These Pioneer 1000 series decks are very underrated in my opinion. I found a 1020L a few years back in a local antique mall, was dirt cheap @ 25.00. Cleaned it up, adjusted it a little here and there, been a pleasure to own, super reliable. The expensive part of ownership, was finding hubs for the 10.5" reels and tape of course. She seems to prefer those old Maxell's the best.

@@toddarnold1677 No easy way to do it that would improve fidelity without additional mods. Easier to get an RT-1020H that runs at the higher speeds from the factory.

I still have my 1011L and works perfectly for a 40+ year old machine! I like the blue VU meter light mod you did to yours. How'd you do it?

First, make certain your motor is indeed bad because they are expensive. Search eBay for "em1446 capstan" and try to find one in the $300 range.

Thinking of picking on of these up for super cheap. Would you recommend one for recording music?

Absolutely

@@5thcomm Thank you for replying, but I might have worded my question wrong, I specifically meant recording music in a home studio environment via live instruments, (guitars, bass, drums, vocals), should still work fine, right? There's only 2 channels so I'm not planning on doing all 4 at once but with a 7 1/2 IPS speed it might not be as high quality as it could be. But they seem really well built so it shouldn't matter too much?
