Yesterday I made a video on Nitrogen, you can watch on • Plant Nutrient Series:... . Today’s video is about the second most important nutrient to a plant in my opinion...POTASSIUM!!! Also known as “pot ash”. This is what the “K” means in “NPK” fertilizers.
Potassium is required for the activation of over 80 plant enzymes as well as fosters nutrient uptake and increases protein production which boosts the overall health of the plant.
The most important role for potassium is “water transportation”. It plays a vital role in the opening and closing of the stomata in the leaves (small holes we cannot see) which is how a plant delivers water and nutrients through a plant.
This education is not for free...it comes with an unwritten promise to be a good steward of the land. If we understand the role of potassium then perhaps we will understand that we are not as deficient in nitrogen as our plants tend to look. Often it is a potassium deficiency that is mistakenly corrected by adding more nitrogen that the soil cannot even hold, thus leaching into our waterways and creating algal blooms.
