I get that we're all in the perspective of Steven so we see Pink quite negatively, but she was put in a position of the highest authority since emerging, she was treated like a lesser authority and had no control, but the decision she made to kill herself and save the earth is only a decision a good gem would have done. No one started the revolution to free gems but her, Steven just ended up finishing and solving what she couldn't. She hurt people, pink pearl, spinel, our pearl, etc and made terrible decisions that hurt so many people, but honestly? That's life. She wasn't perfect like the diamonds tried to make her. I personally love Pink Diamond's character, but not because she's a "good" or "bad" person. She's the only character where we actually get to see some contrast of her decisions and weigh them against her. The Crystal Gems as a whole are seen as good only because we've never seen them make any detrimental mistakes, and likewise, we only see Yellow, Blue, and White diamond as good NOW because they're willing to change. I figured that Pink Diamond understood that she herself was making so many mistakes and hurting so many people, that she needed to understand things from a different viewpoint in order to actually do some good. She came from a limited background where she was with others who saw destroying gems and planets as good, and was locked in her room with nothing to do or think of. When she finally started lashing out, it was the only positive reaction she'd ever had, so it would make sense that everything she would do thereafter was in a similar overcompensating way. Having the balance of Greg wasn't enough for her to fully understand, but by becoming a fusion with Steven, she was able to gain the human empathy and understanding of how to handle problems. I really don't think Steven was her running away or her letting him deal with her problems, but that he was the only solution she could see to fix everything, since she herself ruined everything

Yes. Pink Diamond was petulant, aggressive, and hurtful, but she also learned from her mistakes and made choices to not hurt people again. Well, not knowingly hurt them. She did grow and change; she did learn to do better. My opinion on Pink Diamond currently is that she is a morally gray character. She did horrible things, but horrible things were also done to her. She had good intentions but the wrong way off carrying them out. The other diamonds abused her. They treated her like a little child, but she also was like a child. She threw tantrums and broke things. But we see that she came to realize this and wanted to change. The thing is that she also did this wrong. Taking one trip to see Earth for herself spiralled into a gem shattering war. She kept so many secrets that built up and when they were all revealed, it resulted in so much emotional baggage for the Crystal Gems and Steven. She left gems so mentally broken that they came for her son's life. In conclusion, we shouldn't just look at her as a 1 dimensional character, but look at her from all perspectives.

@@michaelmurray8134 Its funny that you mention that. I've been saying forever that the people harping on her flaws are pulling a white diamond. Just because she was perceived as perfect; she wasn't. "Why don't you let yourself be, whoever you are." It took the gems and even the Diamonds forever to realize, that nothing is perfect. A Diamond is not perfect. None of them are, but that'd be boring if they were. I'm fascinated by Pink's mindset and development. She was supposed to be a diamond, incapable of change- popped out and that's all she is- but she grew. She did horrible things, but unlike the other diamonds, she tried to change by her own accord- not because someone told her to. I love that she is flawed and I want to understand her mind! I want to know who she is... probably like steven. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. I have a personal traumatic relationship with my own mother. Nothing she has done to me or the bad things she has done can be excused... but I understand some things now. She's human too, her actions only impact me as much as I let them. I see what brought her to where she is and what she is trying to overcome. She did good and bad things. I feel like I'll never be able to fully understand her if she doesn't understand herself, but trying to understand and figure out where to go from there is the big picture to me. "I don't need you to respect me; I respect me. I don't need you to love me; I love me. But I want you to know you could know me.... if you change your mind." Steven or anyone doesn't need to respect or love pink... but seeking to understand her... can still give some closure. Finding common ground to stand on is the best place to start moving forward.

YES! That is exactly what I was thinking! She was not perfect, but who is? I believe that Pink was like any other child, but like a child of Royalty. She knew she had a role to play, and was eager at first to live up to those expectations but in her own way, not like White Blue or Yellow Diamond. Sure there was a quota to making new colonies but she wanted to be personal with her court, not like royalty but like friends. Then she realized that all the things she had did were bad, to say the least that by the time she wanted to save the earth instead; she tried to rectify those mistakes, asking for the help of some of her court as Rose to rebel, be themselves, and tried to scare off Homeworld, rather than start a war. Things simply don't go that smoothly in real life, and the cartoon tried to stick to that as closely as possible. Creating scenario after scenario that doesn't go quite how you would expect. For Steven, Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, things spiral out of control all the time. That's just life. That was Pinks' life, now it's Stevens' turn. This is ultimately a coming of age story after all. No-one is perfect.

I think it's easier to understand Pink when you consider the podcast that revealed the diamond's embody the Id, Ego, and Superego. Specifically, that Pink was the Id. Of course, she would act out and throw tantrums to get her way in the beginning.

@@lilowhitney8614 I think so. I mean if you really want to go start digging. You could add some 'Carl Jung' into the mix and say Blue Diamond is an Introvert while Yellow is an Extrovert. If they both represent the ego, the part of the brain that mediates the desires of the Id with reality, you could argue they represent two different lines of rationale. While White is the superego. The part of the brain that deals with morality and societys rules, like White Diamond.

“pink diamond is the worst diamond ever!!” yellow - made forced gem shard fusions, took over possibly hundreds of planets and likely killed tons of other beings to do so, blue - emotionally abused pink, tried to shatter garnet, repeatedly called garnet “it” and generally hated fusions white - brainwashed pink pearl, the rest of the diamonds and the crystal gems, mistreated the other diamonds, straight up almost killed steven, and became insanely distant after pink died but we forgave them. they’re all flawed beings, but they were developed and we forgave them. rose twisted herself into a healer after being given destructive powers, started a revolution to free gems, and gave the crystal gems a home to finally be themselves. and she’s also flawed. she hurt her pearl, she tricked her sisters, she abandoned her friends and likely hurt many other gems but haven’t all the other diamonds hurt people too? rose did the best she could, the best she knew she could at least, and she tried so hard to make a change. she deserves a chance too.

Pink Diamond may deserve a chance, but she'll never get the chance to make amends for her bad choices, and yes you cannot deny that Pink Diamond made bad decisions. Also, while Blue Diamond may have emotionally abused Pink Diamond, Blue Diamond was also the only diamond to bend the rules for Pink Diamond. We've seen this in flashback memories, in Blue Diamond's own testimony, even in how Blue Diamond treated Steven during diamond days.

Yes, but some of these aren't as bad. I mean think of the Cluster as an real person not just a bunch of gems. And Yellow did try kill that person. Killing a person is better than leaving then trauma, and she did scarred many gems for their life. Like Spinel she never became her old goofy self again. Pink Pearl hid her traumatic feelings as we see her eye crack crack more in Volleyball. Pearl never told anyone her deepest secret. The crystal gems were like sisters. Actual sisters and imagine one one of them hiding something so bad that it would affect everyone. Yes, the diamonds did do bad things BUT they gave a chance and said "Ok I did many bad things! But I can stop that and instead help them." But Pink thought that maybe just maybe she could escape with Steven. But she never went back and try to FIX the wrongs she did. She could have taken Spinel when she "shattered Pink." Then she would at least have someone to tell her problems too. Blue makes everyone happy in her cotton candy clouds. Yellow fixed the gems and their psychical form. White is doing YOGA. She let's people in her mind instead of pushing them away. But what did Pink do? Leave a little fragile being with so many problems to solve. Do you all know how much TRAUMA effects someone? It really changes you. Like Steven changed from the First Episode: Happy Steven. He went to Steven Universe Future Steven.

Well yeah she did some awful things there’s not denying it. She came from a toxic family after all but she did become a better person she saw value in life on earth and in humans. She started a revelion to free gems and save all the life on earth. What other gem had done that? And even tho she loved them she probably saw spinel and pink pearl as objects just like the other diamonds, before realizing and learning that it was wrong. She should have handled bismuth differently but bismuth wanted to shatter/kill others and that’s totally the opposite from what she standed for. There was no way she could have fixed the corrupted gems by herself that’s why they were being bubbled until they could find a way to fix them. She fell in love with a human and was willing to give her whole being her whole life to have Steven which I think is the most selfless thing. In real life we tend to hurt people and sometimes is really hard to fix things especially if u don’t know what u did. (Diamonds were pretty ignorant about hurting others) but as we grow and become more knowledgeable and empathetic we stop hurting those who we love the most. Pink was not evil at all she was just naive and ignorant, she kept making mistakes but that’s life for many people. No one is perfect and the only thing we can do is improve which I think she did.

She is deeply flawed but endlessly fascinating. I will never shit on the twist of RQ=PD because that was honestly a fun rollercoaster and genius twist IMO. The way they slowly revealed Rose Quartz as this perfect messiah then the whole mystery of Pink Diamond her 'murder' only for the big reveal to be one giant lie upon lie upon lie -- it was some of the best fucking television I've ever seen. Given how flawed all the other characters were - this hype of Rose Quartz being a perfect-angel just didn't make any sense. I hope that the conclusion shows that she is just the most human of all gems. Everyone makes mistakes and does bad things sometimes. Sometimes we do bad things with good intentions. Sometimes we do bad things as a result of our own character flaws. You can't change the past, you can't fix the past, all you can do is move forward and try to make things right. Steven wants to fix everything, but that's something he can't do, because somethings can never be fixed. I don't think she was a good person, I don't think she was a bad person either. She's a flawed person who was put in a position that she could never handle, making decisions based on things she couldn't fully understand. Is that justifying her actions? No. But it shows that there's more to her mistakes than just her alone.
@lilowhitney8614
4 жыл бұрын
While I generally agree with you, I don't think think her faults can be dismissed by "we all make mistakes sometimes". Mistake implies an isolated occurance, while with Pink it's more that she started in a really shitty situation with shitty behaviour and struggled to learn how to act better. Something which she mostly succeeded in, just with some major gaps.
@TsubikiKoya
4 жыл бұрын
@@lilowhitney8614 I disagree. Mistakes can be a chain reaction of events. None of the things she did so far were really fueled by intent. Perhaps one of her character flaws is that she lacked empathy to be able to read the situation properly. But it's very obvious by both her thoughts and actions that she was actively trying to become a better person, and that really makes the difference. I don't believe in good or evil personally. Everyone is selfish at times, everyone does things they aren't proud of. That's mainly what I mean by "mistake". Mistakes are simply things you would wish to do differently given foresight. Mistakes are not little, mistakes don't suggest an "isolated occurance". Humans are constantly making mistakes all the time at the result of our flaws, regardless if you are a good or bad person. But we can see how when people are put on higher pedestals that their mistakes and character flaws have more impact on the world. If Pink was not in the position she was in, would she still be considered a bad person? I don't see how she is any worse than any other character on the show when we have seen almost all of the Crystal gems do objectively bad things. I personally don't believe in good or evil, so that's just me. I believe that the person a person is now could be completely different than who they were a minute ago. The only thing that makes us perceived as good or bad in the first place revolves around our mistakes and flaws and the impact they have. That is definitively fact. Pink Diamond is obviously not a bad person by nature, her actions made her that, but as we can see with literally all other characters in the show is that no matter how much mistakes you make you can always work to be a better person. The only reason we see Pink differently is because she is dead so therefore can't change. But I think the show is obviously going to clarify how we should feel in this situation.
@TsubikiKoya
4 жыл бұрын
And I heavily suspect that it's not going to end on "Pink Diamond is a terrible person" at the end. People are probably going to be pissed at that conclusion. I think part of the reason the fans are seeing her so critically right now is because that is obviously how Steven feels about her at the moment. Exactly, but for some reason the show treats Stevens obsessive desire to fix everything as good when it’s actual unhealthy to put in energy. The fact he managed to fix a thousands year old dictatorship is proof of this. It’s not a good message and certainly not a good ending. When I was watching the show I always expected Steven to accept that something’s can’t be fixed. But no it never came, instead all of his attempts were fixed and it took until the epilogue to show the negative effects of that. Honestly this show was great till season 5 but it failed so miserably and the fact that the fandom acts like nothing is wrong is so fucking infuriating for me.

Theory: Steven will get corrupted... during the corruption his physical form will become Wormy boi. His mind however will be inside his gem, where he will talk to Pink. They will argue and cry. Despite everyone fighting Wormy Boi, Steven only comes out of his corruption when he comes to terms with Pink. She became a better person, not perfect, she still dumped all her bs on Steven and everyone else instead of wrapping it up herself, but she was definitely better than when she started. I will say though, if you have to give up your identity and invent an entirely new one just to achieve some semblance of happiness, she must have been utterly miserable as a diamond.

She didn't mean to dump it all to Steven. She didn't even know that the Diamonds and Homeworld would be taking interest on planet earth again. I mean, it's been thousands of years since they had peace on Earth, except for the corrupted gems though. She didn't know there was a cluster inside the earth's core. She genuinely wanted for Steven to enjoy life as a human being, not to fix her problems. It's just, it all started when Steven freed Lapis on the mirror and when Lapis went back to Homeworld.

I think that Rose/Pink never really foresaw Homeworld coming to Earth again. I mean, the amount of abandoned planets the gems have, devoid of a single gem like Jungle Moon, is surely high. And she was always under the impression that the other Diamonds didn’t care about her, that even shattering Pink wouldn’t phase them. You can make a case that Rose realized her mistake at the corruption blast, but she probably didn’t even think that was from the Diamond’s grief. I mean, the Diamonds knew how much Pink wanted to leave Earth alone, she begged and begged. She may have seen the corruption blast as their ANGER towards her. That it was just their way of ridding the Earth, and they would move onto new conquests. I could see Rose taking that sort of mindset, especially with no one to talk to about it. So, if there were no threats, why would she saddle Steven and the gems with that extra baggage before her death? She wanted Steven to be human, not a gem. And knowing that he’s a Diamond? It radically changed the way he lives now. He’s more gem than ever before, taking up duties and responsibilities that Pink/Rose always hated. From her perspective, if you told her that Steven would be recognized as Pink Diamond, and ruling parts of Homeworld and gemkind? She would be horrified. She wanted nothing more than Steven to be human. The fate Steven carved for himself is something Rose/Pink DIDNT want for him. She wanted him to be free, and he can’t be free knowing his mother’s true past.

The problem I have with Rebecca Sugar's statement of Rose Quartz being a horrible person is the fact that that's a very unbalanced view of a person that the show has never taken before with any other character. The other diamonds have done so much worse but yet nobody seems to care bc they are still alive and can still change. Yes, Pink/Rose had her awful moments; however, she was taught since birth that what she was doing was “normal” and I believe she had trouble trying to change herself since she couldn’t really talk to the Crystal gems about her true past and how she could change. As soon as the Diamonds saw Spinel, they could tell she belonged to Pink. Also, Spinel wasn’t that strong of a character. If Spinel has joined the rebellion, she could have been shattered. In all honesty? Pink Diamond is the biggest tragedy I’ve seen in fiction. She’s so complex - she was flawed, but not evil; she did good things, but didn’t always think it through and ended up hurting others. She’s fascinating because she’s one of the most realistic characters in the show. I think it’s unfair to call her evil and unfair to call her a saint. The show has shown over and over that’s she’s a morally complex person who made bad decisions. And, tbh, a lot of those bad decisions stemmed from the fact that she “grew up” in an abusive environment with dictators that have the emotional maturity of a 5 year old. I think the end of her life was because she got to a point where she cultivated enough compassion and understanding that she was overrriden with guilt. She wanted to leave the past behind so badly (which is what Steven keeps doing) and like what I’ve seen my friends do when they got suicidal, she reasoned that everyone would be better off if she just disappeared, as if the consequences of her mistakes would go away if she did. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that, and no one around her was able to explain that to her and talk her out of it because she kept so many things secret. Even if it dawned upon her, once she was pregnant with Steven it’d be too late - coming from that state of mind, there’s no way she’d be able to handle aborting Steven/Nora without adding even more guilt to her conscious. She did a lot of horrible things and that should be acknowledged, but it doesn’t make her irredeemable and we should also acknowledge what led to her doing those horrible things. Growing up in an abusive household can really fuck you up, and she was never really given the right people, tools, support, and environment to fully grow past it. Not that being abused means you’re always going to make mistakes, it just means it’s gonna make handling life harder. She’s a victim, but she also hurt others. She’s not evil, but she’s not perfect either.

Rose helped me to love the little things in life. I'll never forget that. Even with all these horrible things she did in the past, she clearly tried to change after she hurt Volleyball. As Paarthurnax from Skyrim eloquently put it: “What is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" Rose was trying hard to change who she was and make up for all the mistakes she kept making.

It's heavily implied that Yellow either has personally shattered a multitude of gems, or at least had those gems shattered on her orders. Also, she was happy to order the destruction of many organic beings. Although we know less about Blue, other than her mourning, she is also implied to have ordered the destruction of organic life, at least on her colonies. As far as White is concerned, whether she covered for some of Pink's tantrums or not, she was shown to definitely not care for any other life beneath her. Even now, she still lapses and considers at least non-gems to be lower lifeforms. We've also seen that White does not stand for anyone questioning her authority. Of course, all of the Diamonds have also used their individual powers to control, threaten, hurt, or do worse to any gem who stepped out of line, and they were perfectly happy to destroy all gems who were left on the Earth as a final attack against the rebellion. Yes, that attack only resulted in mass corruption, but they had a firm belief that they had destroyed any gem left on Earth. I'm not excusing nor ignoring the fact that young Pink Diamond was petulant, aggressive, hurtful, and manipulative, whether she was really aware of these problems or not. What I am saying is that it seems difficult to reconcile a hatred for Pink Diamond, while not hating the other Diamonds as much or more; especially considering the fact that Pink had, from a very early point, chosen to set aside her function as a Diamond and instead try to protect the Earth and its natural inhabitants. During the entire period that Pink Diamond was disguised as Rose Quartz, six thousand years or otherwise, she was learning, maturing, and trying to be a better person. The other diamonds were, as far as we can tell, becoming more entrenched in their own toxic and destructive behaviors. I still don't understand why people would hate Pink Diamond. She was actively trying to be a good person and stop herself from hurting others. The other Diamonds? Not so much. Think of Pink Diamond like Lars: an immature jerk trying to impress others in all the wrong ways, yelling at and cajoling superiors, failing at many necessary tasks, but then choosing to do the right thing when given a second chance. The fact that Lars matured and changed does not automatically absolve his many misdeeds, but the audience tends to like him, because they all saw him do better. But with Pink Diamond, the audience was led to see her as a person who lied. Should Pink Diamond's troubling past automatically nullify the good which she did as Rose Quartz? No. Her good deeds shouldn't automatically absolve her petulant past, but neither should her past nullify the good she did. I also think that the audience should not be so willing to forgive the other Diamonds or villains after a simple song and dance routine with them. It's a lot more complicated than just "White is an overbearing mom, Yellow and Blue are overbearing aunts, and Pink was an ungrateful whiny brat."

Pink is my favorite character, because she reminds me so much of myself. I have PTSD from the (almost) same type of abuse the other Diamonds did to her. PTSD causes people to act in violent and strange ways. She gave up her life because she thought she was useless and only a different person could save anybody. Her problem was that she didn’t think people cared about her and she was so terrified that none of her friends would ever truly love her. I’ve said hateful things and acted in extreme ways, even considered suicide, because I thought no one cared. I’m realizing that if I did commit suicide, I would’ve left behind a mess similar to Pink. Maybe people criticizing her makes me think twice about suicide-that people do care and doing it will cause me to be a bad person to others. Either way I think Pink represents PTSD and shouldn’t be considered worse than any of her family, who were the ones who regularly abused her for being “defective.” (Also similar time my story, since I was born with an illness that cost my family tons of money.) Though I get that people relate to different characters, I don’t think it makes sense to hate Pink. Spinel’s story was hard for me since I assumed the constant poking from Spinel triggered Pink’s PTSD about White always watching her. I mean, Spinel’s power is that you can’t get away from her. For someone wanting to escape Homeworld, Spinel probably triggered severe fear in her. After the warp was broken, she couldn’t go to back to grab Spinel or tell her to stop waiting. I hope I don’t get hated on for saying I relate to Pink. It actually hurts a little when people hate her since o relate so much to her story. The family dynamic is almost exactly like mine.

You can say almost anything about her and I'll understand where you are coming from. But any time someone says she left things for Steven to solve I get *PISSED* . I keep it iron clad - Rose did not INTEND for Steven to solve anything. In my view the video she left for Steven is a video of her trying to tell him that she had a child for love, NOT for a problem solver. While I see this as a poor decision considering all of the loose threads that she left (which were a ton), I see this more as a naive, ignorant and foresight lacking decision. Much like starting the war to save humans and give gems more freedom while refusing to shatter her enemies - good intentions, terrible plan; and like pretending to shatter herself to make the diamonds think Earth was not worth the trouble of conquering/destroying - good intentions, awful plan. Besides, this is Steven Universe, not Always Sunny in Philadelphia. You can't tell me with a straight face that a character from this show had the reasoning of "Oh, I have so many problems, and I have no idea how to solve them. Wait! I know! I will have a son and die! Then HE will have to solve my problems, not me!"

I personally love Pink Diamond. Even to this day, I can’t fully comprehend why she’s painted as such a bad character because I personally cannot. She was just trying to do the best she could under the circumstances she was forced into and growing up, or living, in the environment she was in, she did a pretty good job of choosing the best options. Gems were only made for one thing when Pink was in power, so seeing a diamond do what she wasn’t meant to is a giant break from character and, in my opinion, such a great addition to who she is/was. By hiding away her real identity of Pink Diamond, she was trying to lock away her past and the horrible things she did, therefore acknowledging that she did make some bad decisions and showing growth. Just my opinion.

Thing is, I wasn't surprised to find out that she, at one point, had 'destructive' tantrums. All the Diamonds have shown that they can be immature (Yellow attacking before thinking, Blue focusing on the past while ignoring her present, White forcing her beliefs on others, ect.), but the only reason we're acting so shocked about Pink's actions is because of how tied up she is with our main character Steven -- if she was separate from him in the same way the other diamonds are, then her actions (past and prior to giving birth to Steven) wouldn't have caused so much division.

There's one thing I haven't seen a whole lot of mentioned. The real world parallel of this sort of situation. (Hold your horses, lemme explain) Imagine growing up you never got to know your mom because she died during childbirth, but everyone around you loved her so much and were constantly praising her and telling you stories of how amazing she was. You'd grow up thinking your mom was just like they said, just like Steven did. But getting older means taking off the rose tinted glasses (pun not intended) and finally coming to grips with maybe things weren't as good as they seemed when you were little. Maybe your mom WASN'T the amazing person your dad and her friends thought she was. And that's gotta be incredibly hard to really digest as a kid, especially a teenager. So I feel awful for Steven in these moments. Cause it's obviously so stressful. Not only is he having to deal with all his mother's past problems, but just the sole factor of having to accept that your mom- a person children are taught to love and respect without falter while growing up- may not deserve all that respect. The question I have though is; does that mean Rose/Pink isn't deserving of her friends and family's love? You can love someone unconditionally, while also understanding that they did bad things and forgiving them for it. Just look at Greg. Even after finding out everything Rose did, he still loves her. So I'd like to hope by the end of this Steven can finally make that same peace with himself. Yes, his mother did TERRIBLE things while she was alive, and her reasons for doing so don't excuse her, but she's also still his mom at the end of it all. No, she isn't this perfect being that the CGs made her out to be. She's a flawed person with a complex story. But hopefully he can still find love in his heart for her by the end of it. Cause sweeping her memory away under the rug won't do anyone any favors.

I am so glad this video exists. While I will never say Rose/Pink was a Saint, or always good, I do believe she was more naive and dismissive than bad or evil. She did horrible things but not because she wanted to hurt people but because she either failed to consider how they would feel or didn't realize how much it would affect them, or she was being irresponsible, not realizing how much power she had over others or maybe not caring. She didn't consider Spinel's feelings, she just knew she wanted to be rid of her I believe she somehow thought the Crystal Gems would be okay without her- she just was too in her own head to realize how much losing her would hurt them. Either that or she started to realize how much she had hurt them and thought they would be better without her? I'm not sure on that one When she hurt her pearl it wasn't a vicious attack, it was an irresponsible outburst. They says with great power comes great responsibility, which she seemed to have little to none of. She honestly seemed to believe Yellow and Blue didn't love her, so her death wouldn't matter to them. She thought they would abandon Earth when Pink was gone, not lash out in pain None of this makes anything she did right or even okay, but I really don't think she is as bad as a lot of people are making her out to be. She made a ton of mistakes that she knew she couldn't fix. I think she might have thought that she couldn't change enough to fix them- but maybe her human son could (of course not considering how much of a burden that was putting on an innocent child, cause, you know, she didn't even consider his feelings)

I honestly feel like much of the shit she did was not so much a result of malicious intent as it was a result of extreme short-sightedness. Particularly the whole dumping her issues on Steven thing. I legitimately do think that the idea that Homeworld Gems would at some point come back to Earth simply didn't occur to her. After all, back in the episode Peridot was first introduced, none of the Crystal Gems were willing to accept the possibility that there was someone else using the warp pads on Earth besides them. I don't think they would have been nearly so skeptical if they thought there was a possibility that the Homeworld Gems would make their way back. And while one might argue that Rose/Pink could have possibly been aware of the possibility and just not said anything, I would argue that first of all, Rose obviously cared about the Earth and its people( even if she didn't truly understand what was so valuable about them until she got with Greg), and wouldn't ignore any threats to the planet she fought so hard to protect, like the kind that Homeworld has posed to Earth for much of the series, and second, if the possibility occurred to her, then surely it would have occurred to the others, at the very least either Pearl, or better yet Garnet (who, if she'd known to look out for the possibility of having to fight Homeworld once again using her future vision, would have seen it coming), and surely one of them would have either brought it up with Rose herself, or simply have been on guard in case such an outcome occurred. I think the Crystal Gems, and Rose in particular, might have had concerns in the beginning about Homeworld coming back, the fact is that several thousand years, while it might not be nearly so big a deal for a Gem who's been around for millennia, especially a Diamond, likely was still enough time for them to get comfortable on Earth and for them to grow to really believe that Homeworld simply wasn't going to bother the Earth anytime soon, if ever again. No, I don't think she meant to dump all her problems on Steven. I don't think she intended to have Steven for the sole purpose of escaping her problems once and for all. I believe she had Steven simply because she wanted to create new life, something that she was fascinated with, especially when she first visited Earth, but as a Gem never really had the opportunity to, at least not until she met Greg, and fell in love with him, and gained a better understanding of humanity than she ever had. She even knowingly, and WILLINGLY, gave her own existence in order to do so, because, despite not knowing who he'd turn out to be or even that he was, you know, a he, she clearly thought that Steven was worth bringing into the world, even if that meant giving up herself to become a part of him. Her problem was that she didn't concern herself with Steven's future, likely believing that her awful past was entirely behind her, and that it wouldn't come back to haunt her, let alone Steven. Which it did,a mere 14 years after she gave birth to Steven, in fact. (Of course, this is simply my opinion on the matter. I could be wrong, and it could turn out that she really was that awful, rather than simply not mindful of the often terrible consequences of her actions at times. I don't think that's the case at all, but that's just my opinion)

I could be wrong on this, and this is kind of a weird headcannon of mine that deeper cut gems are likely to have a mental illness(es) because they are considered defective according to the old diamond standards. So I guess you could say Pink Diamond was autistic? IDK she just always seemed to have a very wonderful fantasy-like vibe to her, and she was also just impulsive and literally not sure how to deal with her problems at all. I can understand how hard it can be, not sure how to take leadership, having low condfidence, having anger outbursts, it ALL seems to fit within the realm of aspergers/autism to me. Also we see how Amethyst is too, very childish/ animal-like at first, but she IS able to assume responsibility as she does mature. Executive function can also be altered by ADHD, which is the ability to sort and execute certain tasks. Pink Diamond just had WAY too much on her plate, even if she thought she could handle the responsibility. I also believe that she did fall in love, with both Pearl AND Greg, and possibly is polyamorous.

I don't know. I'm autistic and I really don't like being compared to her personally. I have anger outbursts, but those never involve breaking anything (like the glass she broke) or hurting anyone. I think if any gem is autistic coded it's probably peridot (especially where she's trying everything to get lapis to like her and she doesn't understand what she's doing wrong, which is a big mood, and so is the getting obsessive over shows, and then having words you repeat like how she says clod all the time). But I think it just makes me deeply uncomfortable to have a part of myself that defines who I am being likened to someone who hurt people like that. I'm high empathy. If I hurt anyone, it's myself. I'd never hurt another person unless they really deserve it (if they're attacking my friends or my family). I don't relate to her at all. I relate to Peridot and Pearl and Amethyst (for different reasons) but Pink Diamond or Rose even before any of the oof stuff came out was never a character that I identified with at all. I never liked her. I don't hate her necessarily, but I definitely don't like her (not the same as disliking. If the scale is Hate Dislike Neutral Like Love I'm probably between dislike and neutral). I don't know. I don't like the idea that she might have autistic traits because that seems to be perpetuating negative stereotypes about autism. I think it's a lot more realistic to liken her to a child rather than an autistic person. (Also just for the record Asperger's isn't a diagnosis anymore. It's just Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD because they realised that autism is actually a lot more complex )
@justapersonexistinghere2507

But also autism is so varied that my experiences can be nothing like someone else's. It's a really varied thing but it does make me uncomfortable having something I'm proud of and something that defines me and is a major part of my identity being given to someone like that. It's like when it's given to someone like Newt Scamander or The Good Doctor I go "ok. This makes sense. This is fine. And good. And I relate" But it feels real bad thinking that something that defines me is being used to define a character that I think did some really bad shit that I nor any of the other autistic people I know would. We didn't throw tantrums. We didn't lash out at others. And PD threw balls and didn't like all the rules and regulations of homeworld. I can't even break a stupid rule or break a rule for a few seconds without freaking out. Plus autistic people tend to dislike change and like.... Her entire existence was change that would make me so anxiety
@ankaplanka

Many people throw tantrums. But we with autism have meltdowns instead, due to being overwhelmed by either peoples' actions, the environment or something else that bothers us. I can't see Pink/Rose as autistic, many of us are bad liars because we hate to lie. Instead we are telling the truth, because that's what happened. Why romanticise the situation when it can hurt someone later on? We just need to be told what to do so we can worry less. Peridot is the character I can see as autistic though. Like her arc, many can see us with autism as a threat because they can't understand us and our actions, or lack of actions (since many of us are rather passive). But once we have warmed up to someone and gotten used to a new environment, many of us are just more or less dorky nerds who just want to be happy and enjoy life with people they love.

I’ve never hated PD/RQ, I understand she did some really bad things, and I can’t stress how bad those things are. Abandonment, the secrets, the lies. All of it can be viewed as bad, but just because she did bad things, doesn’t mean she is a bad person. You can make wrong choices, that you thought were right in the moment, and still be a good person. Nobody can say they didn’t do something bad for the right reason, but that in no way makes you a horrible person. I’ve always been of the belief of second chances, and while I know PD won’t come back into play for her second chance, I can respect that she tried. Even if her attempts weren’t the best options for things. I’ve never defended her, but I’ve never put her down. She as a character is amazing because she’s so completely complex, and honestly I don’t think there is a right answer on how to feel about her, because everyone’s opinions will be based on their life experiences and how her actions made them feel. 0:42 THANK YOU. I left the SU community because I got tired of seeing "Rose was a bitch" memes everywhere. It also ruined my enjoyment of the movie and epilogue because it feels like the writers want to constantly dunk on Rose too. Rose was the embodiment of change. She had the most character growth of anyone on the show (experienced in reverse), and ended up being the most human character by far. My favorite episode will always be The Answer. While Blue wanted to shatter Garnet for fusing, Rose was nothing but 100% supportive of Ruby and Sapphire's relationship.

This reminds me about the current notions in our society, specifically in social media where everyone treats something as "You can never run from your past ever and you can never change!! >;(((" I get strong vibes of the times when people started calling Rebecca Sugar out on previous "art" she has made in the past (You know the ones) and kept bashing on her not because she is doing it now, but DID it in the past, completely ignoring the current moment in time. (This situation also happened to Vivziepop as well as other people who strike it big in the animation department) Isn't the main power that Steven had ever since his creation was the ability to change? I think this was directly inherited from pink at the end of her character arc. Sure, she did horrible things throughout her life and at the end she couldn't see any escape from the problems she made, but she made the active changes to herself to prevent more issues from arising but nonetheless other issues were being created. I'm positive that she thought long and hard throughout the thousands of years she was alive about how to solve the issues she started, and ultimately decided that more problems would just keep getting made if she stayed active, and made the ultimate sacrifice of giving up her own form for Steven. Granted this does go both ways depending on your perspective on it, on one side she is making the ultimate good by sacrificing herself, and on the other she gets scott free by ending her life and dumping it all on Steven for him to deal with. But sometimes life problems are out of individual control and cannot be solved, and not everything is a win-win situation. if this weren't true then I guarantee nobody in history would willingly have commited suicide. (sorry if that got heavy, i'm a passionate speaker ^^') In the end this is how I interpret her as a character, I expect there to be controversy upon me posting this and that's out of my hand, apologies.

It seems like the writers are using PD/Rose as a scapegoat for all the bad things that happened in the series. When their intent is to make a character that isn't good nor evil, they sure do pile more evil than good to her character. And the evil seems to outweigh the good as well, making it so easy for people to yell: "Pink Diamond is the true villain of Steven Universe!" when the series had shown otherwise. Not only that, but the SU fandom is notorious for fully demonizing certain characters for their behavior and not others who have done equally or worse things. Remember the Diamonds being literal dictators who shattered, colonized planets and eventually killing the life there unmercifully? Or the abuse they've done onto Pink and presumably other gems as well? What about Lapis Lazuli and her mistreatment of Peridot and Jasper? What about Jasper in general? Spinel? These things that are extremely important to their character, yet is ignored for the most part. I'm by no means trying to shift the blame or justifying Pink's actions at all, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy the SU fandom has when it comes to analyzing characters. Majority of critics like myself who are on PD/Rose's defense and offering more analysis on her character are doing this because everyone always takes things on surface value without anymore thought to it. Like you said OP, we have to be more open minded as the series concludes. Personally, I love PD because to me, she has the most human like qualities than anyone on the show. She reminds me of myself and her mistakes can be seen in other people too. We've all lied before, left a old friend behind, hurt someone on accident and even lead others on for one reason or another. Little things like that, but hey, that's just a theory, a really long detailed film theeeoryyyyyy.

I think you need to look at Steven in s.u. future more, if you've noticed, Steven is starting to display characteristics similar to what Volleyball described as Pink's earlier years before current Pearl. Whether this is because he's in puberty now and more susceptible to enotional outburts is unknown, but i think that was the case and i think it was the same for Pink as she eventually stopped having tantrums, resulting in our Pearl's view of Rose. Calm, keeping secrets and only healing and defending. In fact, in the episode Volleyball, the same thing could've happened to our Pearl if she'd been close enough when Steven lost control and smashed everything around him in the reef. If you, or anyone, are going to argue that Pink was unredeemable because she accidentally hurt Volleyball that time, then so is Steven because he just got lucky he wasn't close to Pearl. Not to mention he *has* already angrily attacked a gem with that new destructive power, Jasper. She wanted him to, dragged it out even, but he still attacked her out of anger and was only even okay because she's powerful. Was she awful as R.S. said? Yes, in the way a violently emotional teen is awful. People make excuses for teens, but there is still an acknowledged scale of behavior when looking at children/teens. For clarity, i know she said "Rose" was kind of an awful person, but what the P.D. haters need to understand is that Rose wasn't *immediately* a good person when she changed into Rose, she changed to Rose to escape her gilded cage in homeworld *followed by* her interactions on earth leading to the truly good Rose. She grew even after becoming Rose, she'd just ALSO grown before from losing control of her emotions and destroying things to being more level headed. Before or around when she became Rose, when Volleyball was her Pearl. Even as far as when she met Greg she wasn't fully the Rose she passed as, her interactions and relationship with Greg were the last piece that gave her a love for humans as individual people, not just as parts of nature as she'd been viewing them as when she first discovered that there was life on Earth. She initially kept them as pets and you can see in her earlier interactions with Greg when she calls humans entertaining and says she "loves humans", it's similar to how you'd look and talk about dogs. She wasn't fully grown till she met Greg. I guess my point is that the R.S. quotes you've given don't debunk the "Pink ended up good" side of the argument when you consider the timeline of Pink's growth.
@draconis17

When you mentioned that Amethyst emerged after the war, that reminded me of a question I had- *did* Amethyst emerge after the war was over? Let me explain. We know that: 1. Garnet was first formed 5750 years ago 2. The Rose Quartz persona was already established and already a known rebel by then 3. The Rose Quartz persona was first created when the Famethysts emerged 4. Amethyst emerged 500 years after the Famethysts Doesn't that mean that Amethyst is a MINIMUM of 5250 years old? And we know that the war was still in full swing 5300 years ago because that's when Bismuth was bubbled, so it seems really unlikely that the "shattering" of PD and the corruption wave happened that quickly afterwards. Do you think this is a plot hole or am I forgetting something important, or what?

I think what people were having trouble with is at first she seemed to be the picture perfect person, everything that everyone ever wanted in a leader and a "good person", so When it's showing that Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz showed to be.... Well.... more human, and more complex as a person, the legend and the "perfect good" shattered with that reveal. No one is perfect. Not even Legends. In a way Pink Diamond (and the gem race in general) reminds me of how the Fae are in the Celtic mythology. They are whimsical and temperamental, contradicting, "logical thinking", about perfection and keeping things the same and in a way selfish as well. They don't have the same "human emotions" as we do. So the more she learned how Humans ACTUALLY are when she's with Greg... that's when she started to learn that humans are more complex than "Frolicking among the trees". It's hard to teach fae human emotions because they don't experience those very same emotions. That's why gems have a hard time in DEALING with emotions when they hit.... and they hit hard... and they lash out in the worst way possible. And Pink Diamond was no acceptation to this rule of learning the hard way.
@ListlessLion
4 жыл бұрын
The new info actually put a lot of things into perspective for me. She bottled her emotions and started lying to attempt to keep from hurting people. However, my big takeaway was that White Diamond pausing her pearl after the injury, denying them both closure and the ability for her to fix her mistake, is the source of her avoidant issues with everyone else. I think she never learned how closure works and her strategy in life was to avoid hurting people, then lie and/or avoid them if that doesn't work, then maintain the lie so people aren't hurt by discovering they were lied to.

You know the lyrics to love like you makes more sense “I always thought I might be bad, now I’m sure that it’s true” “I wish that I knew what made you think I’m so special”

It’s really scary how casually people throw around the word “abuse”. By textbook definition, abuse is when one treats (a person or an animal) with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly. Yes Pink Diamond hurt Pink Pearl but she said it was an accident because of Pink’s explosive temper. I’m sure if it was something that was a continuous thing we would see way more battle scars for 1. The other option is that Pink literally sat there and beat the shit out of Pink Pearl in this one instance. In that case, we can also call that abuse. But that is not what happened; there are many people who have hurt someone they’ve cared about by accident in a fit of anger. Using this logic and applying it to irl, I guess I’ve been abused? I was a young and defenseless little child and my sister was a stupid and emotional teenager. I pissed her off and guess what? She hit me. Not with her hands, no, but with an object. I still have the scar to this day on my face to prove it. However, does that mean she abused me? No I wouldn’t say so. Did she hurt me. Hell yeah. Do I flinch a little when people raise their hand to me? Of course. But she immediately apologized once she saw the damage and the blood running down my face and claimed she ‘didn’t mean to’, that she was ‘sorry’. She took me away and tried to clean up the mess of blood and tears because she didn’t want this to happen- she didn’t MEAN for this to happen. I’m ngl, I’ve also done my fair share of hurting people in my fit of anger when I was younger. But was it intentionally? Hell no! But does that mean it doesn’t have its effects? No. So just, stop throwing the word abuse around??? It’s okay to say hit, hurt and pain? Those things can have negative consequences on the person too-maybe not PTSD trauma level but it’s still something.

Roundtable please do a theory on "Shy Rose Quartz" because I feel she is more important than what alot of people might think, and has personal history with rose quartz. she promised she wouldn't talk about being bubbled, and Pink Diamond copied her entire look, outfit, hair and all.. that's way to coinsidental , not to mention the fact no one is questioning if they knew Pink Diamond was Rose Quartz or if they all thought one of their own rebelled while one earth? & Where is the rest of Pink Diamonds gems such as Morganite??

Pearl was the one that created PDs gemsona. I bet if Pearl created the hippie RQ or the Superfan RQ gemsona PD could have chosen which ever one Pearl made.

Pink Diamond; A fascinating character. I can't wait to find out more, and her design is super cute.

As much as I'd like to give hate to Pink Diamond, I must always remember that through all the things she learned with Greg and the Crystal Gems, she became more genuine person; one who believed in her loved ones, family and good friends. Someone who gave up their corporeal form in order to give life and through that sacrifice wanted the best for them and the future.

I love how everyone is so critical of Pink yet turn a blind eye to the other diamonds. They are literal space nazis. None of them are good, even of they are 'trying'
