I'm in 6a and have had Chicago hardy for 10 years, they die back every year, I have tried multiple ways to prevent it but haven't had any luck yet, the nice thing is I get about 6 to 9 feet of new growth every year with good fig production, one part of them being to be that productive is soil ammendment, about 6 feet in diameter mounded with plenty of goat shit. This guy is in San Diego and should've made a better choice in fig varieties for his climate.

Thanks for the great info. I got one of these at the store but it's really tiny. The trunk is probably 3 inches long and 1/8 thick. Do I plant this directly in the ground or grow it first in a pot and transplant later when it's bigger? If I'm planting it outside, of course I'll put a protective net around it.

I just planted a Chicago Hardy here in Florida from a container into the ground. It is about 4 ft tall. When planting I notice well developed circular roots. I manipulated the sides of the plant but didn't do much with the bottom of the plant where the circular pattern existed. Should I uproot, disrupt the shape of the circular pattern and replant?

My Brown Turkey fig tree in our north coastal San Diego County back yard does not have any detectable shallow surface roots. It’s close to 20 years old and was planted in a built up berm in the center of a full sun area that was formerly lawn. I only get one edible crop of fruit a year, but after the first couple years of small crops, we now can count on about a month+ of abundant delicious ripe fruit beginning either the last week of July or the first week of August, depending on the summer heat level. During the second and third week of harvesting, I can usually fill a huge colander bowl with fruit every other day. Only one year about ten years ago we did not have any edible fruit. We are located about 3-4 miles from the coast and it was unusually overcast and cool until the very end of July that summer. The tree did not receive enough full sun or warmth so the fruit did not swell and develop color until September-October. However, though the fruit eventually looked ripe, it never fully ripened, didn’t soften up, and lacked sweetness. My tree requires almost no care, other than pruning after the last of the leaves drop in winter. If I procrastinate and miss the chance to prune after the final leave drop and before the new branch growth begins, I just skip pruning. I’ve tried various methods of pruning from conservative to severe and it doesn’t seem to affect the quality or quantity of the fruit crop. New branches grow no matter what I do or don’t do, and the fruit develops on the new growth. The main advantage of pruning seems to be keeping the tree from growing too tall and too wide, so I prune in a way to make it easy to reach and pick the fruit without needing a ladder or a picking device. In fact, due to an unrelated complication of life that took all my attention away from the garden, my tree has not received ANY additional irrigation for the last 4 years or pruning, and we do not receive any rain from mid-spring through late fall/early winter. Yet the fig crops have been as good as ever, so the tree must have grown some good deep roots in the early years. On the other hand, we used to have a huge beautiful ornamental Ficus tree in another area of our back yard garden and it had many large surface roots that made mowing the lawn a chore. While that evergreen ornamental ficus tree was related to the edible fruit tree, and is sometimes casually called a “fig” tree, the trees are quite different. Ficus fig fruits are tiny and dry and not at all edible for humans. I would never have an ornamental ficus tree in an outdoor garden again because unless the tree is kept small and intensely managed/contained, the surface roots of growing trees can heave concrete sidewalks, driveways, and foundations, and the roots can even invade waste lines.

I don't know who suggests to transplant inch or two deeper. Fact is how trees sold from nurseries arrive in pots with trunks already too deep in root ball. And required planting step is now to perform trunk flair excavation back to trees original birth grade just above where buttress roots are radially outbound away from trunk. I know it's difficult to locate trunk Flare on such young tree as this one. Just identify where tissue between above ground and below ground transitions. Also never add new soil on top of original root ball surface. Donut mulching is another outdated landscape maintenance method. Or at least make sure to remove donut after year one. Which otherwise ends up suffocating outbound Roots below grade. Then you will get surface rooting. Remember best place to irrigate is border between outer root ball and surrounding surface to encourage new radially outbound root growth.

Quick question about the root system. Do the roots go deep, straight down, or are they shallow and spread?
@jennhoff03
3 жыл бұрын
Their roots are shallow and spread. They send out "feeder roots" along the surface to look for nutrients. That's one reason I've been doing mine in containers, because my dad has a riding lawn mower and is constantly going over other tree roots (nature's speed bumps) when he mows. I hear they do better in-ground, though, so I might try one out there and see what happens.

No worries about the wasps. They were introduced to CA (non-native) to enhance commercial fig crops, but they are incredibly tiny and nothing like brown paper wasps or yellow jackets. Not all figs require pollination by fig wasps. I’ve had a Brown Turkey fig for about 20+ years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fig wasp.
