It' really nice to have these games, the presentation of the physical copies is amazing and some of them are really good, but to be true PixelHeart's ports to Dreamcast are sometimes sloppy. Vertical stretching is expected when translating 16:9 to 4:3, but there's not excuse to the pixel shimmering and gittering, and the graphical artifacts some games show. That's because resolution wasn't properly adjusted. It's pretty noticeable on Satazius and Wolflame, and should have been commented. Those graphical artifacts on Vulkaiser aren't present on the original game at all. Many of this ports are also locked to 30fps instead the 60fps of the OG PC, something that hurts shmups quite a bit, since you require flawless timing and responsive controls (his has to make the Wolflame port more difficult than the game actually is on PC, where it's a mean game already). I like these ports are made, just thought we have to talk about this issues, otherwise some people may feel really disappointed when their games arrive, because some ports are a graphical mess.

Tough Guy was originally a DOS game, you can even turn on zoom in/out mode just like "Art of Fighting"... You can do the health recharge as well by pressing multiple buttons at once (forgot which buttons), it will as well charge up your energy bar which let you use the super attack when the bar is full, the life recharge is limited for both the player and CPU, it will get slower and slower and will use up at a point. It was quite good back in the day of DOS games.

"you're not going to get anything nearing the excellence of the original library, of course". Mostly true, but there are definitely a handful of Dreamcast indie games that are up there in quality with some of the best official releases, or at least close, especially some of the earlier ones from the late 00s and early 10s. Sturmwind is a good example, and that one even LOOKS like it could've been released during the Dreamcast's commercial lifespan. For more recent ones, Intrepid Izzy and FX Unit Yuki have had some really positive reviews.

As cool as (some) of these games look; it's very hard for me to believe that these games are anything but quick and dirty port jobs. Every one of these 6 games that you showed off have UI elements or other graphics that would be nearly impossible to see on CRTs any lower quality than a PVM. Vulkaiser in particular even has graphics that just look corrupted because of the downscaling. (It looks like it was made for 800x600 and then simply squished to fit into Dreamcast's 640x480.) If you're a game company that's putting stuff out for Dreamcast nowadays, you need to be faced with the idea that your games aren't always going to be played on PVMs or VGA monitors and that a decent majority of your games will be played on mid-range CRTs that will just destroy your pixel-width fonts and UI elements. If you're porting a game, you need to account for the mid-tier and not just the top of the line enthusiast- and that's not just true for Dreamcast but gaming in general. This is why games like Dead Rising for Xbox 360 were nigh-unreadable when they came out, as CRTs couldn't handle the tiny fonts. Anyway! Thanks for the awesome video SLX! I really enjoyed this look at these games!

PixelHeart sure has some amazing titles. One you should check out is FX Unit Yuki The Henshin Engine. It's a 16-bit action plattformer that is clearly a loveletter to the PC engine. In adition to the plattforming levels there are also SHMUP stages. Every stage is themed after a famous PC Engine title like Shockman, Castlevania Rondo of Blood, Bonk and Cotton. These are all parodys of course so the names are all slightly changed. Yes there is some slightly weeb stuff attached to it giving that you play as the personafied PC Enginge and your rival is a "true" 16bit girl named Geni. Yes you can guess where this is going. The game doesn't push the dreamcast to its limits but it's alot of fun. There are also versions for the Mega Drive and PC Engine CD but those are always quickly sold out whenever stock is available so the dreamcast should be a safe option.

@elbitxo5945
Жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with manufacturing, it's just impossible to port any of these games (even the simple looking Alice Sisters) to the MegaDrive since the system lacks the power by far. Those are PC games made without any of the MegaDrive architecture, memory and space limitations on mind. Some of these games use polygons also, and a system that old isn't able to run even a single frame of textured polygons. It's "easy" to port a PC game to Dreamcast since it uses a much more modern architecture, C programming language, has KallistiOS, a great operating system really well documented and friendly to developers, and is even able to run Windows CE and uses DirectX. The system is also powerful enough to run all these kind of games without much issues. Those two consoles may have been separated by just a decade, but the Dreamcast is a modern computer compared to the MegaDrive, the technology leap in video games between late 80s and late 90s is huge. The MegaDrive uses assembly 68000 language, way less friendly to modern programming, and even if its CPU is well documented, C is being implemented and we are getting many amazing homebrew games, they are specifically made for the MegaDrive, always with the huge system limitations on mind.

This has got to be the most positive I've ever heard someone talk about JoshProd/PixelHeart Dreamcast releases. I wish you went into the performance more, because JoshProd is notorious for poor DC port jobs. And you mentioned it once but, with the exception of Alice Sisters, these are old games. Like, 20-25 years old. And each is sold for around $40USD. EACH. When they go on sale on Steam, they're about $2. Obviously these releases have their audience, but it's JoshProd trying to squeeze DC fans of all they can yet again.

@@SegaLordX while I don't disagree, full fledged games like Intrepid Izzy, built for the system, retail for less. JoshProd entered the DC space to make quick cash-ins with low effort (with few exceptions like Flashback's quality, and Volgarr's price which is $20) by way of cheap licensing. It's their MO. I'll give them this: their packaging has always been stellar, but their programming is typically poor on purpose because they don't take the time or money to do most ports properly. It started from their first releases, and despite concern from the community, they continue to operate that way. If their releases led to better and better releases, OK, but it hasn't.
@SegaLordX

I had no problems with any of these games sans Tough Guys as far as performance. The indie scene on a dead platform is a thankless task, and for them to offer anything is more than you can say for most developers and publishers. You say they are in it for a quick cash in, but these runs are small batch and take years to sell. I can't imagine there is any real money in this whatsoever. I look at games like this as either a blessing for those still wanting games for a platform they love, or a nonfactor as they already had access to them elsewhere. I don't see how this hurts anyone.

Incredibly, some of the comments here comparing these releases to commercial retail games back when the Dreamcast was alive. Let's all take stock of the fact that you simply cannot use the Katana SDK available to developers back then as a licence from Sega would be required (and refused no doubt) or legal action would be taken, hell, both JoshProd and Wave don't use the correct box art for Euro DC games anymore due to fear of reprisal. The KallistOS and such like has been around for many years, not really allowing for the machine's full graphical library to be exploited, hence why we see performance issues and graphical fidelity far under what the DC can do. I get that many people feel exploited being a fan of the Dreamcast with JoshProd's output but there are some solid games that they put out, as does Wave Game Studios. Sure, the price on some of them is high, but we don't have to buy them all. On the up side, I believe game engines are being worked on that allow for the Dreamcast's power to be used more effectively, but all this work requires foundations to be laid by the game buying Dreamcast community in the current day to warrant the work versus interest. Exciting times are ahead, we just need to show the support for projects, hopefully all of us here find something that interests us out of the post death releases for the console.

I don’t get the purpose of this. Makes sense if it’s on a modern console or pc for that retro kick. For consoles like this you want something specific to the system, something that gives nostalgia for the console, so something that has powerstone or crazy taxi vibes, or a spiritual successor to jet set radio. These games look like something an Amiga CD32 would have on it. Nothing against the games them selves, they are PC games of the era. But this looks like a cash grab on nostalgia strings, rather than a genuine effort for something. The mega drive new releases people put out really push the mega drive why they are interesting. These releases aren’t that.

I honestly believe its not even worth covering these old games. The Dreamcast was capable of so much more than 16 bit shooter ports that run 2mhz faster. We should have had a bustling mod scene for Jet Grind Radio or Sonic Adventure but really only the obscure stuff gets modded like DC Half-Life. I get way more excited when a new (old) cancelled 3D Dreamcast release gets revealed than any indie game announcement.

The games all feel rather over-derivative or lacking in spark if I'm completely honest, especially when you consider the platform they are on. Frankly indie development for old consoles leaves me cold, there's a kernel of brilliance there but most of it would have been underwhelming for the consoles heyday. But I guess that's how it always been with games! :D
