Sir William Forbes, first laird of Pitsligo, began work on Pitsligo Castle in 1424 with the tower and courtyard wall. Alexander Forbes, 5th laird of Pitsligo, repaired the castle in 1577 after massive damage made by members of Clan Gordon between 1571 and 1573. On June 6th, 1633, Alexander Forbes, 9th laird of Pitsligo was created the first Lord Pitsligo. Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo, supported both the 1715 Jacobite rebellion led by James Edward Stuart (the "Old Pretender") and the 1745 rebellion led by “Bonnie Prince Charlie.” After the 1746 Stuart defeat at Culloden, the British government seized the Pitsligo Estate, ransacked Pitsligo Castle, declared Forbes an outlaw, and placed a price on his head. Pitsligo Castle decayed for two centuries until 1988 when American publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes, a descendant of Lord Pitsligo, purchased the castle ruins. Malcolm Forbes died in February 1990 and in 1995, his children gave the castle to the Pitsligo Castle Trust, a charity formed for the purpose of maintaining the castle.
