A chill went up my spine when Dr. Youn started talking about the upper lip lift. A former coworker, late 50s at the time, had decided to have one. She was very diligent about doing her homework: researched the procedure, read reviews, found an excellent plastic surgeon whom she felt she could trust, etc. Unfortunately, even top-notch professionals can't necessarily predict their patients' physical responses to surgery. The scar under her nose was initially very neat and thin, and looked like it would be almost invisible once fully healed... but then she developed a keloid, which continued to grow at an alarming rate. (Imagine, if you will, an irregularly shaped plum under your nose.) Keloids are unpredictable and can be difficult to remove, since they're produced by the body's response to surgery or damage. They can also grow back and become worse if they're removed. It was an absolute nightmare for her. We eventually lost touch when I moved away from the area, but the poor woman had taken to wearing a surgical mask long before the advent of Covid-19.

I feel like a big issue with lip lift is also the position of scar. Being under nose and above the lip looks like place that can easily get infected, and imagine you get a cold right after surgery or you have allergies... doesn't sound good. It's not easy to keep that area clean and especially not to move it. And scar at that place would be super visible if anything goes wrong. So, not worth of risk imo.

A med spa recommended I do it (and was kind of pushy about it) but I was concerned about lumpiness, about it filling up over time, about it possibly traveling... I had a lot of concerns. Then I talked in depth with my doctor who addressed all my questions. He explained why he thought I was a good candidate and he gave me time to do my own research. I'm so happy with the results. I got a gastric balloon… absolute waste of time and money. I was sick the entire time (nausea, diarrhea and vomiting every day) I had that balloon in, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE gastritis and reflux, poor nutrient absorption because the balloon irritates the lining of your stomach and gets in the way of proper digestion. Because I felt so sick for those six months I couldn’t eat anything or keep anything down, so I didn’t learn proper nutrition or portion control (which is the point of having the balloon). Everything made me sick, I had zero energy. I lost 50 lbs from essentially starving myself, but almost immediately gained it back after taking the balloon out. The support provided by the clinic I went to was terrible. The nutritionist was very insensitive and basically kept telling me to drink Diet Coke every morning to “rinse” the balloon so it would help me with my symptoms. Highly do not recommend. Just eat well, exercise. Don’t take short cuts.

I think people need to keep in mind that cosmetic surgery is still surgery and there are risks. You don't often get to see the bad outcomes because bad outcomes don't sell procedures, but they still exist. I remember one woman who got lip filler injected into a vein by accident and her lip turned black and nearly rotted off. She had rush back to her doctor and was almost too late because, even though it was 1 day since her procedure, tissues die really quickly without blood. She thought the black color was just heavy bruising and almost didn't go. If she hadn't returned that day she would have lost part of her lip and they would've had to do major reconstruction on her face for her to look normal again.

I definitely agree with your assessment of under-eye filler and Ultherapy. I was always self-conscious about my under eye hollows, but now I'm more self-conscious about the weird bumps from filler migration that are very evident in some lighting conditions. I have also seen occasional swelling with tear trough filler. The doctor told me that the filler would dissolve over time, but mine has not. Ultherapy was painful (and expensive) and I didn't see a lot of tightening, but I did see some fat disolve, which is ageing.

@Suzanne4415

Yeah, very skeptical of the idea that you can count on any HA filler product to not migrate and to complely dissolve, lots of evidence has come out against that. Also skeptical of all these treatments that "stimulate collagen for tightening" by basically cooking or making tiny cuts or both. Scar tissue ofc has more collagen than intact tissue, but it's tensile strength is at most 80%, so I suspect it makes skin more prone to wrinkling in the future. That's not even getting into the risk of affecting tissues you didn't want to target (fat), which I've seen a lot of people complain about after Ultherapy.

Dr. Youn, you always give the best reliable information. One of the reasons I subscribed to your channel is the valuable medical advice you give and if a person is interested in a procedure, they can go to your channel and find whether the it is a good idea or not. I think anyone wanting something done in plastic surgery, are lucky if they can see you for a consult because they are going to receive the best advice. Now I know there are several excellent Plastic surgeons out there but after watching "Botched" I also know there are also several plastic surgeons doing things on patients that the patient never agreed to, for example inserting a larger breast implants then what the person wanted. In my opinion these doctors are not following the Hippocratic Oath. I live in Canada and in order to see a specialist such as a plastic surgeon, you would have to be referred by your primary physician so there would have to be a medical reason on why you would need a specialist. I don't believe comedic procedures are such a big deal here but I am really glad I look at myself am I am pleased with what I see

Two women in my life had gastric bypass. One had some issues with not absorbing enough nutrients from her food, so she needed to be careful with supplements and even infusions. But... if she hadn't gotten it, at that point in time, doctors gave her about 5-10 years to live, and she had young kids at home, so she got on with it. She lost the weight she'd gained from a thyroid issue, gestational diabetes, and medication for Lupus, never gained it back. The other lady had fewer issues and looks and feels amazing! A lot of people say all the people they know gained the weight back and then some, but I wonder... if the person gained the weight due to things like pregnancy and medication side effects (that they then discontinue), it makes sense that they'd lose the weight. If the issue is being an overeater with issues about their relationship with food, they're likely to go back to those habits when they have free rein again and it doesn't make them instantly vomit to eat too much. It feels like a lot of people blame the procedure instead of the eating habits that are instilled in people, a weight problem vs a food problem.

I guarantee you that you are lying to yourself. You’re coping by forcing yourself to believe that the surgery was good, but in reality it almost certain makes you uglier. People who opt for purely cosmetic plastic surgery should be first treated for mental health problems such as body dysmorphia before they are cleared to sign up for a plastic surgery. Anyone who believes they are so ugly that they need to put plastic inside their face or body is unimaginably and disproportionately insecure. I hope you realize that this is not intended to offend you, insult you, or berate you in any way shape or form. I am simply here to indicate the problem millions of young women across the world are going through. Instead of writing me off as some random internet troll, accept reasoning, and try to prevent other people from undergoing such pathology. Be well.

You forgot Coolscultping which also has a low (in the 60's) rating on realself! It often doesn't give good results AND the side effect PAH where the fat cells harden and grow (instead of shrink) is highly under reported and is a horrific side effect! I know because I got it. Went from a size 8 to size 16 over the course of a year and half and its drastically effected my overall health...something that happens a lot in our support group but no one is studying it! We suspect it causes all over system inflammation. There are many plastic surgeons in the country whose whole practices are mostly doing PAH liposuction revision surgeries now, as invasive surgery is the only way to get rid of it and still many people need multiple surgeries or never get their bodies back to their before photos. There are surgeons who are doing these surgeries 5 times a week. A 2018 study found that 1 in 138 people who get coolscuplting will become deformed by the PAH side effect but the pharmacutical company Allergen (who also produced a cancer causing recalled breast implants), will still say its just 1 in 4,000. I would of run out the med spa door had I heard either of those numbers. This is the same thing the 90s super model Linda Evanglista just settled with Allergen out of court (to a large settlment) for disfguring her. Women commit suicide or become recluses over this horrific side effect. Its sooo not worth it. But you can bet Allergan will continue to use it until they are stopped because it nets them $64 billion a year. Lots of people have PAH and don't even know it and think they are just gaining weight and their stomach feels weird. Would love Dr. Youn to do a video on this and spread the word. A top plastic surgeon who does PAH revision surgeries even told me that hes worked on multiple Allergen executives because they had PAH themselves! Here’s a video of a top CA plastic surgeon talking about it. instagram.com/tv/CUggNkNAaVN/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I'm always a fan of doctors that say patients should try natural/less invasive options for weight-loss before resorting to any of the gastric surgeries. The main reason for that is your diet has to change RADICALLY for most of them, and if you can't stick to something less invasive - fewer calories, whole grains, portion control, etc. then surviving and thriving after the surgery is going to be really hard on you. (This is observations from people I know in my personal life who have had it done - one is thriving, though they admit that it's sometimes hard to not be able to really indulge for birthdays or holidays, the other went off course within a few months and ended up rushed to the hospital because they were vomiting blood.) So it's really cool to see you suggest people use plastic surgery as a last resort, not a first one.

I had Lapband surgery. Due to several health issues that don't let me reduce weight for long. I did loose a lot slowly over a few years. But I was getting a lot of reflux the last few years. Slowly I had to get the band deflated. I had a bad aspiration during one Lupus episode. I was deflating and inflating a bit several times afterwards. I mention this to my respiratory specialist. I had a Bronchoscopy, and found to have damage to my lungs. It is believed to be caused by aspirating when sleeping, at times that I thought it was just reflux. I had the band removed at great expense and pain. Like you doctor, I don't see the gastric balloon as recommendable.

It’s helped noticeably (I understand it takes a few months for full effects to be in complete effect) and many people have said I look brighter in the face and under my eyes looks smoother. I’m 32. Actually, my main and personal concern with a lip lift is the fact that your muscles might permanently get damaged, so even though it might look great when your face is staying still, it looks soooo obviously weird as soon as you start talking. And this isn’t only for a short period after the surgery, but it’s permanent. It’s the same thing with shaving the jaw bone.

Those gastric surgeries are incredibly popular in my country (Chile). I know loooots of people that have a balloon, or had their stomachs cut, etc., because they feel dieting doesn't work. In fact my FIL recently underwent one and he has lost a considerable amount of weight but I feel he didn't change his habits enought to loose as much as he should (aka: he should exercise, but he does not). I think the surgeries are very seductive because they seem to be "easier" -even if they're major surgeries, with death being a possible outcome- than just eating less/healthier and moving more

I had a lip lift. My philtrum was stretched out after 6+ years of fillers trying to achieve the look of a lip lift. Although I have a scar, I am SOOOOO HAPPY I did the lip lift. My philtrum looks like how it did before all the filler. I DO NOT REGRET my decision and believe it is a great option for those with a long philtrum and those that understand the risks and the guaranteed scar. Like with any procedure on a younger person, a scar is inevitable and that needs to be understood. Open rhinoplasty, SCAR. Breast augmentation, SCAR, brow lift, SCAR! This is just common sense.

I got up to 250lbs/121kg with , for me, little muscle in the pandemic. Back to the gym. Lost some fat. Strongest I've ever been in January. Partial reason for slow weightloss. If you go hard you lose muscle . Now. 5_10 percent he said. Let's make it 15. Makes 18kg for me. Thats only halfway there. That's Stil overweight for me. Really not worth side effects. Try a high protein diet. Having maybe one real meal and tiny bits of protein, sometimes Skyr sometimes shakes every couple hours seemingly made my stomach realize it doesn't need to be that full

My Dr injected my scar with a steroid Kenalog to help the scaring. However it’s all a wait and see game. Do I regret it no I don’t I hated my lip before. It was thin now they are so pretty. Funny thing is, the food allergies didn't upset my belly, so I had no idea they cased my joint pain and made it near impossible for me to lose weight... I strongly feel its a big key to weight loss when nothing else works. I did a food elimination diet and slowly added foods back in to see what cased me problems which turned out to be dairy, eggs, gluten and night shades.

The gastric balloon should be left for wieght loss specialists, but is a very good step to loose weight. Noone wakes up and suddenly decides to under go surgery if they could just loose weight with eating less and healthy. For example it is often used to get down to a weight where patients can receive a gastric bypass or sleeve, if they are too overweight to safely perform anesthesia. Weight loss surgery is like cutting the spleen out because we cant stop it from bleeding. It might seem like a drastic step, and hopefully one day we have better solutions without altering so many important pathways in the body, but right now it is out best option to keep patients from dying way too young.

What sucks about the bullhorn lip lift is that I have a nose that is too short for my face and a long philtrum. Both issues would be solved if I had the surgery in the future. Apparently you can't get cosmetic surgery to make your nose longer on your face. At best you can change the shape or make it stick out more, but the placement on your face itself isn't changeable from what I could find. Keloids suck :( I've read about them and it just so dumb of the body to overreact like that. It also sucks that they're not really removable. I hope in the future we have a way to prevent the body from over responding like it does. Hyperactive scar tissue like that doesn't help anyone. It also extra sucks because it can happen from ANY damage. Doesn't have to be surgery; It could be acne, a bug bite, anything that promotes scar tissue. Luckily, it seems that silicone gel/sheets can help both prevent them from happening, but also address existing ones. It's also a cheap solution to give a shot if you are wanting to minimize your keloid scar if you have one.
