Why you did not show what you talking about and not the indicator

Would have been great if you zoomed out so we could see what your were doing, but good concept for a video. Thanks

the piston returned to the same point every time it was tightened. For the guy who's not using them all day everyday - keep your piston and your money in your pocket.

I had a BXA wedge on my old 11" Logan...best upgrade ever! My new 14"x40 came with a CXA piston type. It does work ok but there are time when under heavy load you can see the holder bend down especially if the tool point of contact is below the center of the piston. The wedge type does hold the toolholder better and is worth the extra money. Colin

Yeah, I wish I started off with the BXA. I had a few high pucker moments parting off with the piston type, hopefully the wedge and some gib tightening will stiffen things up.

i have a clausing colchester 15,and i find repeatability with my cxa piston holder is fine.Height adjustment locking and a good lathe, the piston type is fine. The only exception would be gun smithing

Forgot to mention that 5/8 tool holders are available for AXA tool posts. I believe Bostar calls them the 250-101XL part number.

Good video again. I pretty much knew this but Grizzly includes the piston with the G4003G that I got last year. The one biggest problem is that the holder clamp lever is only adjustable to two positions (2 O'clock and 8 O'clock) without drilling and threading new holes whereas the wedge is infinitely adjustable. I have had no problems with accuracy but that handle is a pain. Doug

if you are going for repeatability it would be a good idea to have the height adjusting lock nut tight... as it is if you bump the adjusting nut your test results are invalid...

Unless you are doing heavy work, there isn't much difference between them especially for the home machinist. And even for heavy work you usually hogging material to the finished size. Quality of QC build is probably more important than the locking mechanism.

Thanks for the demo. it;s cool to actually see the difference rather than just believe hearsay. That being said, I do wonder how much of a factor, wear plays in the test. (ie, piston typed has 20+ years on it) I personally have never used a piston type, just got some good advice right out of the gate, It appears

Nice face plate hanging above the window. Did you make it or purchase it. If you purchased it where did you get it. I like the slots and holes combination. I also just bought the wedge style tool kit my self, so far I'm real happy with it.

You have limited your study of all the possible sources of repeatability by assuming all variance is from the tool post. Try pushing/pulling on the compound then cross slide then carriage to verify movement sources.

OK, but what does anyone producing a dictionary really know about industrial terms? I can think of probably dozens of heavy duty mechanics over the years and most either use the term or they all sure know what it means. Excavator operators, cat skinners, drillers use it as well. The dictionary may not define the term to how we use it but everyone else knows what it means so it is an industrial term that does have a definite meaning. I've used it most of my life.
