The internet was a double-edged sword for the Lindy Hop - it helped connect communities of dancers who had developed their own takes on the Lindy Hop in isolation. But it also seeded conformity where before stood individual creativity. In this TEDx talk, choreographer and dancer Ryan Francois tells the tale of the Harlem dance style that conquered the world.
Francois is a foremost authority in the United States and United Kingdom on all authentic jazz dance styles associated with the 1920s, 30s and 40s -- especially the Lindy Hop. He and his choreography have appeared in many different media. On television, he has worked on 'So You Think You Can Dance', 'Dancing With The Stars', 'Britain's Got Talent', 'Strictly Dance Fever' and, most notably, on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
