Biggest problem with any aluminum pan is they do not hold heat well. This can be a problem in colder weather. A steel pan, or aluminum with extra thick bottom, simply cook better. but they're heavier. Have to decide on a priority and go with that. I tend to use the same pan I use in my home kitchen and just deal with the additional weight.

Excellent review, just what I was looking for. I have now purchased the 8” for backpacking and 10” for car camping due to the fantastic results I was getting from the 8” glad you made the review Thank you

For 1-2 persons, backpacking, what would you recommend? Something light and compact. These look a bit too large and heavy for that purpose, although they may work just fine for regular camping.

Great video, thanks for the information! Quick question? Do you prefer the 8" or 10" fry pan for day hiking/backpacking and camping... cooking for 1 & 2 people. Please explain the reason if you would. Thanks very much.
@wobblyotteroutdoors

I'd prefer the 8" for backpacking and for one person, because it is smaller. The 8" could probably work for 2 people too. We use the 10" pan when we go camping because size and weight are not an issue.

They are great fry pans and cook fairly even . I have been using both for years . The rest of my cooking pans are Stanley. I just bought the base camp set , so will be trying out the double walled Stanley fry pan soon .

in your online review you say the pinnacle is approved for camp fires. Can you tell me where you saw this approval? On Amazon listing it says not to use on open flames or camp fires, and I'm hearing people say the label says the same. Do you have a link to where this approval is? Also, are you still using this in campfires, and how's i holding up? Thanks for the review.

Hi @1K CB. Thank you for watching the review and for your comments and questions. I will attempt to address them. [I put the current GSI Outdoors statement, that's the topic of this discussion, at the bottom of this reply.] Our review video was made 3 years ago and I don't have the packaging that came with the pans at that time. I don't know if I mis-spoke, or if the GSI statements were different at that time. When using any pan you don't want to use it too high of heat, regardless of the heat source. That could warp or destroy the pan. And with the rubbery parts of the handles of these pans, I'd never put the handle directly over any heat source. We most often use the Pinnacle pan over a camp stove with either isobutane fuel or propane fuel. I have used the Pinnacle and the Bugaboo pans over charcoal fires, gas camp stoves, and in the home on an electric stove. I believe I have used it over a small wood fire in a camp stove like the Firebox Nano. I can't remember using it over a campfire, and I'm not quickly finding images of our using it that way in photos and videos. I wouldn't hesitate using it over a small fire, under constant attendance, and remove it as soon as cooking finished - as with a Firebox Nano stove. The pans are holding up well. I am not seeing any of the Teflon coating coming off. When that does happen, I will throw the pan away. I find this sentence interesting in GSI's caution statement, "Not approved for in-home use." I use the Bugaboo pan on our electric stove in the kitchen all the time to make bannock. It's still working great. For everyone's reference, this is what GSI Outdoors says about their Pinnacle pan today (March 2021)... GSI OUTDOORS PINNACLE PAN CAUTION STATEMENT "CAUTION: Never heat to extreme temperatures or allow to boil dry. Pan intended for stovetop use only. Not for use with microwave ovens, conventional ovens or open campfires. Pinnacle cookware is expressly approved for camp stove use. Not approved for in-home use. Handle may become hot when cooking. Always use caution when gripping handle. Never expose handle to direct flame."

What a fantastic review! But why would they make 2 pans that are so similar in size, weight and cost? Makes no sense. And is that a rubber coating on the handle? One would have to cut that off for open fire cooking.
@wobblyotteroutdoors

Thank you. Yes, the handle has a rubber sleeve. It would be fairly easy to cut a lenthwise slit in the rubber to remove it.

Hi Cris, great review! I have two of the Pinnacle Basecamper sets, the large and small, and they all nest together into the big bag. I do not have the smaller sets frypan in it though, I actually use it for eggs at home. The Pinnacle stuff is great, better than Teflon for non stick. Hey, putting up some vids shortly on my new Skottle on IG, I got another one, the mini-me version :) Anyways, dig all of your videos!

🤣 Yep. Pinnacle is more robust. Bugaboo works over small fires and stoves just fine. Neither one would fair well in a blazing fire. 🔥
