Tony Williams was one of the major voices in American pop. He never received the recognition he deserved or the accolades. The songs recorded by The Platters with him singing lead became staples for a generation, slow dance stock favorites, and I couldn't imagine my youth without them any more than I could imagine it without Elvis or The Beatles or The Beach Boys or many others of superlative fame. It's a shame, but I suspect that Williams was more or less ignored because of his race. It had to be hard to make these films in nightclubs where neither he nor his fellow Platters could be seated and served.

Great lyric by Otto Harbach and great music by Jerome Kern from the 1933 musical, "Roberta." It made it to the silver screen with the same name, "Roberta," in 1935, an RKO production. I absolutely agree. It is an old song from the musical "Roberta" back in 1933, and many people have recorded it before and since The Platters, but none come near matching their version. It is one of about five songs that, to me, are the best of all the great doo-wop songs. The others are "Deep Purple" and "Stardust" both by Billy Ward and His Dominoes. And also "I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos, and "Since I Don't Have You" by the Skyliners. I grew up with doo-wop and still love it.

what a poetry ! All who love are blind.. when your hearts on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes. Tears i can not hide.. when a lovely flame dies, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes. it has two meanings.

+Eko Juwana The metaphors & symbolism are spot on! Smoke from the fire/flame--at first causing a "blindness". being unable to see clearly & then causing the eyes to tear...........poetry indeed!

It was the 1950's and I was about 10 years old. My father bought me two 45's and brought them home for me. One of them was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and the other was "Who's Sorry Now" by Connie Francis. I played both of them over and over and over again. How can I forget my very first 45 rpm single?

The 50's, the 60's .. the good times, we were young and I wouldn't change my youth with today's youth. We had less "novelties" but by watching them, I am convinced that we had a better life and better time. We did a lot with the little we had and do less we all they have..

What a golden voice. The original Platters made perfect music together. When Tony left to go solo, Mercury kept releasing songs from their vault with Tony on lead until they ran out in 1962 and their contract ended. The group that had the hits from 1955-1962 was lead Tony Williams, bass Herb Reed, tenor David Lynch, baritone Paul Robi and contralto Zola Taylor. Tony was replaced by Sonny Turner, a talent in his own right, but the magic had been lost. Neither the Platters nor Tony Williams were ever as successful or produced the same sound again. It was like removing the tail fins from a Cadillac - it's never the same again. Their music was so popular and their sound so unique that, to this day, there are probably a dozen groups passing themselves off as the Platters.

The best time to grow up was the fifties. I was a teenager and this was one of my favorites. This group was the best of all times. This group was the only one that I would stop listening to Elvis and listen to them. It's sad to know that they are gone. Great group!
