Hi everyone, a quick update to provide more information about the Pioneer CT-A7X and CT-A9X. I've made a new video on the CT-A7X here: New Pioneer CT-A7X: kzitem.info/news/bejne/upCZq2WNeqCfi6A I've written a detailed article here: liquidaudio.com.au/pioneer-ct-a7x-cassette-deck-service/

Might be the most robust mechanism used on a 3head deck , ever. First 1-2 times you ll hate working on iti (especially synchronizing the gears) , but after 5+ decks , it s a real treat to work on , almost fully made out of metal , huge flywheels , etc...

Yes, lovely mechs indeed. I never hated working on them, though I can see why some would! I've written extensively about these decks/mechs over the years and actually describe the indexing process in this video, from 2017, more details in the description and pinned comment.. 😉

Wow. I had this thing open for a couple of weeks trying to figure what I broke when changing the belts. Not even the darn service manual mentions you have to put the gearing back together exactly and take the index marks into account!

@@LiquidAudio I have CT-A7X (black, with green FL display, counter and cassette well light) which I purchased new back in 1985, CT-A9 (silver) and the CT-A9X (black). Regarding Service manuals missing the mechanical description, these 2 deck have 3 service manuals; service manual part number for CT-A7(X,D) is ARP-450-0, CT-A9(X,D) manual PN is ARP-449-0, and third one is shared for CT-A7 and A9, PN ARP-462-0 named " Circuit & Mechanizm Description". That one has all the mechanical and CPU, BLE timing charts of different modes, however it does not mention about the alignment directly (pin hole and the V notch) but reading it carefully the alignment can be done. Using the markers the alignment is much faster of course. There are 4 bulletins to (2 shared 7&9, 1 for 7 and 1 for 9) about PLL modds for A9 motor drive and PS transistor replacement 7&9, all manuals and bulletins I have are original.

@@robertkovacs6563 Hi Robert, thanks for your comment and yes, I also have the original factory manuals as I work on a few of these, as well as owning a CT-A9X. I don't think I have the third manual though, thanks for the details! I'm sure my A9X manual has all the timing stuff too, but critical mechanical details were missing. I made a video about the CT-A7 if interested: kzitem.info/news/bejne/upCZq2WNeqCfi6A, plus there's an article over on my website about it too: liquidaudio.com.au/pioneer-ct-a7x-cassette-deck-service/

the CT-9AX, like quite a few other pioneer products was an export only deck that was somewhere between the Japanese CT-A7D and the CT-A9D. Though some claim it's the exact same deck as the CT-A9D (resembles the look and name quite closely) in fact, the CT-A9D has quite a bit more inside of it and weighs just over a kilo more at 11.2kg but the CT-A9X weights about a kilo more then the CT-A7D which makes me believe it's "based" on both of them but takes some aspects of each one to make a "middle-of-the-road" line slightly below the Japanese model Pioneer CT-A9D. All 3 have the same "Reference Master Mechanism" with just slightly different electronics in each one.

Hi, thanks for your comment though not quite correct. The CT-A9X was at the time the best deck Pioneer sold and sat at the top of their range. It was preceded by the CT-A9 and superseded by the almost identical CT-A9D. Internally the A9X and A9D are basically identical. The weight difference is because of the wooden side cheeks which the CT-A9D came standard with, whereas the A9X (a deck I own) did not in some markets. Chassis-wise, minus the wood, they weigh the same. Performance-wise they are also basically the same, though the A9D has amorphous heads. They are both quite different from the CT-A7X, though that deck also has the reference master mech and I serviced one only a couple of weeks ago. I've worked on quite a few of these including my own and they are lovely machines. UPDATE: New article about the Pioneer CT-A7X @ my website: liquidaudio.com.au/pioneer-ct-a7x-cassette-deck-service/ New video about the CT-A7X here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/upCZq2WNeqCfi6A

Oh f*** you are very right about getting this thing re-indexed. Man. Thank you for pointing out the V-notch and the dot. That safed my tape-deck. I was able to replace the belts and it's working again! Obviously I started googling for videos AFTER I noticed that I messed up. Anyways - have a nice day.

Oh does anyone know if they have any issue with the direct drive motor on the ct-a9x. Mine if starting from cold start you can hear in the high frequency some definit fluttering. I wasnt sure ifbthe bulletins were in regards to this. Seems to be a power up issue forbthe power supply? Since after it warms up and turning it off and on you finally hear the motor go into a higher frequency. Its a bit of a pain but after 15 minutes of warm up and several on and offs it plays perfect. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
@LiquidAudio

Drive frequency must be very carefully assessed and adjusted using a precision frequency counter or the motor won't run well.

I use commercial vendors for my belts and other parts. You would need to specify belt dimensions and have an account. There are online sellers selling belt kits, though I cannot comment on the quality of the parts included.

Could You explain, what happens when it is deindexed ? I mean moment 1:30s. I have Pioneer ct-939 mark II and I think that this is similar mechanism. My problem is that it blocks itself in different moments. After some time it bakcs to normal. And after some time again it stucks. Forward , rewind doesnt work any. Play works for a moment and draws part of tape.
@LiquidAudio

Hi Sebastian, tricky to get into the details without both of us in the same room and with the mech in front of us, unfortunately. I will say that, when de-indexed, the mechanical aspects of door motion, cassette loading and head block movement don't occur smoothly and will jam up. Forcing it at this point will break things.

@LiquidAudio

@@seboniusz It's gear driven in this case so you should not force it, but when the deck operates normally, a small push will initiate the powered drawer close operation. If the powered closure isn't working, that must be resolved.

Hey bud where did you get the belts as your capstan belt looks like an original. I have done 4 of these decks and 2 of the a7's. Also done two ct-93's a 3 ct-91's and the almighty ct-a1(really was the PL 7000). These were all done in the last 15 years. Had good success with finding original belts and pinch rollers from pioneer for the master transport until around 2014 maybe. Last one was done in 2016(CT+a1)1. The Ct-a1 was the most difficult. The least fun are the ct-f900,950 and the 1250. Have done probably 5 of the mix. People have to know that original belts are always best but are rare anymore. The capstan belt is wide and thin. The length and width are very important so was wanting your source, thanks.

Not even Pioneer Service techs could properly repair these along with the CT9R models. There's a reason why customers waited months to get their unit back, no one wanted to work on it. And when you finally got it back it still didn't work right. Plus they were misadvertised as being direct drive, in fact by Nakamichi, Revox or Tandberg standards they were not Direct Drive in the least bit !

Thanks for your comment and yes it gives me great satisfaction to be one of a handful who can properly repair and calibrate these beautiful machines. Overhauling this one (mine) took the best part of a day. It definitely is direct-drive, the main capstan motor is a DD motor and the mech is superb. I've owned a ZX-7, also currently own a 670ZX and I work on a ton of cassette decks these days.
