Its definitely the unique tonal qualities of intentional dissonance... to the point of confusing me. "Oh there are notes there?". Far enough from the path without being random nonsense.

@@dolinofolde That's a really good summary of Allan. I mean sometimes he drops pentatonic stuff in. He mostly chooses notes that are totally unexpected but yet never venturing to the point of alienation.

This thing is 17 years old now? That Holdsworth solo still sticks out as what the shred scene just simply doesn't get or something. It's one of the best solos in the style of music I've heard.

I remember listening to Dream Theater’s Trial of Tears solo and thinking how much inspiration it took from Holdsworth. And later Derek does this with Holdsworth, mixing that Prog metal sound with Allan’s incredible improvisation. So glad this collaboration exists!

quite the contrary ( excluding holdsworth) i think virgil did create a DT cover band in the 90s as indicated by petrucci in the audition video . but PlanetX remains the benchmark for technical abilities and also on the melodic side too . Moonbabies and quantum are masterpieces . Mangini also included quantum in his top albums .
