I just recently decided to start my avocado seed growing process. I have no idea what I am doing but your channel seems like a great place to start. 🌱

Do roots not get over crowded or tangled up in a small pot like that over time? They don’t need more space then that??

We have had a wonderful experience growing avocado saplings from seeds. It's very satisfying to see them develop over time. We did have a major issue with Fungal Gnats in the soil. Following the advice of online articles, we tried Beneficial Nematodes, Mosquito Bits as well as under watering and sticky traps. None of these methods worked for us. Finally I discovered a suggestion to put 1 inch of sand over the topsoil, and after about two weeks, the fungal gnats seem to be GONE. Scott, I am wondering if the benefit of doing this top soil addition is causing more harm than good. While the gnats are gone, my saplings are losing leaves and are both drooping and withering. Soil remains moist, stem is green, and I only water once every other week. I live in a very dry desert climate and have been misting water on them every day. Any suggestions? I am starting to suspect root rot, but have not confirmed. Soil smells healthy/earthy - no sour rot smell - and is less than moist but not dry.

Do you have a way to check the roots? Fungal gnats will destroy the roots of plants, and even though you're not seeing any gnats about, it's possible that their eggs have hatched in the soil and are eating your sapling's roots. The only thing that saved my indoor plants that still had reasonably healthy roots was to remove the plant from the soil, spray the roots with 3% hydrogen peroxide and replant in fresh growing media, then cover with a layer of sand or rocks or glass beads - anything to provide a barrier to stop the gnats from laying their eggs in the soil again. Mind you, these weren't avocado saplings, so I'm not sure how well an avocado tree would do using this method.

@@jecriggs thank you for the suggestion. I did a full re-pot; cleaned and sterilized the pots and bought new soil to mix with perlite and sand. I layered an inch of the perlite over the drainage holes to help with gnats from underneath. The roots of one of them were very short and black. Although there was no smell, nor did I feel as if the roots were weak or brittle, I used ur cleaning method suggestion. The new soil has much better drainage, and I made a couple additional drainage holes in the pots. I'm inspecting the soil daily to keep my eye on any fungas gnats. If they develop, I'll have to use sand again, but I really don't want to suffocate the roots so we'll see. One of our two saplings started to develop newer leaves so we decided not to cut that one down, but the other one we chopped it right at 6in from the soil level. The trunk is still green, hoping for the best. Thanks again.

My Avo tree's seed rotted and broke off of my tree's stem... Will that cause my tree to die or will it still be okay?

Good news, Sara! I have a video coming out at some point in May about this very question! The short answer, until then - pick one to keep and prune back the rest.

I don't know what I do wrong, but almost every time I transition my plants from water to soil, they die within a few weeks :/
