Late to the party, but honestly.....your beautifully upgraded Piper Arrow 180 is absolutely sensational! It's upgraded and equipped with some of the best avionics on the market. With it's fuel efficient Lycoming IO-360 engine (overhauled by Penn Yan Aero), upgraded 3-blade Hartlzel CSP, this is a rock-solid, safe, and fuel efficient, SEL/complex airplane.

The arrow is probably the best complex trainer in aviation. The plane has no bad tendencies and for cherokee flyers is a natural. I've right seat flown one and since my plane at the time was a cherokee, it was about as easy as a complex plane could be. If only they were faster, I'd say they were the best plane for anyone. The slow speed though combined with the higher priced annuals means for many like me... the Cherokee made more sense. I will say though that arrow has one sweet looking paint job. Looks fantastic!
@mikemazzola6595

Very well done, thank you. The reason I believe for the popularity of the Arrow as reflected in the high sales numbers compared to aircraft like the Commander is the Cherokee effect. Lots of pilots with either time in a Cherokee or ownership of one could transition to the Arrow with almost effortless ease after the complex endorsement. My first airplane was a Cherokee (but with time in Cessna and Piper aircraft). I now own an Arrow III (PA28R-201). It is every bit as easy to fly as reported in this review. I fly it cross country IFR mostly and it is a perfect IFR platform. Overall, simply a great airplane to own and operate.

Listen, I can remember back in nineteen seventy four, I was like eight years old, My dad is flying this aircraft. This is an amazing aircraft. If I'm not mistaken on the top speed.I believe it was like two hundred and ten miles per hour. He originally taught me how to fly at a young age, I couldn't land, But I was able to fly around in a One seventy two skylark. But I was always amazed with the Arrow.

I had to use the override to hold the gear up since the engine quit. Keeping the gear up I was able to have more glide range. It gave more time to see if we could get some power back in the engine.I was with a student working on complex rating. I was able to get enough power to maintain altitude to get back to the home airport. A valve spring and 3 piston rings came out when we took it apart. It was well over its TBO. I had been telling the shop it was not putting out full power. We were over flat farm land so it had plenty of options. It was the 180 hp engine. It has a steep decent with gear down.
@aerolife1646
3 жыл бұрын
You handle the situation smartly and correctly. The shop should have checked the engine in detail especially when it's got high hours and you reported a noticeable lack of power. I personally would not have flown until it was checked out better but that is not always an option. Thank you for sharing your experience.
@flybouy11
2 жыл бұрын
When your engine quits the landing gear drops and your decent rate increases a bunch. It happened to me with a student. To prevent that from happening you can override with a lever you can do to extend your glide range. Nursed it to home field and put it in shop.That was the last of that engine.

My experience with lycoming engines and POH is that the POH is wrong when it tells you full mixture below xyz altitude. Leaning regardless of altitude on taxi and non-movement minimizes fouling. I figured it out on my own, but later conversations with A&P's confirmed that that is what lycoming recommends you do.

Great review. This type of review is so instrumental in marketing aircraft, more sellers should do the same. This particular aircraft is exceptional. I have quite a bit of Arrow time many years ago and its a very nice bird for the transition to complex and for shorter hops. I would for sure own one, and the panel in this aircraft is awesome, but at that money, there are aircraft that I personally would prefer over the Arrow. This one seems too nice to turn it into a trainer, but it does seem to me there aren't enough of these as trainers out there. Best of luck with the sale.

I flew one of these to ORD once. I enjoyed it much. The only issue was that the tower kept asking us to reduce our approach speed -- finally the gear started down by itself. I held it up with the manual override. All went just fine. But then, the tale goes sour. I landed and returned without a problem. But the next renter-pilot flew it somewhere, and on landing, the nose gear collapsed. Right away, the rental owner was pointing his finger at me, asking what I did to his airplane at O'hare? "We had a nice, soft landing, everything was on the numbers." "Well, I don't know what you did to it, but the nose gear collapsed on a landing a few minutes ago." Very, very fortunately, I had a passenger with me whom he phoned, and he told him it was a fine flight. Nothing untoward. No hard landing. The owner never apologized to me. I never flew one of his airplanes again or even spoke to him. But, I liked the Arrow.

You are so smart if I were taking lessons I would hope to have you or someone who as thorough as you teaching me I have question if you are going to land and having trouble seeing the airport landing strip I would like you to tell me and show me on one of your videos please thank you Travis

That is a good point, I'll try to point that out in future videos. One reason we can't find the unfamiliar airports on VFR flights is the depth and distance perception. Example: at 3000ft, how far should we be looking for 10 miles distance? With modern avionics, even ForeFlight has extended runway lines. You line up with the line to find the runway. In basic VFR, you find prominent landmarks on the map and locate those. At night it helps to have pilot activated lights. Even on VRF flights, you can use IFR equipment and indicators to locate an airport.

I am new to the aviation and stunned how smart people still haven’t figured this out. Change, or add to, that white landing light to a really good amber rally light. White light blinds the pilot in fog/snow and also creates a “bigger” visibility shield vs amber light.

@@GWNHomestead , I get it. Why front light that is supposed to make things visible is white though? Don’t they know any better? White light is the worst light in every inclimate weather? - rain, fog, snow? I mean, these aren’t supposed to be stupid people. Why white, instead of amber?

@@GWNHomestead same FAA as yours, I am rookie here, when it comes to planes. I’ve landed a Cherokee, pa28, and a Cessna with the landing light on - I promise you that my Baja design amber fog lights on my vehicle would give greater visibility than the landing light on these planes. Naturally, light temperature, kelvin, and wave length, of an amber light is a lot better than the white/blueish light. Not only in bad weather, good weather as well. Still puzzling why a landing light is white though.

I got a Complex endorsement in an Arrow...wonderful airplane. And yes, things are different for pilots when we are on the ground. Peace.

I'm going to tell you guys something right now , okay, I have to. And I'll bet she is absolutely correct. But. In world war two which was many years ago, The fastest fire plane that we had at that point in time was f four u corsair, But it was with a four blade prop. I don't know.I just thought I would tell everybody this. That's a beautiful aircraft right there and she is one head of a pilot.
