I'm binging all your videos to learn how to make proper sprites, animations and backgrounds for my game. The bar is very high but you are so on point and slowly explaining everything in detail that I'm sure I'll be able to overcome my fear of making pixel art and make my first sprite-sheets before the end of the year. Also, you give a lot of motivation with your personality and love for pixel art, and that's also a plus 👍

I just recently decided to learn pixel art so I can make my own art for my game, and your channel is my #1 go-to for learning pixel art. I could seriously watch your tile set tutorials forever. I would love to see more like this, maybe with tips for other types of tile styles and shapes, ie. industrial, desert, sci-fi, etc. I learn best with someone explaining what techniques look best and why for different scenarios, which you excel at. Keep up the great work!

I've been getting really into pixel art (and hopefully game design) recently, so seeing tutorials and other videos like these really help. Ive always loved games that had level editors, like Portal 2 and Stealth Inc (1 & 2). Plus Minecraft since it's well...Minecraft. The first main experience I had with tilemaps was the PC version of Stealth Inc, since the editor has a separate menu for background tiles. Which has them displayed as a full screen of tiles to pick from (or highlight multiple).

As a side-note, a lot of those rigid, polygonal elements in the first Sonic game (like the trees) were based on the sorts of 3D renders that were popular at the time in graphic design.

@AdamCYounis Hi, Adam, I understood the point in this vid and I've got same result. And this level of pixel art feels like a beginner level. But now I watch at your tileset in Insignia game and its MUCH better and looks like next level. Do you planing any vids how to make tilesets like yours? About what rules need to know to do large and detailed tilesets. How to make it feel like rly natural grass, I mean BIG grass with big leaves.

Hey hey! Can this sprite tile making logic work also when my videogame has 32x32 tiles, but I assemble the tiles from 16x16? Like i make a tileset with smaller pieces and can mix and match and build it like lego? Would such also work in a videogame programs or tiles have to be 32x32? Or can sprite sizes vary between sizes in a single game? I like the aesthetic in games with the black in the middle version and the tops and sides are lit

Hello there ! Very nice set or videos for someone starting his own project. I wanted to ask your opinion regarding the size ratio between character/tile. Because I see a lot of 16 wide char and 8pixel tiles (Celeste I believe, Donkey Kong 94) for platformer /puzzle platformer games. I am sure there are gameplay and style aspect that may justify these choices and that trial and error is ultimately the way to nail the feeling you are looking for but I would like to hear your take on how can it impacts gameplay but also perception of information within the scene.
@Coffe789

One advantage of tilesets is that the grid they provide gives the player a good metric of distance. After playing for a while you might subconsciously understand that you can jump 4 tiles high, and 8 tiles wide at max speed or whatever. Whether you can make a jump never comes down to measuring the pixels, which might be the case in a non-tiled 3D game. Generally all this means is that the tiles are on the same scale as the player's movement, if your player can jump 15 tiles high (and not quite 16) that is harder to subconsciously gauge (than like 4 tiles vs 5 tiles) and you are losing one benefit of tilesets. Regarding gameplay I don't think the choice *really* matters as long as the scale isn't unreasonably skewed. Pretty much the smaller your tiles are, the more complex your geometry can be. In a minimalist puzzle game you might want your puzzles to be more simple, hence a smaller grid, hence bigger tiles. In a game like celeste, tiles are critical to your movement, and being able to have a large variety in shapes gives the level designers more control.

So, I'm very new to pixel art and this may be a dumb question, but how do you, like, know what a tile is? Like, when you say "this platform is x tiles wide" what is considered a tile?

When you design these tilesets, do you come up with a style frame before you build the tilesets and base the style of the tilesets off that or do you do tileset studies and build your style frame off those tiles? Im trying to come up with a style frame and finding it very difficult to not paint every single pixel, and its taking longer than expected... though I have little exp in pixel art. Still new, im finding it difficult vs standard his res illustration, for me its way more thinking involved but Im sure that's based on lack of exp.

Hey Adam, very nice video, I was wondering how you have set up Aseprite to edit more than one tile at a time. I have tried making a seamless tile set a few times with zero luck in photoshop so I got this software but not sure how to draw on more than one grid square at a time. thanks.

This feature is limited currently to the 1.3 beta, available if you select the beta release from the app preferences in the steam version. With this version, there are 3 tile modes which become accessible when you create / convert a standard layer into a "tilemap" layer. Once there, you can edit multiple tiles in mode 1 "manual", which you access with the shortcut "space + 1". In this mode, no new tiles will be created, so if you want to make new ones it's best to switch over to mode 2.

Consider doing the videos in smaller chunks it's overwhelming, I know it's good content, still not sure if going to watch it just knowing how much time would take.
