Pirates Port: where do you get your super cool atmospheric background sounds of ships creaking, waves and seabirds? I could fall asleep to that. Asking for a friend. 😁

I enjoyed this. I grew up in the rural areas of the Midwest United States in the 70s and 80s. My parents ate and drank at a tavern that the family lived upstairs. The walls were plaster trowlled and walnut wainescoated. There was one meal to order. Shotguns hung on the walls. My parents even let me have a glass of the occasional beer. Those times are long since gone. The wife owner was even a sheriff deputy. We live in a Latigous society today

The town Charlotte Amalie (ah-mah-lee-ah) was originally called Taphus, or "Beer House" on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. I spend many nights drinking beer in the various taphus bars there, around the late 1980s.

When I lived on the East coast I used to go down to Ocracoke Island in NC. Blackbeard is a well known name down there. Pirates have been my theme for my Halloween decorations for the past 3 years.

You're videos have been a great help to me as I'm running a pirate campaign in D&D. So thank you. As for suggestions, I'd love more videos on positions and duties on pirate ships. Like what the captain, first mate, bosun, quartermaster, and so on did on a day to day bases. Cheers!

You can still see in places the Pub started out as a normal house. There were Inns too or coaching inns on main roads which were more the realm of the Highwayman. Then as now some pubs are frequented by a particular group of people and you wouldn't be made particularly welcome in said pub or tavern or the locals would want to know if you had connections with the law or impress (in the case of a sailors pub) before you were made welcome.

I've always wondered about taverns. I love your videos! I grew up with pirate stories and things like pirates of the caribbean. This topic is so cool to me. Thanks for all you do. On another note, where do you get all your sources for all this info? I'd love to know.

Hi Pirates Port! Love this channel - just found it, gradually watching all the vids. Love love love all* things pirate (even though a "friend" likes to try to tell me "you know they were cold blooded killers and criminals and lived in filthy drunken disease and injury ridden unsanitary brutal desperate conditions, don't you?!") Ha! Like THAT'S gonna change anything! 😜 Was watching some Black Sails clips on KZitem and found this channel. *Okay maybe not the killing and torture and drunken disease and injury ridden filthiness and desperation but c'mon people, there's this eternal undeniable lure beyond those things, okay?!?!

Seems like the Admiral Benbow Inn from is more like a pub than an inn, as they only seem to have one boarder: Billy Bones, or "Captain."

Awesome video man! Would love to get your take on general music from the time at sea and taverns as well. Shanties, instrumentation and the like, cheers.
@ThePiratesPort

I'd like to do a video on this one day but the problem would be lack of visuals for it. I can tell you that shanties weren't yet a thing in the golden age of piracy nor were accordions. the music of that time was more along the lines of what we associate with the middle ages (sort of like what you'd hear at a renaissance fair). you can search for "broadside ballads" and that'll give you some examples.

No, but you could look at colonial newspapers and see the prices goods were trading for in bulk and then divide down from there to get approximate prices.
