I cried today when I heard that Liam O Flynn has passed from us. A humble and good man, his music so often and always helped me remember my own soul. He never sought heroism or power, but he stood with whistle and pipes as a great healer of souls. Planxty has a place in helping Ireland to peace through the Ages. I thank each and every one of them. And may God bless and guard them through all of time and space.

Great posting. My favourite album from the Seventies is their 'black' album. Never saw the whole band perform but have been lucky enough to see Andy Irvine here in Oz on many occasions. My wife has had the chance to stage manage him at music festivals. Lovely man and gifted musician. In 2013 he performed at the National Folk Festival in Canberra with Donal Lunny.

.... Life is lived and sometimes we go through musical phases.... I recall listening to Planxty in the early 80's. I saw Christy at Glastonbury 1986 after losing my son in 92, kind of drifted away from music. To have found this live show culminated so much emotion within me and these 4 men were so underrated in England. To have read the post that Liam passing a few years ago washed over me in such a manner that it was like losing a son again! The beauty of the human being and its ability to play an instrument. The 4 of these men brought and bring again, such overwhelming joy in my heart. The guy in the peaks catching a live gig was surely a golden ticket moment.

Over 30 years ago I was walking in the Peak District and in a small village there, Edale, which all walkers everywhere will know of, I saw a notice board outside the village hall. It announced that Liam O'Flynn was playing there that very evening. I had and have seen Planxty and the individual members a few times in sizeable venues over the years, but that evening seeing Liam by shear happenstance in a village hall was magic. His music and talent lives on to be heard hopefully by generations to come.

Each of the guys mentioned had a unique style and sound , a case could be made for any of them to be top dog but that is not the point Liam like the others was an absolute master of his instrument Each had the ability to transcend the listener to another plane , in company with the other members of Planxty Liam was undoubtedly in the premiere rank of players it is my humble opinion that no other piper would sound equal to him if they were fortunate eneough to play with Planxty.

I remember seeing Planxty back in the early 70's when they played in pubs around Ireland. IIRC they played in a pub called the Big Tree in Clogherhead near Drogheda. Used go to the youth hostel nearby and had amazing drinking sessions watching them. They were brilliant then and gave Irish music a whole new sound. Them and Sweenys Men.

@@oceanlopez4739 There's plenty of notated music -- some truly great piping tunes were collected and notated in the mid-1800s -- but ear-learning definitely helps with the many nuances of this music (especially tone and technique for this insane instrument I love so much). Regardless of how you learn them, it's pretty much "playing until your fingers fall off" while keeping your pipes from falling apart, LOL
