We want an earth on which it is worth living. An earth on which nature and civilization are not mutually exclusive. This is why a sustainable turnaround in energy and raw materials is at the heart of our work. With our research in the areas of climate-neutral energy systems, resource-efficient processes and circular products, we make concrete contributions to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The focus is on SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Towns), 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Protection Measures) and 14 (Living Under Water).
Some examples show that the young scientists of Fraunhofer UMSICHT in particular provide important impulses with their research work:
Felix Thoma is investigating how healthy, high-quality food can be cultivated sustainably.
Sung Youn (Sanja) Suh develops catalysts for CO2 reduction.
Alina Gawel is researching the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to store green electricity in the form of valuable synthetic building blocks.
Mohamed Eldakadosi optimizes sustainable, cross-sectoral energy systems in neighbourhoods.
Lukas Rüller is working on processing sewage sludge in such a way that important resources such as phosphorus can be recovered.
Juliane Strobel is working on various battery designs to make them more recyclable later.
