what is a little funny to me is that when you are packing for a move a common piece of advice is to first pack all the things you can live without for months. That way you can start slowly and not feel rushed..... but! now it seems like if you have a bunch of boxes you "can live without" maybe those are the things that should be decluttered? haha, maybe not, but it is at least worth some consideration. :)

so true!! you may still be able to find some things -- like seasonal items if you happen to have any--we have a single box of Christmas decorations...and we'd probably have a box or two of summer clothes. But still, that's a great reminder that this common advice may NOT actually be the most useful ;) -- or at the very least try and be very decluttering and intentional while doing so :)

Wardrobe boxes are wonderful because taking clothes is very difficult. We saved ours for three moves. They don’t hold much. My husband and I moved 14 times. We started with the smallest uhaul and as we added 3 kids, three cats, three dogs and a horse each move took more and bigger. I had huge garage sales before each move. On our last move to a garage apartment behind his 92 year old mom and after I had become addicted to decluttering it was a piece of cake. Of course the kids and their stuff, two cats, two dogs and the horse were long gone which helped immensely. I don’t want my kids to have to get rid of a hoard of stuff when we are gone. I also hate trying to find clean boxes to pack in. Seems like money well spent.

That is such a great idea, especially with kids! When we moved from HI to the mainland we limited our family to 1 U-Haul pod and if we couldn't fit it, we didn't take it. My kids got to take 1 suitcase each. If you limit yourself it is pretty interesting how things get prioritized. We did end up with some regrets of not bringing a few things, but we just kept a mentality of "just pretend it was lost in a fire."

My husband and I will at some point in the future be moving. Most likely we are going to be going across country or at least a few states away. And our goal in every day life today is to lessen the amount of items that we own. The goal is that when we get ready to leave everything that we own goes in a suitcase each for clothing and a few boxes in the back of the car and that’s it. I must admit that since I started watching your videos I am learning so much more about how I am an emotional Collector. Your techniques have helped me a lot. So thank you very much. I am planning to moving in three months. I still don't have a new apartment or house, but wanted to begin decluttering early, which is how I found you. Since I still have time, I'm starting with a visible space every day and attempting to keep up with them, but also attacking at least one "hidden" area every day, too. I'm doing pretty well with this, but am working on papers now, and it is hard! I am into a filing cabinet with stuff I have kept for decades. I’ve never even thought about using the container concept as it pertains to the “normal” or “recommended amount of boxes” for a given house size! 🤯 We moved ourselves a few years ago and it was a disaster. We had way more stuff than we imagined! We had to rent a 2nd Uhaul and then pay to fly back to get it to drive back to our new location. I wish I had learned your de-cluttering tricks back then! I still struggle with keeping too much stuff, But hopefully I will be more prepared next time we move!

I can relate, Bonnie. We moved in 2008, after being in the same house since 1976. We moved EVERYTHING with us because we had never moved and we had 2 weeks and a houseful of stuff. I finally started going through stuff and decluttering a year ago. I went through one box that had things dated 1979! Most of it went into the trash. My storage unit “Container” is improving. It started when I got a bigger storage space And Didn’t Fill It. #1 There are whole shelves empty, with clean empty boxes available to help remove more things. #2 At garage sales I got some free or cheap rolling luggage. I use each suitcase to carry things back and forth between using and storing. Summer clothes and Winter clothes share the same suitcase, back and forth between my closet and storage. #3 I do a lot of crafts, so: resin suitcase, paper crafting, jewelry making, greeting cards, knitting, etc. Each one lives in a rolling suitcase. If I’m using it right now, it’s at home; if not, the whole suitcase goes back to storage. This gives me visual space at home to help me keep decluttering. [Still a way to go, but I keep at it. I’ve had 4 TBIs (head injuries), so my ability to create clutter is pretty stressful.] #4 I was able to donate a whole big suitcase of knitting supplies, tools, and books to a women’s crafting collective in Mexico, when I decided to do one less thing. Because it was in a suitcase, someone going to Mexico was able to take it for free, no shipping cost, ready to go. #5 Lately I’ve been thinking about the Afghani women refugees in the US. Could I get them a suitcase of fabric for their handcrafts, to make them feel welcome, and see if some of their handcrafts could help them earn money while they get started, or longer? Seriously, I even have a big pouch of many types and multiples of hand-sewing needles. I don’t even sew on buttons by hand. 🤣 #6 Like for the Mexican women and the Afghani women, I like to look for ways I can give away things in an organized way, help people get some good out of it. I thought I’d make some phone calls (Red Cross, State Department, etc) once I have a suitcase ready to go. #7 My work is handmade, so it takes room for tools and supplies, not like someone who just needs a computer, a phone, and a desk. The storage unit and the rolling suitcases really help me have mental and physical space. It is more relaxing to not have every possible project calling out to me like the Sirens, Day and Night. 🤣 #8 I’ve been working on this process for about 3 years, that’s how I made more room in the storage space to make room at home. I used the extra space to sort and organize, both stored stuff and stuff from home. The empty shelves at waist level help me to get less! Keep less! (P.S. I am the family archivist and soon that will get a revamping, thanks to you.) #9 But I literally have almost no overlap between what I knew how to do, and your system. It is such a Godsend! You are the one they mean when they say, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” I am especially glad that I’m learning how to make a visible difference, and make better choices. Most of what you teach is squarely in my blindspots. 🙏 #10 Also, watching your container home move, I can see that someday I might not need a storage unit. I’m looking forward to that. Now I can hardly wait to see the next videos in this series about your container home move ☺️🕊👌

Interesting idea and video series. I'm glad you decided to still put out the video even though it's 3 months old now. A few questions came up though. How did you decide how many boxes to give each person? Did the boys get a regular box to make up for the fact that they're sharing a clothing box? How did the furniture factor into this? I'm very curious about this and looking forward to more videos in this series.

Hi Dana! I love your videos! I wish I had started watching them a long time ago, I was way to overwhelmed and didn’t have enough time to do what should have been done. We moved almost a month ago from a 2100 sq ft single story house to a 1300 sq ft up stairs apartment. We had lived in the house 7 years and didn’t realize the extent of the clutter we had accumulated. My in-laws lived with us until they passed so we had a lot of their stuff that my husband was not able to part with. His mom had a high clutter threshold (my husband takes after his mom). It took a 26 ft truck and a 15 ft truck to move everything out. Now besides our apartment we have a single car garage and a storage unit to hold all our stuff. We were exhausted and not able to get book cases and other things up stairs before returning the trucks (should have hired helpers) so in the garage/storage unit things were put (not decluttered or organized). Then we got sick and for a couple of weeks? We could not do much just the minimum to make our new place tolerable. We are now recovering and hoping to bring up most of the book cases and some of the stuff that goes on them this weekend. Over the next month I am planning to declutter the rest of the garage and storage so that everything will fit in the garage. What videos do you recommend I watch first for decluttering wisdom, inspiration and motivation? Is there a playlist? We are probably moving again in 6 months (long story) and I intended to be prepared next time. We can’t have another move like this one ever again. Thank you for your insights and help.

Also watch the one hour better ones (the garage one, the bedroom one) are helpful and along the same lines). Now that I've learned about this thing called decluttering, I am finally dealing with all of those boxes that got moved, but never unpacked, 13 years ago. And I'm not stopping until my house is move-ready. Even if we never move again, I want our home to eventually have only what we really need and love in it. Good luck to you! Even if I'd had time to go through things more thoroughly, I would have still brought too much. I did get rid of a lot, but it would have been more if I'd understood clutter and letting go like I do now. Hubby "likes stuff" so I won't get ours as minimal as I'd like, but I'm focusing on my stuff and working around his. Better is better! Right? I posted a video of one box I found in our garage. Based on the contents, it was from 1979! Most of it went in the trash. I think I did what I call a dash-n-stash...threw a bunch of stuff in a box to do an 'emergency' tidy, stashed it in the attic, and never got around to dealing with it...well, 42 years later. But who's counting. 😂😂😂 Meanwhile, that box of trash got moved with us. And it wasn't the only one. 😕😱 Now, I'm clearing out the excess and finally dealing with that old trash and junk too. 😄 I have a ways to go yet, but I've made a lot of progress over the past year. Thank you 🙏🏻. Luckily I’m in the uk and the council have a duty to help us, but it’s still scary. I have 4 kids, some autistic, I have mobility it issues, it’s a very stressful time. I appreciate your thoughts x

Love it Dana! Looking forward to learning more about your process. Still need to record my last video of the minimalism challenge I did in January. Not sure how big of a truck I would need to move, but it is way smaller than when I was first introduced to you a year ago.....

Been working on decluttering in prep for move, another great tool for me to use. Cannot convince hubby to buy boxes, but will try to figure out how many boxes we SHOULD have for our new house and eliminate some that we have here (2 people in a 4 bedrooms in about 2400 sf going to 3 bedroom 1700 sf, but don't want that house to be a FOC as this one is. Getting too old to handle stuff.

Our last move was 2 years before I found you, but I bought small boxes because they kept me from weighing them down to the point they weren't liftable. The house was also more than 3x the size but I still wish I would have understood the container concept before I got started here.

Thanks so much for sharing a moving video. I’ve watched so many of yours and you really speak my language. I’m moving in with my daughter and 30 yr old grandson in April from a 1 bedroom apartment and overstuffed 10 x 20 storage unit, so I have a whole lot of decluttering to do obviously. I did spend money on boxes too and that helps a lot. Any recommendations for which of your books would be most helpful for me with this move? Love your videos, keep it up!

The house you just moved out of was itself the "container" to compare to the new house, since the new house is larger.. Everyone has different stuff for a 3-4-bedroom house -- some have more books or pottery, or some people have more furniture. Idk how U-Haul would decide how much would be the standard. However, you yourself already know what you own and how it fits, so that would seem to be a better baseline, IMO. Hope the move went well.

Not moving, but when decluttering, I ask myself would I want to take the time and energy to pack it, move it, unpack it and find a new place for it. Is it that valuable to me?

IF I could get my family (especially Hubby) to work with me on decluttering my house I would love to approach it in a "moving" fashion... as in.... I have to pay a TON of money per pound to move my items... am I willing to pay to have this item moved???? If I would not be willing to pay for it... it doesn't stay. Sounded like a good plan anyway..... :/

We left to move to another state last year and rented two 28’ trailers then had to order another then on the other end we gave most away. So we paid to move stuff we gave away, we get the Super Stupid Award 🥇 🙈.

I moved from my own home when I got married and told my husband I never want to move again because of the stress. I still think we'll stay in our current house but now we have less stuff it seems more manageable.

I’m struggling with this. Our rental is about 2175. Our rent will be raised by an additional $800 June 1. We have decided to buy a home instead and I don’t want to take crap with me. My adult daughter moved out. My youngest gets are still in elementary school. I will be going back to work full time and I feel like if I couldn’t declutter when I was a SAHM, a mom when y kids went back to school or during COVID then I will not be able to declutter more when we move and I’m working full time. My biggest issue is with how much we need to save that I feel wasteful donating to others who will flip it but I also don’t have time to post and wait and sell either. We already did a garage sale. Since we haven’t committed to which new build we are buying I also have no idea how much room I will even have but I’m thinking closer to 1400 feet. I need help.

Have decided to declutter as I go and one thing I'm mixed about is this.. I have a bunch of those cloth boxes that fit in the cubes. My question is would it save "space" to pack things in the cubes/boxes and seal them up in the stands themselves or take every thing out of the boxes, fold them up and use other cardboard type boxes to move the contents?

Unless you have custom cubes made of solid wood rather than the MDF cubes sold in stores, you’d be better off packing the bins in boxes and moving the cubes empty. Likewise with any other furniture you may have made with MDF... It often has trouble moving in general, but especially with extra weight in it as it comes apart and bends easily.

What is in the package is a marketing trick, they deliberately under quote how many boxes you'll need so you'll have to buy more at an individual price. Better to look at what's in the 'package' and buy them elsewhere cheaper.
