@@theotherjared9824 Yeah, but sometimes you can have an "interpretation" that's simply flat-out _wrong._ I mean if there's one thing I've learned from conspiracy theorists, it's that you can read anything into anything if you jump through enough hoops. If the writer intended something to mean X, then it means X, plain and simple (barring of course _bad_ writing that prevents it from really _working_ as a metaphor for X). Talking about how to "interpret" a work, character, or narrative is only valid when the writer intentionally left it _open_ to interpretation.

Nowdays, the way the internet is, ANY time that any characters show even the SLIGHTEST trait of being friendly to each other, seems to be interpreted as, "They're in love!", or "They're in some kind of romantic relationship!", or that there's "sexual tension or interest". It seems that there are people online who just... NEED characters to be together in more than just being nice or being platonic with each other now. God. Just look at the Brony fandom. It seemed like 70 to 80% of that fandom was obsessed with the characters all being romantically involved with each other, in every combination, despite the fact that it was a kid's show and these characters showed absolutely NO interest in each other beyond, "We're friends.". To the internet, "We're friends" seems to equal, "We're friends... with benefits!".

I think that there's just a large portion of the population that has fantasies that the world works like a romance novel. There's probably some escapist psychological thing going on. "Life is crap and it's never been crappier. The world feels like it's coming apart at the seams. I have to grasp at something I can control to make me feel better. My biggest complaint with the movie isn’t huge but it’s important to me because I’m Italian. I found some instance of them movie oddly not Italian enough. Luca’s parents are voiced by Mia Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan and it’s so offputting. Also the fact that they don’t call their grandma “Nonna” is such a missed opportunity. I was satisfied with the setting of Portorosso and the characters but I would have liked to know more about their culture other than just “they hate sea monsters and eat pasta” idk maybe have some musicians playing or smthn. I really did like how Guilia said the names of cheeses as if they were saints that was hilarious.
@VelkanAngels

Thing is though, that as the guy who made it said, Italy was just the scene in which the movie took place. It wasn't a movie ABOUT Italy. Like Beauty & the Beast didn't contain information about the culture of that French town. If not for the odd French dialect, it might as well have taken place in any other village from the same time period. Additional "Italian stuff" in the movie would've probably just consisted of more stereotypical stuff than "their cuisine has a lot of pasta" (which, let's face it, isn't exactly an untrue stereotype). I think it's fine just as it is, personally.

It’s due to society being very sexist by implying that two men being affectionate towards each other is a sign of gayness. What makes this worse, many gay fetishists will reinforce these beliefs while claiming to “stand up” for gay men.
@grownmystical8796

I really liked Luca. It's rare for Disney to make films with good morals, or for film studios to make movies about genuine and pure male friendship in general these days. Edit: basically, I think it's a solid children's film without woke politics or encouraging complete degenerate behavior. It's not amazing, but it's good.
@DigitalDiscDreamer

I don’t understand how it’s seen as a gay allegory. Like I get that it has a “coming out” element as some would say that Luca and Alberto have to come out of the water and blend in with the human world, but this has nothing to do with sexuality even though coincidentally it is about two boys. The allegory would work much better if it was about immigrants coming into a new nation and trying to fit in where immigrants a looked down upon. This makes much more sense as even Lucas’ parents and grandmother are accepted at the end for being fish people. The moral of the story would be that it’s okay to be proud of your heritage in a new land, even if certain people want you to conform and assimilate.

The "hiding your identity" theme doesn't really work for an immigrant narrative, but it fits a queer one perfectly. Also this movie uses a lot of standard romantic movies tropes in the scenes with Luca and Alberto (them staring together at the sunset, the train scene at the end, etc...). Also there are semantics choices (they use a lot words like identity, acceptance, and shame) that are pretty common in queer discourse. Finally, as a Bi, Non-binary person, I can assure you that this movie represented very well my first gay crush, the internalized homophobia that I had to conquer and the process of coming out of my shell. I'm not saying hat Luca and Alberto are undoubtely gay for each other, but that a queer reading of the film isn't just possible, but is also very very easy and feels intentional on the part of the filmakers

My take: It's an innocent, low stakes movie that is easy to enjoy the whole way through. I'm sick of high stakes, save-the-world movies as they've been the only ones produced for the past few years and it's getting very old. It was also refreshing to have a truly bad villain for once (not another freaking twist), but they should have punished him more at the end as just getting wet just isn't a satisfying retribution. The limpdick dad also drove me nuts, there hasn't been a single real father figure in movies for a while with even an ounce of meat to show for it. Gulia's dad made up for Luca's father, but it still bugs me to no end. They wouldn't have even needed to change his role as a distracted dad, they could have just had him too busy with work or hobbies to be present in the family. I also think that Gulia's dad should have gone with Luca to find Alberto after he ran off, though I know it would have changed the flow a bit, it would have been a good point to explain why, at the end, Alberto wanted to stay with him (he would have a closer connection after such a heart to heart moment). Now on to the bigger issue, the community. Because it's pride month, the LGBTQ+ community is especially bold so I understand why the ship is a thing. But I hate that such a tiny minority of the population is able to skew the whole point of movies and TV. I wish they could be OK with just living their lives for once, but nobody cares about them anymore so the bad actors in their community act up to get more attention. The same things happen in political and religious circles, and it drives me nuts. Just be happy with who you are without shoving it down the throats of those who disagree with you. Also, it is considered pedophilic to ship children in any way, no matter what month it is or who you are. Though it's obviously not punishable by law, just know that you've taken part in a pedophilic action (especially since they are confirmed not to be gay). Let that settle in for a minute.

I actually like how simple the movie is. I still like the Pixar films where the characters go on some sort of quest grand quest, but what slightly lowered my enjoyment of those films like, for example, Coco, is the plot contrivances. Like, they need to space out these emotional beats around the movie, so to do that they just place roadblocks around so it doesn't fly by. First Ernesto is supposed to be at a rehearsals, but he isn't. Hector doesn't have any special access to the backstage of the performance, so to reunite Miguel with Ernesto, they need to go to a music competition. But they don't have a guitar. So they head over to a dude who does have one, Chicharron. But he doesn't give it to them right away, so Hector plays him a song. They then head back to the show, but as Miguel seems to be winning, his family shows up right then and there and Hector finds out he was being lied to. Miguel then runs away, but he can't enter into the big party Ernesto is running, so he has to ask for a favor from the actual winners of the competition. I could go on for a little bit, but I think you get it. Luca on the other hand, doesn't really have that issue. It feels very slice-of-lifey, and the story flows pretty naturally. Pixar hasn't ever really done a simple, fun movie, and I like that Luca is just that. Makes the movie more special imo.

This Pixar movie was a good time! A simple, charming, slice-of-life story about a sea creature with the ability to turn into human form when he gets dry! Doesn't try to be anything other than that and does a real good job at it... and without too many contrivances like some other movies like Inside Out, Coco and Soul (as great as those movies are) tend to have at times! It may not reach the heights of those Pixar flicks, but still great fun! And it's been released for free on Disney+, so be glad about that!
