I never heard of heat hardiness zones. Everyone always talks about the cold hardy zones. I always wondered why there wasn't one, being in Florida, we need it! Thank you for bringing that up! That is probably another reason why some people think they can't grow in Florida. We need to know the heat zone too😄👍

Wow!! Thank you!! What a ton of information. 😊😊 I live in Cape Coral, FL which on the previous maps was zone 10A but on the new 2013 maps is zone 10B. I always felt that we tended more to 10B so now I know. THANK YOU!!!

What are your sources for seasonal predictions, i.e. if we'll have a colder or wetter winter than typical? In the 12 years I've lived in Tampa Bay I've only experienced an actual frost every few years, so I'd like to hedge my bets with my tomatoes.😊

The heat zone map is a lot more useful to me when receiving advice from people in other areas. I watch Epic Gardening. They're in zone 10 and get cold so much earlier and warm so much later than I do in 9 (per the hardiness zones). I need to know who is growing in something like this Florida heat! I hadn't heart of the Climate Atlas. Thanks for linking!

They have Jacksonville as 9b. I think they could make it even more accurate. My neighborhood is more so 9a. Always remember it's an average which means you will have below average lows.

The map puts me into 9a. However, I have found that if I want grow a perennial I need to get one that says it is hardy to =10 degrees. I use that information more than the zone. I agree with you about the sun. I planted a Joe Pye weed which was to grow in my zone and in the sun (not the one that needs shade) but the sun killed it witbin days. Trial and error is sadly another way of determination. Thanks for your videos....always informatiive.

That’s so smart! Yes plant hardiness for heat changes the picture for what plants work here.

Good video! I've done similar videos as well. It's hard to describe, but you did a great job in doing so! It is so important to know that this is just an AVERAGE of the past 30 years. You could technically be in zone 8A but never actually have a zone 8A winter. For instance, you could have ten winters of 8B, ten winters of 7A, five winters of 9A and five winters of 6B. Those would average out to 8A, but it doesn't mean much if you plant 8A plants as they will likely die in five years of 6B winters. Be careful and look at all time lows if you want to be fully risk adverse.
