This will be interesting to follow as I've had a few issues with wood chip causing fungal problems. Mind you the chip was from an unknown source so it could of come from an infected tree. Thanks ,I will keep watching to see your progress.

You've reminded me that I have to figure out where I'm going to put my onions out. Thanks.😁 Good job of using available space.

Can you tell.me where to put the others please? 😂

There is no need to worry about the woodchips taking nitrogen. It will only be from a very thin layer where it lies. The problem arises when the woodchips are mixed in with the soil.

Hi Erica I havnt seen onions mulched with woodchip before but everyone seems to be trying all kinds of new ideas so the proof will be in the harvesting. Whatever happens with those roots I sure you will get a good crop. I think it’s the next crop going in after the onions that may be affected as woodchip takes awhile to break down so I wouldn’t grow carrots or parsnips in there for instance as they may fork. But yeah I think you could be onto a winner👍🙋🏻

I won't be growing food in here again as it will be planted with perennial flowers.

The wood chips can also be viewed as being a preparatory stage for the perennial bed later, as presumably there'll be a lot of woody plants, so quite efficient.

Good job with the onions Erica. If you are short on space you could always multisow the onions so put 3 of the sets very close together and then leave a 15cm-20cm gap between each one, might mean you can squeeze more into one bed. Take care 😊

very interesting, they survived in an unheated greenhouse from Jan 6th. They are tougher than i thought, i have been starting them in mid march thinking that the temps were too low before that

I usually grow them outside over winter, they're a frost hardy crop.

Excellent job Erica …. Those wood chips are in the top of the soil not in the soil where the roots of the onions are … so all good 👍🏼

If you run out of space plant out somewhere in the wilderness. Even if you don't get to harvest it, someone will, or might take it into their garden. Or it might even lead to the plant growing wild by itself year after year...

Great videos Erica 👍 and very informative. Just wondered what your thoughts were on mulching with old chicken/duck bedding with its built in manure.

Awesome. I've also grown my onions in modules this year! First time doing so. This was really helpful as I'm planting mine out tomorrow. Sadly, I don't have any mulch at the moment.

I’ve done the same thing. I have put in 6 new beds but they are a set size and small ish. Ended up so far with 3 beds and still the same to go lol and haven’t done the new red Barron ones I’ve managed to get as my seeds died off when I wasn’t well enough to go out and water them. I’m hoping that these grow well for you and you can fit the others in lol. 😂

Hi Erica, it’s Cate from Northern Ireland again. I’m just wondering if you can tell me if planting out red onion sets the day before that snow last week or the week before, would have damaged them 💁🏻♀️ I only put in a few and some of them are sprouting green shoots today, so I think they’re fine but would like your expert opinion 🙏🏻 We only had a light sprinkle ❄️ and I brushed it off as soon as I woke up and seen it 🤞🏻🍀
