Texas is a state of more than 25,000,000 people and at least 5 dialects. The "most" Texan accent doesn't actually exist. Those announcers spoke a Northeast Texas (north and east of Dallas but not spoken in the far east of Texas) accent. Once you enter the inner suburbs of North Dallas this accent disappears in favor of the accent most notably used by Owen Wilson and Angie Harmon among others.

Yes, but it would have been a "far greater" heartbreak if John Tyler would have lost !! Never would a team "ever" recover that many on sides kicks. Now, we would have known, within a few hours, those incredibly low odds, what one in a 100,000? like ESPN post those college games losses at 2% or 3% one of the American League Playoff games last year was about in the range of 2-6%

To the person that asked how is a HS playing at an nfl stadium....in Texas, football is king. Almost every season a kick off Classic is held at AT&T stadium in Arlington and NRG in Houston and teams from the area, and sometimes across the state play in it. This game was a playoff game 2 before the stage championship between two 5A schools, which at the time was the largest classification. Plano East is one of the largest schools in the state, like +5,000 kids. Tyler John Tyler is now in a smaller classification. Anyway, playoff game locations are decided by the schools playing, and if the stadium they want to use is available. Most later rounds are always held in large venues like AT&T Stadium, NRG, the Alamodome, Kyle field (A&M), Royal Memorial (UT), Ford (SMU), etc. If you want to see how crowded a game can get in Texas, look up in 99 when PNG played Stephenville in the astrodome, and someone on PNG side pans to show their side and all three decks are completely full halfway around, prob close to 25,000 people just for PNG. The largest crowd ever to watch a HS football game was in the old cowboys stadium between some Dallas schools, over 49,000 people. HS football in Texas is something else.

Whether Plano won or not, it doesn't matter. This is still an example of true resilience in athletics. It's still inspirational to any athlete and is still the greatest game of all time. It's just depressing to watch. In fact, when Plano's coach watches the game today, he turns the TV off after the their last touchdown.

this was like the 2006 Florida 5a states game between STA and lakeland. It was 14 to 42 with 2 min left in the 4th quarter. STA intercepted, then did 3 onside kicks and went into overtime. In the first 2 OT's both teams kicked field goals. In the third, lakeland kicked a field goal but STA went for victory. The ball was given to #7 who ran down the middle. The ref called it short. On ESPN, they reviewed the play and said that he actually did score. It was the greatest game I have ever seen.

Just saw the ESPN short, Had to get more of this. A couple thoughts... 1. Nothing is better than a good 1985-95 Football Uniform. Individuality, Spats, Half-Jerseys, Neck Rolls, Giant Hip pads, Double Thigh pads, Double the gear here and none of the uniform there. Good players looked like good players. 2. If you cant comprehend why Plano didnt just onside kick again, here’s why. Regardless of Field position, which was a major factor and the Talent of John Tyler, another factor. The Issue is really about Motivation and Situation. If they ran another onside kick they would have absolutely not gotten that ball, and probably would have given up a return TD anyway. Why? I. The team kicking is tired, elated, relieved, and... not losing anymore. II. The team recieving has just blown the game, but are fresh, pissed and desperate to score. III. If they onside, than #88 cant be a factor on a tackle, #12 is on the sideline, so thats two Plano studs taken out of a huge play. IV. Plano would fear going off-side, or letting ball go out of bounds, etc. Tyler would race to the ball with multiple players going for broke - likely destroying any tacklers as they waited for the ball to go ten yards before they could recover it. V. They would have scored anyway. Only a pooch kick that forced a fair catch could have prevented the outcome. Even that goes wrong in those situations. 1 player out of 1 lane, is all it takes. 3. #88 would have made #22 go out of bounds or tackled him at the 40, had he not been victim of the greatest holding penalty that never got called. 4. Whomever it was on Tyler that grabbed #88 of Plano East on the final kick return is the real MVP. Genius! Savvy! Game Changer! 5. 24 hours word had spread up to Seattle, WA about this game. We all talked about this mysterious game during our teams own film session. We all called BS. Whoops.

It's topped off when the Plano East announcer said, "I think I;m gonna' throw up" lol, lol, lol. But Plano East "back in the day" "that day" was a top, I mean top, rated power house. 24 seconds? WRONG! When Plano East kicked off, there was 3 seconds left on the clock. I was there, and remember looking up at that clock. Before the John Tyler player even made it to mid field time had expired. Where I was sitting you could tell very quickly that he had a clear path to the end zone. I had never seen two sides of a football stadium change in excitement, so many times. Most of the 4th quarter, the Plano East fans were headed to the exits. Then when Plano East took the lead, complete silence on my side of the field, bu it was so loud across the field. In the next 3 seconds everything flipped flopped. Although my wife and I didn't attend John Tyler, we were screaming for joy when that final touchdown was scored. My wife was 9 months pregnant, yet she was jumping up and down shouting! This was the most amazing game, and feel bad for all those folks who headed to the parking lot, only to hear it on the radio.
@Larryzelreh

No, the announcers were actually correct: Plano's final TD was indeed scored with 24 seconds left. When the kickoff was returned for a TD by Tyler, there were 11 seconds left. So Plano actually had a final brief possession that lasted two plays. On the final play of the game, Plano threw an INT.

Wait, if there was only 3 seconds left, why would you even kick it off to them again?? Just squib it or even onside it again and let the time run out. Worst case scenario, you make them throw a hail marry to have to try and win it. You don't kick to them with 3 seconds left! Smh. Terrible coaching.

I think you are misremembering. 24 seconds is right (I trust an announcer saying it on camera as opposed to your memory 20 years removed). Plano East had a great season that included beating their crosstown rival, the Plano Wildcats 28-7. The Wildcats eventually won the 1994 Division I State Championship over Katy Tigers 28-7. There were some good football players in Plano that year. Not to rain on John Tyler's parade either. Rumor has it that Tyler had so much speed and size on that team, Jerry Jones was seen on the sidelines recruiting.
