There's two types of music: the type which is interesting the first time you listen to it, and from there on you just kinda lose interest until you forget the song exists. That's pretty much the mainstream pop music today. Then there's bands and artists like Pixies, bands you need to work on, be patient about and give them time. But you never get bored with them - and that's what makes them special.

Imagine if Radiohead stuck to their "roots" of "Pablo Honey" and "The Bends" and never experimented with albums such as "Ok Computer" or "Kid A", they wouldnt be the band they are today. Sometimes change is good. Although I absolutely love the EP "Come on Pilgrim" (and the rest of their albums for that matter), I find it fantastic that they are making new albums and happy that they do not sound like old Pixies. Their new style suits their stage appearance much better, and I think it still sounds better than anything I hear at my local radio station. Long Live Pixies!

I for one am really happy to get some new music from the Pixies... much much much cooler than these guys playing the same shit from 25 years ago. Yup, Kim is gone and that sucks. So funny to read some (not many) calling this music awful (?????) How can anyone say such a thing. Awful is Foster the People, goddamn awful is anything by Robin Thicke. There may be degrees of how much I like or love a particular song but I can honestly say that they have never put out an awful song and this EP stands as a solid one. The Pixies are like Radiohead in that even their worst songs are better than most of what is out there in the public musical landscape.

You know, it's funny.... ...I became a Pixies fan just before EP1 came out, and Kim Deal left the band. I can't decide whether I should consider myself lucky to have become a fan right around the new release, or if I should be saddened that I never got to see the original Pixies with Kim Deal. In a few short months Pixies have now dominated my music library, and they've quickly become my favorite band on the face of the planet. But all the same, I wish it had happened sooner. I wish I could have seen them live, as they stood in their original lineup. If I had been just a little bit faster, I may have caught a glimpse of the greatness that was the original Pixies. Not that new Pixies aren't great, but it's not quite the same.

I saw them in 1992, and they were amazing. The best band of the past 50 years, easily. They were great with Kim, but I have always felt that it was Joey and Black Francis that made the band what it is. I've always liked Kim's band the Breeders, but they have never been as good as Pixies. And though I am sad to see that Kim is no longer in the band, I don't feel that it makes them less of a great band.

I'm so sick of everyone crying about Kim. She wrote nothing. Gigantic, the worst pixies song by far, and that's it. Listen to the last pixies album, trompe le monde. No Kim at all and it was the best Pixies album of them all. These songs would be exactly the same even if Kim was in the band. The change has to do with Frank getting older and changing. That's it. They are his songs as are all pixies songs.

Are you high? Deal sings along with "Little Eiffel," "Palace of the Brine," and every other song. If Deal weren't important, why are they touring with a Kim-clone? What would Velouria be without Deal? I'll tell you: Velouria would be a Frank Black song (and very few of us actually followed Frank Black's solo career; in fact, the number is so small that we FB fans know each other by name). Kim Deal is the reason Speedie Marie isn't considered a classic.

You sir are the one that is high. You're talking about background vocals. Background vocals. Frank could have gotten the same thing pretty much anywhere. And he's proving it by joking around and throwing different people in at bass and the music live not suffering one iota. I guess you're behind because "Kim-Clone" isn't in the band anymore. "Velouria would be a Frank Black song". You moron it IS a FB song. He wrote it!!! The lyrics. Every musical note of every instrument. Just because he let her sing background and in some harmonies doesn't mean she's intricate for the song.

kudo's for putting new stuff out. If after 25 listens (I'm hardly there yet) it doesn't stack up to their old work for me, it will not be the end of the world. In fact that would be expected. Breaking down musical barriers is usually for the young, not the middle aged. Few song writers grow more creative or better as they move into that stage of life. Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen types who continue to amaze into their 60's are the very rare exception rather than the rule.

If you think Frank Black's work is inferior to the Pixies, I don't know what to tell you. Time marches on, and you either end up with people repeating the same shit forever and ever (which is what the Pixies would have to do to please), or you end up with people actively working to take the old parts and reassemble them in new interesting ways. This is basically Frank, Joey, and Lovering getting back to jam out some of Frank's song ideas. It's neat. It doesn't have to be Surfa Rosa.

I've been a fan of all of Frank Black/Black Frances' work. Although the Frank Black stuff wasn't even close to what the Pixies made, I still found a few tracks on each CD that I truly loved. This is exactly that. A Frank Black album with The Pixies name slapped on it. If we're all being completely honest, I think it's obvious that this isn't what we were looking for in the new Pixies.

I dunno, seeing Here Comes Your Man every night for 6 months on MTV in 1989 sort of equates to mainstream recognition somehow. As did seeing them on Letterman in 1991. And touring with U2 in 1992. I guess I agree with some of what you said, but it's kind of predicated on some things that just aren't true. When it comes down to it, I just don't care what some 20 some year old thinks about what they think happened 25 years ago. Not saying that's you, but it seems like a lot of people here.

People were waiting to shoot em down as either a parody of themselves or a older wimped out version. They were never gonna win here,so Kim quit. Boo hoo, get over it. Even judging this without the Pixies name attached to it, it's awful. It sounds like something that would've come out in 1993 or 1994 and been forgotten. Sure it's no Surfer Rosa. I get that. I don't want them to try to remake 'Debaser' or the like. They're trying some different things and I respect that: Black Francis has long since become Frank Black. But anyone who thinks this deserves to stand up with the 4 Pixies albums or their worst b-sides is deluding themselves.

This EP is some catchy, slightly quirky alt rock that no one would have even acknowledged, had it not been for the Pixies name attached to it id give this EP would get a 4.0 if it was any other band besides the Pixies. What left a bad taste in Pitchfork's mouth was how much of a disappointment this is in comparison to their first two records. The 1.0 is a bit harsh, but it's in the right ballpark, being that this latest incarnation of Pixies isn't anything special compared to the old Pixies.

Subliminally, little did I realize I was listening to a phenomenon that hit me in the back of the head 3 weeks later and stuck there ever since. Teenager of the Year did the same to me. I came looking for this after reading yet another unintelligible pitchfork review. They gave it the lowest rating possible. I couldn't say I know much of the pixies work, but as far as any kind of music they pass through pitchfork as being mediocre or great, this still fits into anything they pass. My first comment is that I compulsively listened to it like six times in a row. I'll need to step back from it for a bit before I have a full opinion on it. But at first blush I think its awesome. Toe in the Ocean is one of the catchiest, hookiest, songs I've heard in a long time. Has a Brian Wilson feel to it. Indie City has a spacy, estoteric, feel to it - an FB/Pixies trademark. Boom is a Pixies circa 1990 tune. I don't care whether it sounds like FB, Pixies, or GD. It's great.
@studig

Bagboy has that weird angular Pixies thang. Andro Queen is deffo got a Grand Duchy feel and Another Toe is very FB solo career, but has a great feel in the chorus. Indie Cindy is pretty good for me with a Subbacultcha vibe. What Goes Boom is head and shoulders for me the best track here. Just my opinion. Got a bit of a Trompe feel, namely Jefrey with 1 F. Just think it transcends live and blends into their material in that situation.

Anyone who thinks this album is a misstep is being silly. Not only did the Pixies start making music decades ago, Frank Black has to be one of the most prolific song writers out their. It is ridiculous to think that they would still be doing the exact same thing that they were doing way back when. And in truth they ARE doing the exact same thing they have always done, which is evolve. No pixies album was ever like the one before it. EVERY PIXIES ALBUM EVER HAS BEEN A MISSTEP.

Kind of amazing all of the disappointment and nastiness there was in the response when this first dropped. I mean yeah, there are some poppier aspects and forays in new directions(Andro Queen sounds like a lost dream pop tune a la Jesus and Mary Chain) but there's so much great classic Pixies here, especially in the guitars as the ep progresses. Only criticism I have is that Frank seems to have lost a top gear - understandable after 20 years but still a bummer. Sure, the writing sometimes veers into cheap, but that was always a risk with the Pixies and one that could be totally transformed in the presentation. If Indie Cindy had been given the old-time Black Francis unhinged delivery, it'd have been received as a new classic. In the end, it ain't Doolittle, but it's still pretty frickin great.

It's really just Black Francis that's the genius. They clearly aren't Pixies without Kim, but Frank can still make music. I think he should have just released this under either just himself or under a new band called Pixies w/o Kim Deal.

Andro Queen: too much soft rock with some Johnny Marr (The Smiths) guitar effect. Another Toe In The Ocean: Boring. Indie Cindy: Sounds a bit like we like of Pixies. What Goes Boom: Best track. Ill buy it as a single. Bottom line: 4/10

Great to know Pixies are making new material - being happy for that reason alone, although to me mainly the first one and the last one sound kind of "pixieously" to my ears...and the 1st song sound like Pixies met The Edge from U2, which is great I guess :-D

I think this is one of the best Pixies projects ever.... It's always been about Charles (Frank) (Black). And still is to this day....

I heard this was out but hadnt stumbled on it until now. It sucks that kims gone, and they're music style has changed. That being said...still love em and cant wait to listen to the full album or perhaps part 2 of they're EP

Mainstream success is irrelevant. In fact, it sounds like the pixies are trying too hard to achieve mainstream success. Even big fans of underground music have been dismissing this ep for it's boring nature.

Why would you want it to be the same band? Bands should evolve.... They are never gonna sound as fast and heavy as they did in their youth..... I am glad Frank is moving forward. Kim works better in her own band anyway.

Why? For being right? This EP is bollocks. For anyone who appreciated the perfection of their original output this EP seems like a cruel joke. No wonder Kim Deal left. I'd be embarrassed to put my name to this too.

A 1/10 can only reflect the level of excitement after expecting a 10/10. I mean, whatever Bieber puts out is 1/10. New Pixies EP, no matter how much one is disappointed, on a par with Bieber? You'd have to be fucking mad.

Love it. It's very different but it's just been so long! I think it sounds like The Pixies, the drumming and lead guitar help rebuild the sound Frank Black didn't achieve (not that he wanted to) with his solo stuff.

I'm still up in the air about this new stuff. Bagboy is great, but I'm still undecided about this EP. Also, people saying this pisses over everything that's current clearly haven't been listening to the right things....

For me Andro Queen is very FB/BF solo career. Another Toe yields a bit more as does Indie Cindy. What goes Boom is my personal fav here and perhaps represents a trompe le monde sound. Kims come and Kims go. Its devolution man !

Honestly, the only problems I see with this EP are that the production muffles most of the louder moments making it less heavy than it should be, and that the choruses don't really provide a proper payoff for the buildups that lead to them. Otherwise, this is pretty good.

Andro Queen now Andro Queen has lost her ring I think it used to sit right here encrusted in blue and hard and true for now I will kiss her finger have you ever seen Andro Queen wandering all for her ruby? one day she'll come in through my window yes, she gave me her own true pledge

Chris Morris' MotherBanger Pixies parody was better than this. It's Pixies, so I'll listen to it a few more times, but I don't think it's going to grow on me like old Pixies. Shame really.

Absolutely awful. If it wasn't The Pixies I'd give this ep 2, but it is The Pixies so I'll give it 1. Damn, what a shame. I guess Kim saw this coming and that's why she's not in the band anymore...

Any genuine Pixies fan should know better than to judge new material on a first or even second listen. I really didn't like Bagboy at first, but now I love it. I think that is a mark of a great band.

Hey, Mr. Black's voice is back, specifically on the second track. I thought it was gone forever as soon as I heard his recording of Where is my Mind with his Catholics. This revelation encourages me to purchase this record.

who gives a fuck if it's not the crazy abrasive sounding band that they were, the songs still have a fun energy about them even if they do sound a bit polished. plus the art work rocks

well.... at least we got one song out of the deal.... Andro Queen was good because they weren't trying to recapture their old sound which can be a fairly treacherous road to travel....

Just for trivial sake, whether accurate or not, for Andro see Ana, for Another Toe see Blown Away, for Indie Cindy see Subbacultcha, for What Goes Boom see Jefrey with one F...Jefrey :P

Worst Pixies release yet, but that's to be expected with their long hiatus from making music. My main problem is the singing. Black Francis just isn't as good as he used to be.

Andro Queen would sit nicely with Grand Duchy. Another toe with FB, but the last 2 songs are fairly much a Trompe le Monde sound. Jefrey with 1 F comes to mind at times on What Goes Boom.

i love Pixies but IMO, this release is a misstep. they went from having a distinct sound that was obnoxious and beautiful to being the sonic equivalent of generic-brand vanilla ice cream.

The dynamics of these songs are really different from their earlier albums. I'm guessing it's because they've gotten older and that Kim Deal left. However though, I'm really liking the last song a lot, it catches the essence of what the Pixies were known for.

are great also imo. all opinion my friend. you reviewers need to learn that and start putting "imo", instead of making statements like your opinion is fact and matters more. plus you all make your mind up way too early

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so please stop calling each other stupid and telling each other that there wrong. I for one don't think this album is as good as their other ones but thats me. Its not the change they made, I like the change, I believe in order for a band who cares about the music to survive is to change and whether its a good or bad change it doesn't matter. If you like this album thats your right and no one should tell you other wise. Like my old english teacher would say "music is like pizza toppings, not everyone likes the same type of toppings." The only song I don't like on this album is Andro Queen. All the other songs are great.

Strange how i didnt like any of the pixies stuff. After two or three listens now their songs are staples in my life. I think its key to remember that they invented this sound

My favourite band!! Maybe lots of people says that Pixies are not Pixies without Kim Deal, but with this EP we can see that Pixies are a genius with or without Kim.
