I came to this channel by searching pixel art tutorials (I've never done pixel art, only vector art and illustrations but pixel art looks so cool) and at the beginning of this vid, heard you say "I only have 400 or so subscribers".. yeah it's close to 1000 now but for a channel this quality I feel you deserve way more subs. thought I should mention a alternative to aseprite that has some of the same functionality called libresprite as it is a fork of aseprite. libresprite made when aseprite under one of the gnu general public licenses in other words when aseprite was able to have programs based off of the original program

ms paint is actually pretty good, although limited. But its easy to learn and very light. It spans open in any computer and you can kinda cheat layers on it opening multiple stances of it.

Pyxel Edit sounds like an amazing program as i primarily work with tilesets and that instant apply on the entire scene that uses those tiles is a dream come true!

I’m broke & only have my iPad, so I’m using Pixel Studio. It has a decent amount of features for a free app (there’s also a pro version for $7.99), and it has tutorials in the app to make it easier.

I heavily researched between Pixelmash and Pyxeledit. Pixelmash won, it's my first pixel art - centric tool. It has it's own strength above the rest: animation. But God, i hate doing anything else in Pixelmash. I do all the drawing in Aseprite. Then import it's output to Pixelmash for animation.

If you have a bit of computer know-how, you can compile Aseprite yourself for free! There are plenty of resources on how to do this online.

Great video! If I'm making a larger player character (24 or 32 pixels tall), do I use larger tiles, or do I just let them occupy more tiles?

up to you. I prefer to just let them occupy more tiles. That way you can have more detail in the world. Im doing that for my newest game The Last Phoenix. World tiles are 16x16 but the character is larger.

oh dang, so that's why it was doing that. I didn't know snapping was a thing. and i was getting a lil annoyed on another project I was working on haha. I love photoshop. But I feel like it has "too much stuff" for pixel art. Definitely prefer something lighter like pyxel edit.

Since you have a 1/25,000 chance of getting a key, I recommend either buying it or find a $20 bill (or an equivalent in another country) on the ground so you technically don't lose money

At Ringling College of Art & Design, they offer a Pixel Art course. I thought it was a joke. It’s not. I’d rather watch this - it’s more fun, less time consuming, and leaves room for me to figure stuff out for myself. Oh, and I’m not spending ~40,000 USD to learn how to make pictures with little squares.

If you're a little familiar with building source code, Aseprite's EULA allows building and using it commercially but NO redistribution. Hi Pete! Do any of those programs with tileset features have different tilesetvariants as well? Like isometric or hexagonal(+tilted)? Actually I have no idea if GODOT or Unity even support implementing those kinds but you never know if you don't know!

Unity supports Isometric grids but I dont think any of the pixel art programs do. However you can use the existing grid to help you regardless.
