I bought this smoker last summer as we were finishing construction on our new house. It's a Wal-Mart exclusive manufactured by Pit Boss, so support from Pit Boss has been problematic. Wal-Mart shipped me three different units, every one of which arrived destroyed in shipping because they weren't shipped on pallets and these are packaged disassembled and laying on their back in a thin cardboard box with all the legs and wheels and other heavy hardware packed inside the cavity. That causes the hopper at the back to be crushed when they try to lift it with a fork lift. Pit Boss said the hopper couldn't be replaced (not true), so thus the three different units from Wal-Mart instead of a couple of replacement parts from Pit Boss. The third one arrived with minimal damage to the hopper so I was able to piece it together with the first one and create one working unit with minimal damage.
The smoker worked fine the first few times I used it, but was blowing the GFCI outlet. (The electricians were supposed to have wired a dedicated outlet for this without GFCI, but that's a different story!) Now that the outlet is fixed and we've moved into some cooler weather, I'm trying to smoke some things again and now I'm having trouble with the controller erroring out ("Err" on the display and the ignitor symbol flashing) indicating that the ignitor wasn't working. The smoker's still lit, but at that point the controller quits feeding pellets. The troubleshooting from the manual didn't help because the ignitor obviously still works, so unless it's an intermittent open when it gets hot, then there's no useful information on what's happening, and there's no lower level control on this "smart" controller. The app is also useless for this as it just quits updating and also provides no additional control or status than the front panel. All you get is temperature setting, current temperature, and the two meat probe temperatures.
Contacting Pit Boss by chat, the person on the other end obviously wasn't looking at the documentation for this unit, but didn't really care. She assured me that what she was saying was right (which it isn't). At any rate, I put this video together to illustrate the problem and that the unit doesn't do what she said it would. This is primarily for their use, but if it helps anyone else make a decision about buying one of these, that's fine too. If they give me a solution, I'll add the information here. This could be a great smoker if it wasn't for all the issues that are really the fault of the manufacturer!
