The current iteration of Presbyterian Mixture bears NO resemblance to the blend, back in the early 1970s. Them Latakia then was Syrian, and the Virginias were exquisite. In the tin, it smelled like a fresh pack of Lucky Strike. The tobacco in the tin tasted salty! God, I loved that stuff!

Had a tin laying around for years. Opened it the other day. Just bought 10 more tins. I watched this video long ago and didn’t open it because of the “meh” response BRADLEY had to it. I’m glad I tried it finally. It’s a good early spring English.

You should have a tongue bite section for your vital stats. I have an example that you could do. "Cat's got your tongue" for a biter, "Crouching tiger" for a blend that has potential to bite if you are too agressive with it, and "toothless tiger" for no tongue bite. Just an idea.
@stuffandthingsyoutube

Presbyterian is indeed a grower. I had an amazing 3rd bowl of this, then I couldn't seem to replicate the experience. I tried different pipes, pairing with tea, coffee, wine, etc., but nope. Then all of a sudden, and inexplicably, maybe on bowl 10, it just clicked. I finally "get it". And I'm obsessed. What a fun hobby this is. 😊

You’re right Brad. This is a creamy one. Just the right amount of lat, virginia forward with orientals as the co-star. Really easy-smoking. I got this “goldilocks” out of the tin. Great mechanics, fired up on the false light. This will be my go-to English over Skiff Mix.
@platinumplum

This has been my daily smoke for sometime now, mild, smooth, creamy, all of the good things about virginia and orientals with none of the draw backs (for my tastes anyway) with latakia hanging in the background, distant enough that you have to search it out, but no so far it remains out of one's grasp.

I opened my first tin of PresMix and without airing it out put it in my Missouri Meerschaum and lit up. You were right as rain about the "drowned rat." It was not easy to keep lit, and the bottom of the bowl ended with a small ball of soggy and unsmokable tobacco. I'll give it the air treatment and try again.

Excellent insightful review. It sounds like the coarse cut allows the flavours and aromas to unfold more slowly and enjoyably. The ribbon cuts burn well, but the flavour tends to flash and then disappear more quickly. I've heard that oriental leaf tends to have a waxy exterior due to sun curing. Which holds in the essential oils and results in a more fragrant smoke. Sounds reasonable. When blends have oriental leaf they seem to enter another dimension. You can really detect it, even in the finer aromatics.

For me, as a piper of only 9 months duration, Presbyterian has definitely been a grower too. It is really excellent. If you put it in a jar and forget about it for 6 months then return to it, I feel it smooths out excellently. A little of the spice is replaced by what I can only call velvet. I found the same happens with 965. I jarred both at the same time, came back after 6 months, and now I can't put them down. Delightful. Incidentally for the UK at least, this comes in a 40g pouch.

Nailed that review. That elusive oriental note is just like a Turkish Oregano. Go to the spice rack and pop a little piece of oregano into your mouth and that is it. Metallic , pungent , bitter taste. If you really want to get the note down to near exact, find some Penzey's Greek Spice and take a smell. Exact smell to that oriental. Read the label and sure enough, Turkish Oregano. That oriental does blend in well with the Virginia and Latakia. Great smoke. Any yes, don't give up on it after your first smoke. It grows on you.

Earl Baldwin said “My thoughts grow in the aroma of that particular tobacco." I don't share that sentiment, but it is one of the more interesting tobaccos I've tried. There is apparently both a German version and an international version, I've heard the former isn't that great. Also - not sure about it being wet, but the sample I received burned up way too quick. Need an XL corncob to fit plenty in.

+Jonathan Cooper Red Cake (McClelland 5100) is great, but it is probably one of the more one-dimensional smokes on the market, since it is pure red Virginia leaf. Something like Presbyterian has a lot more going on: several different kinds of leaf, cured differently, blended together in one mixture. Sometimes I straight, good smoke like 5100 is perfect, so I'm certainly not criticizing the blend, but you'll find others that are more complex.
@diab_low

+Jonathan Cooper Those are certainly a little more complex--classic varieties of blends. Squadron Leader has latakia, which is always an interesting first time experience, while Cabbie's Mixture is the classic Virginia / Perique combo. (I haven't had Cabbie's Mixture, but I've had other Va/Pers.)
