My favourite Floyd song, devoted to their former band mate Syd Barrett who left in 1968. this album was recorded in 1975 and - amazingly -Syd actually turned up unexpectedly at the studio while they were recording an album partly about him!. No-one had seen him in 7 years and so they initially didn't recognise him.

“Being in a fishbowl” also means exposed, because the bowl is made of glass. It’s also a form of a cage. They were living their lives in a fishbowl because of their fame and celebrity. Floyd sings allot about celebrity and how exposed you become. They are very private people and that kind of exposure was very difficult. Also, they often speak of cages or being caught up in the “machinery” of the music industry or government. Because of the time this came out..1975...when they speak of a “walk-on part in a war for a lead role in a cage”, I always took it as a reference to Vietnam....I could be wrong, but that was a subject that overshadowed everything back then and any reference to war was seen through that lens. But it could also mean that you sold-out to the establishment....You traded a small part in the “Revolution” for a lead role in the Establishment. That interpretation would have made total sense in that time period. .

“walk-on part in a war for a lead role in a cage”... Roger recently explained that line at a Julian Assange protest gig he turned up at. Its not about Vietnam, but refers to anyone who doesn't take the chance to protest at something - the 'war' - but if you fail to do anything, you will end up with the 'lead role in a cage'.

You "Bro"s are genuine and your responses real. Excellent!. You are just scratching the surface of what we call the best music ever performed on this planet......70's Music. Well, most of it. Competition and competency spearheaded quality music. But there was collateral damage with great songs but they were many "one hit" wonders. What remained and endured over time were great bands with a dearth of music we can replay over and over in the absence of good music we see today. Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, The Eagles, Rush, Doobie Brothers, Jeff Beck, The Doors, Procol Harum, Traffic, Aerosmith.....and the list goes on.

A walk on part in a war for a lead roll in a cage is referring to the people who refused to fight in the Vietnam war and were sent to prison.
@znk0r

You sure about that? Cause Roger Waters says it's about people who are content as the top dog in something meaningless as opposed to playing a small part in something worthwhile. Hence the use of theater references "walk on part" and "lead role". They aren't using the word war literally but rather a collective effort.
@thondomain

It has no reference to Vietnam. It means to speak up for what's right despite consequence, rather than spend your whole life looking the other way. Gilmore elaborated on that theme years later with the song "On the Turning Away".

Syd Barrett had long been gone from Floyd by this time and everyone moved on, except that out of the clear blue Syd showed up to this recording session, and was present during recording but he was so unrecognizable that at first know one knew who he was. Before you know it, he vanished and that was the last time they ever saw him again. Look it up for more detail..

Tho this song was written because of syd barrett, i think we all can relate. Can you tell between whats real and whats not? What is true? Do you still remember what you believed in? Your values? Or did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? It feels like he is trying to hold on to all the good in the world. Trying to bring his friend back. "Did you exchange a walk on part in the war, for a lead role in a cage" Like selling out. Giving up your convictions for something. Like being the big fish in the pond.

I've always interpreted " a walk-on part in the war" as someone who survived or even someone that never saw combat and was technically involved in military service-- yet didn't make the ultimate sacrifice - so they came back into society-- to the dregs of the everyday work world...office cubicles, etc.....that some consider....."a cage". Or coming back home to normal struggles in real life after being in life and death situations where everyone eventually is has at least a walk-on part. Knowing RW experience of losing a father, the lyrics probably go deeper than I've imagined...

Great reaction, as always! You should do a Pink Floyd album reaction. Pink Floyd were an album band. Their music is meant to be listened to an entire album at a time. Their songs flow into each other and each album tends to have a common theme, or tells a story. I'd recommend doing it offline. Phone off. No distractions. No pauses. No talking. Just listening, from beginning to end. I'd love to see you do an album reaction online but I think you'd get more out of it offline. You can always report back to us afterwards. Rodger Waters was quite obsessive about WW2, I think he lost some one, not sure. I think what he was referring to in the line, “did you exchange a walk on part in the war, for a lead role in a cage”, was, that men were conscripted to enlist in the forces, and were jailed as conscientious objectors if he refused.
