put in danger or a house being crashed into is not worth a car. They're just saying people should be considered priceless. There used to be a lot more accidents because of the pursuit themselves and they've cut back on those incidents. I was taught that back in the academy and that was almost 13 years ago now. It's just not worth people, especially the innocent. Besides, you'd think seeing their idiotic death would deter other criminals but it doesn't seem to and pursuits never seemed to either. Just lowering casualties.

I am an America first constitutionalst ,but are sickened by the lack of respect for human life in these comments. I guess everyone here is perfect and never once let a friend talk you into doing something dumb. A child is dead and people make jokes about it, when you put value on one life , but not another you throw civilisation out the window. No matter how good of a parent you may think you are, young people sometimes act without thinking of the consequences. My heart breaks when I see fellow Americans making jokes that a car is worth more than a life.

I live in a middle class area. I have 5 CCTV cameras around my home and a ring bell cam because 1) I've been burgled twice and once they kicked my little dog in the head, 2) my son's car was stolen right out of our driveway, 3) my car received a bullet intended for the drug dealer across the street. We also have cameras in our vehicles, which saved my son when a truck backed into his week old Shelby in a parking lot. The man said my son rear ended him, but cam footage proved otherwise.

Just like locking your home up at night or when you leave your house. You are protecting your house from getting robbed. Do your part and take the appropriate measures to protect your things.
