Hello, great video! I am glad you tried a bromeliad fruit. There are only a few other edible member to this group with several berry forming species(ajo dulce being one that only grows on Juan De Fueca island off Chile being one worth a future trip for you lol), frutas do brasil list 5 or so that are listed as edible but that fiber glass taste sure varies a lot between species. Taro root, unripe monstera, arums, some minor fruits and sometimes pineapple have this affect where it feels like you have fiber glass shards in your mouth. I’ve been told it’s caused by oxalic acid crystals, but I could be mistaken. I tried a Bromelia pinguin that looked ripe at a botanical garden and it had a far higher amount of the fiberglass flavor than an underripe monstera or any other monocot I’ve tried, apart from a wild monstera relative that was awful. I think it’s possible that the fruit in your video has far lower amounts of this compound(likely equal to or less than pineapple depending on the effect you felt) and maybe doesn’t need as big of a warning. These plants can be variable in their affects, so I think you got lucky and found a superior clone. It’s really cool how you can tell it’s related to ginger, banana, dates, monstera, yucca and other monocots by extremely similar fruiting structure and parallel evolution. To me it looks like you have a winner there, especially since people commonly eat pineapples, and it sounds good, and it’s productive.

This affect is not due to bromiline which does break down your mouth but from oxalic acid crystals. Pandanus, Monstera, arums, unripe taro, and others all have this characteristic especially when unripe

Steven Murray I think the raphides in Aroid are calcium oxalate crystals. I learned about those the hard way when I was a kid and bit into a Jack-in-the-Pulpit corm after hearing that Native Americans used to eat them. They did...but only after cooking them in a pit for around 24 hours first. That caused immediate swelling where the juice touched my tongue. Didn’t realize that bromeliads could have them too. Do you think it’s possible this fruit was slightly unripe?

Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple and, given the name, I would imagine is also found in this fruit. It's typically used as a meat tenderizer and, in sufficient quantity, can break down the proteins in your mouth, which is why people sometimes get a sore mouth from pineapple.

it's weird, I'm very sensitive to citrus fruit because of dental problems (my entire mouth burns if I eat oranges/grapefruits, or tomatoes raw), but pineapple only gives me a normal tingling like most people, I would think I'd be sensitive to that too because my mouth is already vulnerable and it seemed so similar to citrus as a tropical fruit and is acidic, but pineapple doesn't give me issues. Luckily because it's one of my favorite fruits lol I can stop eating raw citrus and tomatoes but not pineapples.

@@BtsArmy-rk8vp Same here, but it's so delicious that it's worth it occasionally. Bromelain is broken down by cooking/canning, so it's only the raw fresh fruit that causes bleeding, but the fresh fruit is so much tastier. It especially makes the corners of my lips/mouth bleed and scab, so if I binge on a lot of pineapple, I end up with scabs/blisters that look kind of like herpes...

Hello. Great video. In the Yucatán, México, this is commonly known as 'piñuela', it is bromeliad. The actual plant looks like a pineapple plant across with an aloe vera but with longer pencas, with spikes. The fruits are in the middle, clusted together. The piñuelas are found seasonally at the markets during January to April, and they are typically sold cooked. To eat, just bite off one end and suck out the refreshing pulp. The cooked pulp can also be used to make refreshing águas frescas too. Stay safe.

Sean L. Medlar is a fruit to make jelly here in the UK, the kind of jelly that's a jam. It's actually called Medlar cheese believe it or not, because when it sets it's a very solid paste similar in texture to a good cheddar. You traditionally serve it with meat to cut through the richness and with cheeses. It's something much more rare to find in shops now but some people still make some every year. I'm thinking of making some to take for Christmas at my in laws. It's used in a similar way to Redcurrant jelly, Qunice jelly or cheese, Persimmon jelly, Rowan berry Jelly, Sea Buckthorn jelly, Bilberry jelly, Loquat jelly and Sloe jam Medlar trees spread across Western Europe from Iran and Turkey via Greece and then the Roman empire. It grows remarkably well here in the UK, even as far north as us here in Edinburgh. It's one of a small collection of fruits that must be 'bletted' before they can be eaten or processed into jams and jellies. That basically means the fruits need to stay on the bush or tree through the first frost and then start to rot on the plant before they are harvested. They're fruits are far too tough and acidic before going through that process.
