Yes, shop activities that cause air particulates are concerning. But don't you think all that _concrete & marble_ cutting is concerning? I mean, according to Wikipedia, _"Asbestos_ is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral" often found in _stone!_ And there Ray is, working in and crawling around all that "stone" debris from time to time. And who knows what _other materials_ get flung around from all that constant sawing? I'd say it's either time to move (again) or get used to shutting those doors a lot more often. (Take a look at Eric O's operation if you need any hints; all he has to deal with is a seemingly constant _lawn mower._ )

Nice to see you back, Ray. But this transmission is underfilled now. The correct procedure is: fill until it starts dropping out of the fill hole, then start the engine and fill again until it drops again, then screw in the plug and wait to reach the oil temperature indicated on the pan-sticker, then open the fill hole again and let it drop out until it ends. That is the correct oil level. There is a sense why they supplied so many bottles of new oil and maybe the new pan is even larger than the old one. Big cooling fins with too little oil in the transmission...don't think that makes sense.... I serviced many of these ZF transmissions. Greetings from Bavaria/Germany.

Glad you're back and feeling better! As a BMW enthusiast and DIYer the only slightly triggering bit was the "V6" since BMW 6 cylinders are inline 6s. A completely understandable error was the "twin turbo" because of their goofy "Twin Power Turbo" marketing speak; it's actually a single dual-scroll turbo on the B58 engine that model uses. Speaking of stupid marketing, "lifetime fluid" is definitely another one of those. ZF who actually manufactures the transmission will tell you it should be changed every 8 years or 60k miles at most. The "correct" fluid fill procedure is to fill to overflowing, loosely replace the fill plug, start the engine and with your foot on the brake use manual mode to go through all the gears for a few seconds in each gear, then in park hold the revs at 2k for a bit. When trans temp reaches 40C (but not yet 50), remove the fill plug and top off to overflowing again while the engine is running. Usually you can add a bit more at that point but it's typically not enough that I'd worry about this one being underfilled.
@jimmyaber5920
5 ай бұрын
Important!! Fill engine off, start, then fill with engine running. Depending on how long it sits and it varies with other factors, the torque converter drain down could be a few ounces or two quarts. When engine starts on one with more TC drain, it will need more fluid before you load it. I have serviced many of these in BMW and the other brands and some will have low enough fluid level to slip or not engage when put in gear if not topped up once you start engine. Usually when it reaches 50C there will be a little drain from plug from warming expansion of fluid.

It is great to see you back. Being sick always sucks. Please have that customer go to the dealer to have that ZF trans filled properly. That type of trans is in many vehicles including Stellanis now. You need to follow the proper fill procedures for the vehicle whether it’s just getting to a certain temp while running and finishing the fill or put in to service mode to fill accumulators. The trans is without a doubt under filled and you may ruin that customers trans by being underfilled. Nissan/infinitis have a similar procedure on the 7 speed for this reason as well.

@deplorablelibertarian

Was the ‘sediment’ in the transmission pan just clutch dust? I knew the cylinder is used to maintain hydraulic pressure in the transmission, but not for sure on the sediment. Transmissions, brake systems, etc; all work off hydraulic pressure.

Nice! 😊
@user-ts9du2rm1q

@@deplorablelibertarian I think you are missing the point of "that component"... It's not needed for normal driving as then the pump keeps the fluid pressure high. And that's why there is no such component in most gearboxes. But in a car with a stop/start system when you stop at an intersection (as an example) and stop/start system shuts down the engine, then after you release brake pedal and engine is restarted automatically there is no fluid pressure immediately. So "that component" is pumped up with fluid. The spring inside of it is compressed by fluid pressure and that pressure is preserved. When engine is restarted after you release brake pedal the solenoid in "that component" is opened and the pressurised fluid stored inside of it allows the car to drive away immediately. Without needing to wait split second while pump starts up and jerks the car. Regarding dust it's most probably clutch dust itself, could be partially bound by some additive in that fluid, I'm not a chemist. And I think Ray did not tell us the mileage of that car. At least I haven't noticed that. That said I would probably never ever install that kit for any of my customers! Original filter integrated into the pan has it's inlet raised from the bottom, so all that dust is normally not sucked into it. Replacement filter seems to have it's inlet straight down and there didn't seem to be any support for it mechanically to stay above the bottom. So it will drop onto a bottom of a pan and will always suck all sediment. At least it looks this way from the filming angle. Even more so when driving over bump that filter will be jumping too and additionally mechanically scraping sludge to be sucked into it.

The stored pressure is capable of keeping te clutches closed, so that you don't have to wait for oil pressure after the engine is started again! Oh, wheeeee... It's a 6 Inline, Not a V6! 🫠

Ray. My Lincoln Navigator has the same transmission. I filled it and then started it up and ran it until it got to temperature and started running out the fill hole. Glad you’re feeling better.

VWs are famous for their plastic oil pans which break w/ almost any road object impact (including parking curbs) if you don't have a skid plate.

i think we were all worried because we hadn't seen you in such a long time. Sorry you got knocked hard by the illness, but grateful that it wasn't something far worse as I was beginning to fear was the case.

I know it worked out in this case but I developed a habit of getting the fill plug out before dropping the pan. Glad you’re feeling better!
