I think if you take a little dirt from your garden and rub it all over 1 potato from the store and had a 2nd as a control that you didnt rub dirt on, you would find that the dirty tater would sprout faster.

When you harvest in the fall, just put the largest potato from each plant back in the ground. Next spring you will have a new potato plant come up so you only have to dig the bed once. Less disturbance to the soil. And you don’t have to pay for seed potatoes ever again.

I grow beautiful potatos just from potato eyes. I carefully remove them with a bit of potato all around them, but not too much. Place them on plate upside down to dry just a little bit, forming a film. Then I plant them in large pots and ad 3 to almost 4 inches of good garden soil, or manure, or whatever I have. Now 7 to 10 weeks later, gorgeous healthy plants emerged, and I have them growing beautifully in several pots. So we have our plants, and we still ate the potatos these came from.

Then just pull whole container up and tip contents in barrow and search for potatoes. Put spent soil/compost in hole and plant garlic. Minimum 5kg or 12 lbs per bucket. Iv'e had 15kg from one. Almost a bit too easy. :)

I'm planning to plant another crop of potatoes. I planted two varieties for my early crop, Yukon gold and russet golden. My next crops are going to be fingerling and a red potato. My gardening this year iscomplicated by needing to dig up most of what I planted in March, April, May and early this monthbecause the maple tree that I planted everything underneath has to come down! I'm digging new beds in an area of my yard that I haven't dug in before. I find lots of interesting things when digging in my yard. I have concluded that the previous owners thought glass was a soil amendment! Beyond mundane things like glass, nails, tin cans, bits of pottery, and miscellaneous plastic things, I have found half a car battery, bullets, and yesterday, a half round hollow metal object filled with dirt. Always exciting!

(think: candy wrappers) •a pretty neat lil eagle- shaped silver pin annnnnd 1 honorable mention, my #1 favorite find (so far)//pride & joy: •an absolutely stunning piece of fossilized/ "petrified" wood. !!! yeahhhh babyyy !!! it's honestly a pretty nice sized piece, too.. *this particular treasure was not from this year, though. i actually found it about 9 years ago or so...when i initially started digging/ cleaningup the yard/setting up garden space after having just moved here. &ever since then, I've hoped to stumble upon another piece, but unfortunately so far no luck. Thanks for cool tip on sulferchips. Were in California, each month I've been planting 5 rows, 5 seed potatoes. Same variety as you. Our harvest last year was out standing We have one more planting on July 1st. An then were set to last thru spring. These last few months being stuck at home, gave us time to revamp our root cellar, yeah were one of the lucky Californians, large property an a working cellar. Love your videos♡

Where are you in California? I’m in Rancho Cucamonga (10a) and just planted potatoes at the beginning of the month. Had a hard time finding seed potatoes and then thought I was too late. Good to hear I might not be. Just starting to see some growth poking through the soil. Lucky you with a root cellar. Not sure what to do if we actually get a decent harvest 😳

I just got my 2nd order in from wood prairie farms and I will plant them this weekend. I started my Yukon gold's in February in grow bags and 5gal buckets in my house under 300 watt LED light now I will have them outside in the same bags and buckets. I'm still looking for different types to grow. Thanks for sharing all your information and doing excellent videos

I got from the same place too. Mine are chitting, which I saw the definition being the sprouting process of the eyes to decrease time to harvest

I live in southern California. I have a few different patches of potatoes. 3 5-gal containers, and 3 small areas. I find myself needing some potatoes, I harvest a bucket or a patch, re-plant with sprouted taters and in a week or so, I harvest another spot and re-plant. And, I just let one of two potatoes sprout, I've never bought extra seep potatoes.

I was just wondering last week if it were possible to plant round 2 of potatoes. Thanks for confirming! So good to have your advise! Your channel is one of the first places I go when I have a question about my garden. Thank you!

I plant potatoes when the ones in my pantry sprout 🤷🏼♀️. Southern California zone 9B. Someday I'll get some seed potatoes, but this method has worked great so far! Except for the pot that the backyard mouse found.

I will be planted potatoes this weekend. I have both seed potatoes and sprouted ones from the produce aisle that I sorted when some grew eyes. Those are the ones I planted. The ones which didn't grow eyes I left in a bowl on the counter. Those didn't sprout but the ones in the ground are growing at the same rate as their seed cousins. All are about 3 ft tall right now! And pretty flowers on both types!

Thank you ,was wondering when to plant potatoes. We bought organic potatoes , from the store let them sprout and put them in the ground. We got a decent amount back. The sulfer is good to know! But I was looking on the time of the season ( WHEN) because we just put them in the summer . Good to know we can do it twice .

I really wish you would wait like one more week to release the video because I feel like seeing the plants sprouting up would be so much more fulfilling than just being like “okay they’re planted! Bye!” I mean ideally you would actually show them being harvested but I understand that that would take forever. This video has all of the most useful and informative parts of planting (which thank you as always for showing the whole process it’s the best, so useful) but I just think the entertainment value could be enhanced.

Good video, thank you for the timely and useful info. I watch British allotment garden channels, and they call chitting putting potatoes out on a shelf and letting the eyes of the potato develop. I don't think they have ever referred to chitting as cutting the potato into sections around the eyes. Maybe next year I'll try some potatoes in my raised beds. Have a great gardening day! 🦋🐝🌱🌿

I grow my potatoes in containers. I have 3 containers of reds that are just about ready to harvest. Last month I planted one container of russets that I was able to find in store. Like you, finding seeds was difficult this season. So, I will have a small 2nd harvest this year.
