Attempting a thru hike with a dog can be one of the most amazing or worst experiences depending on how prepared you are. Over the last few years I've been in both situations: a failed attempt of the Colorado Trail taught me that I needed to take a closer look at our gear and training, then a successful thru-hike of the San Luis Loop showed me that it can be fun as long as everyone is prepared.
Now that we are tackling a Continental Divide Trail Thru-Hike in 2021, I want to share how I am going about the pre-trip planning so that those who are new to the trail with their dogs can get a feel for what areas to really focus on.
I talk about vet care, foot care, food, gear, and logistics. Much of this information can be applied to the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, or any other long distance hike with some adjustments.
