I was lucky in that my first real garden was with my father in law who was born and raised on a farm in Italy and always had a garden. He came to stay with us and I mentioned I wanted a garden. I was successful with flowers but never ventured into vegetables. He picked to spot, measured it out, had someone come rototill and began my training. He got the kids involved also, even the toddler. Needless to say we had the best garden in the neighborhood and expanded the following year. I never forgot all he taught me, wish I had had more time with him. He passed away the following year but his legacy lives on in my kids, and the strawberries! The youngest doesn't have a lot of memories but she does recall weeding with Pop and eating the strawberries.

Last year was my first time ever attempting to plant a garden. My son, who lives in SC, and I had a competition of who could raise the most edible food in our small backyard gardens. We learned a lot from each other and it forced me to research (so I could win, of course!) Although I had many things that did not come up until much later and was very puny, just because of spacing and timing, I still had a lot of hardy plants that survived and produced much for our table and for neighbors--especially tomatoes! LOL (I'm not sure who was more surprised; him, me, my husband, or my dad!) I DID learn a lot from that first year and I am so extremely excited to get more raised beds built (maybe tomorrow as we are expecting 70 degree weather!) and prepare my soil for my little seedlings I have started inside. This year, my son and I decided to try to grow everything from seed--no plants from stores or greenhouses. :) Thanks for your teachings and for sharing!

Hydrophobic Soil - (A couple of videos back) I used the exact method you spoke about the other day in your video with your hydrophobic soil issues. About 10 days ago I put only a couple drops of liquid soap in a bucket of water, then hand watered EVERYTHING. It was a tedious process bcuz the water just wants to run away! I ended up poking holes in the soil w a stick about a half inch thick, then VERY SLOWLY poured the soapy water into each tiny hole. Phewwww! I was glad to be done with THAT job! The very next day I came back with a soft watering over top of a that soil - and EUREKA!!! The water was no longer running away!!! I knew it would work, but it's just fun to talk about it!!! So I followed that with worm castings, and another watering bcuz even though the water is sinking down, the soil is still drying very fast. So I topped everything with crushed leaves as a mulch. I'm in Central Texas and all our Live Oaks dropped every single leaf bcuz of that big freeze. (BTW- those trees are NOT used to being naked!!) Nevertheless, the result has given us many extra leaves on the ground! So I'm using them as mulch. They are very thick leaves, and even crushed up, they will take a few years to breakdown completely. I just wanted to report my crops have bounced back since hydrating the soil, giving them their supplements, and mulching them! They are clearly enjoying their life now that things are "taken care of". I look forward to seeing what happens in your beds w the soil issues! 💚🌱💚🌱💚🌱💚

Excellent overview of Square Foot Gardening. My parents & I have used this method successfully and with minor modifications. Getting the book is very helpful because having a reference means you're safe from forgetting crucial steps in the process. I also recommend keeping a calendar specifically for the garden... use it to time your plantings, record rain & temps, frost dates, drought, etc. Save the calendars and use them to help create each year's new calendar. They also serve as a historical record for your homestead. Your grandkids will thank you. 💚

I don't want to use pesticides to keep them from my house because I want my vegetable garden more. I went on line and found amazing flowers that do the job for me. I found on Farmars Almanac that petunias help repel leaf hoppers, squash bugs, tomatoes hornworms, and aphids. Just plant them next to the plants you want to keep protected. Just wanted to give a little bit of feedback from the wealth of knowledge I received from you. I will receive your book tomorrow and can't wait to dive into it. Starting out my first garden and I am definitely having analysis paralysis to finalize my bed plans for what I what to plant and how much I can squeeze in there. Have been so confused by mixed information from seed packets, transplant tags, planter app, other blogs and videos. It's crazy how vastly different spacing suggestions can be. This helped me to understand that number one, I am not planting in rows, so ignore that. And two how to make a best judgement on spacing considering planting methods and care. This helped a lot! I know I’m not great at pruning my indeterminate tomatoes so I try to give them a 2 foot area.. I have cut it down to 18 inches when I ended up with a few too many plants. I have trouble killing seedlings so they have to go somewhere! When I did that I tried to prune more but basically ended up with slightly smaller tomatoes. They still taste great so it’s ok. Lol

My Green Stalk arrived and I can't wait to plant it! I'm using 1 raised bed, 2 raised containers, and my green stalk. We will see how it goes. My old garden was a raised bed. That's not an option where we live now.
