Pitting occurs due to the local breakdown of the oxidized
film covering a metal surface in the presence of an electrolyte
. It is an electrochemical process that depends upon the
composition and microstructure of the corroding metal, and
composition of the electrolyte (3). Pitting is considered by
many to be more dangerous than general corrosion to the safe
performance of a structure because a pit may grow into the
material unobserved and extend from micron to sub-millimeter
to a critical size unnoticed due to surface coverage of the pit by
corrosion products . Pitting is composed of three stages:
initiation followed by metastable growth that leads to stable
growth under the right balance between electrochemical and
mass transport mechanisms . The designation of stable pit
growth indicates that the pit is actively expanding. The balance
between electrochemical and mass transport mechanisms may
or may not result in uniform linear growth rates for all points in
the pit surface. Stable pit growth is the focus of this study.
