I’ve tryed quantity over quality but in open canary grass they just don’t survive the deer, grass, and the voles. Now I’m on second season of caging pockets of them with 100% success

Is your plan to just wait on them, or now trim them down back to below the browse line?

There’s already enough natural dogwood in that area for browse. I am hoping the ones I planted start to bush out some more. Next spring instead of planting trees I am going to make a serious effort to do willow cuttings. 3-4ft cuttings. I’ve had better results when the cuttings are over 2ft so they don’t get choked out by the grass.

You ever plant hybrid willow or streamco willow. I bought 3 to 6 footers and was curious how long I'll have to leave up fence

Good move on the willows. They grow extremely fast. Maybe 2 years with fence.

Yeah the willows grow fast but if you tube them they won’t be much of a fence. Not many lower branches. All the ones I’ve planted I’ve tubed because of the deer browse. You will need a lot if you want a fence 2-3 rows wide.

@wisconsinwhitetail9744 I used 5ft fence 6 ft wide by 40ft long 2 rows. No tubes. Hope it works

When planting dog wood it’s quantity over quality. Plant those sticks in the hundreds. Plant more than the deer can eat. I planted over 2000 cuttings this spring. Deer cannot get them all.

I haven’t had the greatest luck with dogwood cuttings. I’ve had a few willow cuttings survive but not the dogwoods.
