A less expemsive alternative to a true directional drill, probably best suited for residential/small commercial use in limied spaces.

I worked with a same assembly that pushed 20' drill rods in a 25' pit. Was worth $millions. 3" rods that would pull HDPE 200 mm diameter for 60 or 100 metres from pit to pit. Still a great deal of work but we could.never set foot on your land and pass a massive pipe under you without disturbing anyone much. Thrust angles were absolutely vital. And shoves rock right out of the way.

You need slightly longer rams so you dont have to do the half steps, or slightly shorter sections wiuld work. It would also be wise to add a loop over the top, or holes on either side of the chassis so the unit can be easily lifted and lowered using the mini ex you power it with. Save the manual handling of a heavy piece of equipment.

Lots of small details like you mentioned would be nice. Also, a way to clear between those pipe sections where he had to locate and clear it each time. It probably wasn’t necessary for him to clear it but it was obviously his preference so it’d be nice for the manufacturer to consider that use case

You’re absolutely right, I’m from Ventura county in California, anything in the conejo valley is easy to pull, hardly rocky and if it is, it’s usually gravel type rocky. If it is Rocky, we’ll usually reroute to main sewer and use a liner to repair the rest of the mainline, main reasoning being the one you stated, you get stuck in rocky areas, the machine pulls itself into the wall of the hole.

I live on the side of an esker, so 63 is an understatement. It's just rocks all the way down ranging from like 2 inch ones up to 200 inch ones. You are lucky if you can even burry half a spade before you hit a rock. Digging is a pain, even with an excavator.

If you are running across a field... there is no need to unscrew the pipes on the return trip. Just push the pipe through to the next pit and move your machine to the next pit... continue to the last pit and then unscrew the pipe. The cable follows the whole way. If you are going that far, I agree, just dig the trench and be done with it.

used an old model once, inside were a set of grips, you pulled the entire mechanism out and flipped it around, when you pushed it would grab and when you turned it around, it would grab on the reverse because basically you flipped the grabbers around. something like cantilever, the more you pull the harder it would grip. this looks like a nice set up but the manual moving it around would disturb your levels, with the inset grabber, your entire frame stayed in place as you just flipped the grabbers reversed, put the plug on the end and start pulling or attach the water line and pull it back to the outside.

Crappy, inefficient system only good for very limited conditions. Why would I waste money on a product like that which requires that much equipment. A pneumatic mole would be far more efficient and cost effective for small jobs and an HDD better for larger jobs. You can even buy boring drills to mount on a skid steer. No way would you ever see a system like this on a real job. To many better options out there.
