Warning! The order of addition in your video is reversed and dangerous. In the case of piranha preparation, you should slowly add H2O2 to H2SO4. If done in reverse, a high concentration of Caro acid and other peroxy acids are produced and there is a danger of explosion after adding anything organic (and depending on concentration, even without). Only a low concentration of chemicals makes it quasi safe in your case.

Didn’t know thanks for mentioning. I thought “acid to water“ but it sounds legitimate what you say.
@ejkozan

@@THYZOID Yeah, acid to water is always true XD but in this case you are not adding pure water but very reactive oxidant solution and you create even stronger one. And here you have standard example of chemistry when order matters: acid to peroxide makes very concentrated reactive species, peroxide to acid keeps active species concentration low true reaction. It is good that you had low concentration chemicals, becouse you made everything hot. It could be something else with concentrated ones. I have made liter of piranha in lab for glass cleaning and it was slow controlled process, with dropwise addition and cooling. Hot in situ piranha production was done only on small scales to clean nasties in glass frit in filter funels.

The conventional wisdom probably doesn't really make a difference. I'm not an expert so do at your own risk, but Cody from Cody's lab showed experimentally that it doesn't really cause any splashing or boiling no matter which order you add acids/other liquids

@@duncanfox7871 Yes, but we are not talking now about acid/water mixing but reaction between acid and peroxide with produces peroxyacid. And here, like in many chemical reactions (mixing of water and acid is not chemical reaction!) order matters.

@@duncanfox7871 people like you, who think they know better because they saw it done wrong and nothing happened is the reason accidents happen. There is a reason these rules/cautions/recommendations exist. Safety FIRST. No safety measure should be ignored on purpose, or demonstrated just for views on youtube. That is how people die. As we found out here, only by chance this happened not to turn into a truly dangerous situation. If someone repeated it with stronger chemicals they can suffer severe injuries. Those battery acid attack victims are horribly disfigured and this makes it much more violent. You don't want to risk that just because "I saw Cody do it and nothing splashed".

Is it possible to make salts of caros acid? Or does it decompose to quickly?

I guess it would decompose quite quickly. But if you happen to find a somewhat stable salt trough research I’ll be happy if you let me know and we’re gonna try it out!

Normally this reaction is done using 30% H2O2. We only have access to 11,9%. On this concentration piranha acid has to be prepared quite differently and there are no papers on this to be found anywhere.

the copper would dissolve to form copper sulfate so yes. if you throw in copper it will dissolve. plastic however will not dissolve or dissolve very slowly if your copper scrap has some stuck to it.
