I have a blue platy that has giving birth three times. I put her in a 10-gallon tank by herself so the second time she had about 18 babies, they weren't eaten up by two African dwarf frogs. The babies are about two months old, and the males are starting to chase the females. They are all the same blue since the male is blue too. They eat up dried seaweed. The type that is used for sushi.

Not sure whether to say "congrats" or "I'm sorry" so I'll just say "enjoy them" and leave you to figure out what to do with them all. They sure are happy fish now.

I’m surprised the big original ones aren’t eating their fry. What state do you live in? If you’re in Missouri, I’ll take some off your hands!

I started out with 3 random selected ones from Walmart for my 55 g. tank and within a year had about 40-50. I never put any intention in the tank setup for them to breed.

I have platys in with guppies. I'm sure that the fry I'm finding are platys. I can't tell the difference till they get a little bigger. I have 3 blue, 1 red, and 1 sunset. I'm hoping to get some pretty colors like you. Wow..

Is that a new hybrid species? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before! They look cool honestly. Have you thought about selling them? As a special platy species?

I've seen several videos showing people how to breed platies. But it's more difficult to keep them from breeding.

I’ve had the same size tank for a month and now have the same problem, every day there are more baby fish. So I was wondering about getting another tank and putting all the males in one, and all the females in the other...

You must have some nice fat and healthy top minnows eating all the live food. If you cant find anyone to take them you can continue to feed the smallest ones to your top minnows if your ok with that idea. What is happening to you has happened to me with endlers and guppies many times. That can be the problem with livebearers is where to and what to do with resulting fry. They all look great though andI bet you find a at least one good male breeder in that huge group.

What to do? What to do? I know! I know! Become good friends with 10 LFS. LOL Lack of predators and lots of food and comfortable water parameters and that's what they do. My Endlers are doing the same thing - I have hundreds now and trying to downsize.

Exactly Don! So, I'm driving to a new LFS that's about 30 away to see if I can't find a home for my platys. I really feel like there needs to be a relationship between mom & pops and local breeders/hobbyists that assists both. I need an outlet for my excess (I have very limited space for tanks) and the mom & pops should tap in to the locally bred "idea".

Did you watch Aquarium Co-ops serious on starting a fish business? A small part of it talks about doing just what you are doing. I've done what he says and he recommends giving away the first batch or two. Let them see you have good product. Be willing to take "store credit", the stores love that. After a few batches, depending on how big, the store may offer cash or might be willing to consider it. Realize that if you sell online, mentioning that to them is bad because that's competition. Same with talking about other stores, unless they suggest the concept. But do pick one store and let them be your primary relationship unless you just have too much for them. Don't haggle over price, at least at first. So much more, but that's a good beginning.
