The Planet was the predecessor of every steam locomotive ever built. Front cylinders. Tubular boiler with blast pipe. The Rocket was an experiment while the Planet was the real success.

I'm curious to know what those two moving levers to the left are called I've seen them before on locomotives like the John Bull and the Bestfriend of Charleston I know they connect to the rods in some way but what are they used for?
@Lozzy100

These are the gear levers attached to the slide valves above the pistons. By adjusting the gears you can adjust the steam entering the pistons.

yes, it used to extend to the colliery sidings until 1993, but the connection was removed so the tramway could be placed in its place, steam originally finished in 1994 at beamish and revived in 2006

The Planet, is awesome 👍🏼. First, when it starts up, it makes a loud puffing noise. Until 1:11, when the driver turns the main handle, it go quite, and only the pure clickity sounds and wheels turning are heard, isn't Planet just as amazingly quiet as Stephenson's Rocket. Maybe it and The Rocket can do jobs carrying animals because they Compared to most bigger diesel and steam locomotive are less likely to disturb animals.
@edwinsalisbury83
Жыл бұрын
That’s because that’s the regulator which controls the steam into the cylinders. He’s slowing the engine down as engines built in the 1830s don’t have brakes. The train is moving only by inertia.
