What happens if pollen from a different plant ends up on the stigma? Does it still attempt to reproduce with the plant? Does the plant have a way of selecting for the correct pollen?

Yes this is called cross-pollination. This is more beneficial as it results in increased genetic diversity. The other plant has its own set of alleles for a gene that may be different than the plant that the pollen lands on. This different plant could introduce new/different alleles. Genetic diversity is the variety of alleles in a gene pool, so an increase in new or different alleles increases genetic diversity. Populations with genetic diversity are more resistant to change in selection pressures/environment.
