It's impressive really, how they manage to ignore this game so much. Red Dead has literally no competition on it's genre, it is the only big cowboy game that exists and still they do nothing about it. The game is welldone and has one of the most spectacular singleplayer experiences ever, and they do nothing about it. There's so much they could add to this game that it's unbelievable that they didn't already. If you asked your grandma for ideas on what to add I bet she could give you at least 5 that are completely doable and simple solutions to the problem at hand.

Red Dead Online is one of the biggest missed opportunities in online gaming. The single player world is a masterpiece just waiting to be explored with a group of friends. It’s clear that instead of noticing the more mature audience of Red Dead, they didn’t know what to do. So they copied GTA Online businesses and gave them a Wild West coat of paint and called it a day. Not only does the game not get any content or support, but the content that it does get is just lazily copied content from GTA. RDO deserved far better.

@default How is it “not profitable” for them to make GTA Online-sized DLCs for RDO? RDR2 sold 39 MILLION copies. Sure it sold less copies than GTA V, but it’s still one of the top 10 selling games of ALL TIME. There’s a huge market share there, but Take 2 is too lazy to make quality content for it that people would actually be willing to play/pay for. RDR2 naturally has an older and more discriminating audience due to its genre, theme, and tone. As such, it requires more effort to please this audience. If RDO had heists that were even somewhat comparable to those in GTAO along with interesting things to purchase (such as properties) it could be hugely successful. But instead, Take 2/Rockstar would rather settle for half-baked, uninteresting content. Just look at how unthought out and poorly designed the Blood Money DLC was. Edit: grammar

And people that think GTA 6 is going to be any better are wrong. There will be no SP content added and it will focus purely online because THE PLAYERS have shown R* that they will accept the content they are giving right now and they will use the numbers and stats from GTA V to base the design of GTA 6. It's simple business if it's working don't change it and to them the numbers in GTA V works, in RDR they do not. Worst of all SP will not be same either as R* has become the very thing they satired in previous GTA games.

This. A huge amount of R* reputation is going to be riding on GTA6 and recent omens are... not good. Not only was the QA on the 'definitive edition' trilogy obviously terrible, but the reliance on AI upscaling suggests unwilling or unable to commit dev resourcing. GTA6 is probably still years away and nowadays the company are releasing virtually nothing other than some content for GTAO and a next-gen lick of paint. What the hell are the people in R* actually working on? Compare and contrast with Insomniac, for example, who are in the middle of turning out three Spider-Man games, a pretty cool Ratchet and Clank for the PS5 launch window and have recently announced Wolverine. The longer R* milk GTAO without doing anything meaningful elsewhere, the greater pressure and hype will build on GTA6 (assuming that's their next big title). It's hella risky.

Rdo has some great potential but they’ve been too focused on milking a 2013 title. Their communication for this title is absolutely horrendous and is part of the reason we are all very annoyed with them. Sadly I don’t trust the company to deliver great experiences anymore. For any player out there, please do not purchase the micro transactions in games like these. Not in games that cost full price or have a stand alone multiplayer version. It does more damage in the long run. I’m happy to let rdo and gto die if it means we continue to get great single player experiences. Edit: to the people saying “of course it’s the last great title because it was their last game.”.. just gonna ignore the gta trilogy remaster? Not all of rockstars games were great. Obviously that’s my opinion. We’ve seen what they’ve done with the trilogy remaster, that they’ve lost major leadership in the last 5 years, and have extremely poor communication. Not to mention their open world game model is now outdated and repetitive. So it’s not a crazy thing to think. But I hope I’m wrong.

For those who never played Red Dead Online and/or GTA Online, I will make a comparison just so you guys can understand how much LITTLE we have in RDO. Back when GTA Online launched we did not have much to do, so people would be repeating some missions, doing races, etc. One thing that some people did to pass time was going to some convenience stores to rob them. In RDO (a game about OUTLAWS) you can't even rob these stores. Yes, I know we have other things to do. But the single fact that you can't do the very BASIC of GTA/Red Dead already shows some design flaws in this game.

We have a bank robbery, but it's a pitiful mission with little payout and almost no real buildup. The fact they have those amazing worlds and they did not wrote some new stories for GTA5 and RDR2, to take advantage of that, is the perfect indicator they lost their way. In RDR2 they had that New Austin part of the map that is not used, nothing happened there. Having that, they could have written a new story to cover that area. They have the map, the assets, the tools, they just needed some good writers and actors. That would have made them hundreds of millions as it will sell for sure as the many fans of RDR2 will buy it. But they just don't have the right management. Same for GTA5. They should have used the same map and assets to make a new story. Like the old Liberty City, Vice City Stories, or even the Episodes from GTA4. That was the thing that set Rockstar games apart: the story and characters.

I want to point out one feature that was never added, which I think is a huge eye opener for this entire situation. Besides the hunting wagon, we can't buy our own luxury wagons or chariots to ride around in style. Imagine GTA Online but you can't own any cars, you can only have a delivery truck. If you notice in Red Dead Online each area has different wagons and chariots. Strawberry has small wagons for npcs who deliver crops, since its farm land. Blackwater has large fancy wagons that fit like 6 people in em. There are so many other variations that spawn in the world, but we can't own a single one. Just think about that; They won't give us a feature that essentially already in the game. All we get is a shitty hunting and bounty wagon. We cant get the beautiful 6 seater wagon with the doors on it. I would LOVE to have one of those. They could even add customizations that are already on the bounty wagon.

@@AnnieWilliams78 The horses aren't close to the GTA cars in terms of customizability nor selection though. I haven't played it in over a year so I remember you couldn't back then, you could buy a hunting and bounty wagon and couldn't customize them at all. Creativity and passion is becoming more and more a byproduct of chasing easy money rather than a “first cause” that breathes life into games. This is just a (fairly) short comment on KZitem, so I’m only highlighting one minor aspect of a much bigger topic but my point is that companies like Rockstar with their obvious attempts to rake in cash without effort at the expense of not allowing great games - and they do release some amazing games - reach even 3/4 of their potential really makes me nihilistic about the future of gaming.

Where have you been, no offense. This has sincerely been their modus operandi for a long time, like at least 6 years. Consumers have been blatantly losing the battle for video games, it's entirely driven by money and trash monetization. The only place, well not entirely but almost entirely, good experiences come from is the indy scene now. The last big release I bought at release was... Red Dead Redemption 2. And I tried for over a year to play it's online mode and stick with it, but it was totally neglected. Especially if you're the type who plays every day, it's so boring and repetitive. The one thing they did was managed to make a new player almost need to spend real money to have any fun, but new players wouldn't know the fun runs out fairly quickly for this type of game. That's all they've managed to do in RDO. They let all the hardcore players and long time players whiter and die.

Rockstar needs to realize that their golden goose (GTA5) is getting old, even the GTA online fans are getting sick of how many ports and how old GTA online is getting. There is a reason why GTA5 port trailers have been getting down voted into oblivion. GTA online can only last so much longer, and when it crashes, it will collapse faster than Rockstar can make a new game, or grow a new community. It takes Rockstar up to 5 years to make a new game, and at least to my knowledge, Rockstar has nothing new in the pipeline outside of GTA5. They have devastated the entire Red Dead community, to the point that even right now, if they started updating Red Dead Online with the same size and regularity as GTA online, the community just outright may never recover. RDO just never really made sense, it was clear from the outset that Rockstar tried to make it as much of a tedious grind as possible so that people would feel compelled to use real money, but they completely forgot to add anything that would be worth peoples time to grind for or spend money on.

I loved RDO, but you could see the writing on the wall. They were very, very slow to release new content that was worth your time, the story missions were literally left without a proper conclusion. RDO had big potentially to be a thriving online experience, but they didn’t put enough resources to make it happen. The setting was waiting to be explored and expanded, sadly after 3 years since its release I doubt that will happen, R* doesnt seem to care enough about it.

Thank you for covering this, Yong. I love this game with all my heart, it's relaxing and such a unique experience. The level of detail in the world and the depth it has is overshadowed by Rockstar's greed. I've met so many great friends on red dead online, one of my best friends used to play with me nearly every single day. Rockstar neglecting the game is heartbreaking. I'm going to miss this game so much if they close the servers.

The industry's apathy and greed has been obvious for decades. I remember the first talks of micro-transactions on the PBS TV show Computer Chronicles and feeling a sense of dread. Later, that sense of dread was confirmed with the release of the horse armor in Oblivion.

Gave up on Rockstar a couple of years ago when I realized they weren’t going to do shit with Red Dead DLC or RDO. They just kept milking GTAO. Looks like it’s still the same as back when I gave up on them. Not surprised but still disappointed because Rockstar used to be my favorite publisher. I always knew that when I would get a new Rockstar game that I was going to be blown away. Now… Whatever. Just another fall from grace.

Rockstar is a shadow of its former self. Rdr2 was really it's last great hurrah. The innovators and developers who made so many great games years ago are probably gone. Look at the remasters they did just recently, a complete clusterfuck! If this is the best they can currently do, do you honestly believe rockstar can deliver good new games. Even if they do deliver GTA6, do you think the company will change, or just repeat for the next ten years exactly what they did with GTA5

Red Dead will NEVER make as much money as GTA, unless they decide to add buyable dragons and other mythical creatures like WOW does. Rockstar doesn't make games anymore, they make cash grabs, so they shouldn't even have made this Online mode to begin with.

What I’m sick of is having to listen to the horror stories my sister tells me about Red Dead Online. Rockstar doesn’t do ANYTHING to punish the racist cult that uses the game to “rally”. It’s disturbing and absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the many times rockstar has refused to take action against players who are very clearly in need of a penalty. I’m not saying perma-ban them, but I shouldn’t have to see my little sister upset five days a week because asshole neck beards won’t stop harassing her. All she does is try to take care of her horses and these people are so unbelievably awful to her. I think rockstar needs to either get wise and fix this, or they need to be sued. Some of the things I’ve seen people say on that game delve into abusive and racist language and that shouldn’t be used ever, let alone towards someone who told you to leave them alone because they were just minding their business and you shot their horse for no reason. Like this games community is utter shit

Asking big tech for more censorship is not wise. Like the government, once you give them such power they never let up. "Banned for 2 weeks for misgendering". "Banned permanently for criticizing China", etc.

I remember getting on the online game, creating my character and just saying to myself; wow i cant wait to do some Heists, robbing random places, finding secrets and have some highly rewarding bounty hunting done. Nope, no robbing, no heist at all, and the bounty hunting is fun, but the money is laughably low. Was so hoping for updates to fix stuff, nope never any update making the game worth it. Got bored of it after a month when i realised i couldnt get any outfits (by the way, barely any outfits) i wanted for a decent price without spending real life money.

Exactly the experience I had and I even went back last year to start again after playing some of the single player campaign only to find it had got worse not better with everything absurdly expensive and payouts pennies in comparison. We didn't want GTAO in the west we wanted what the single player offered but to experience it with friends, that's it, and they refused to deliver.

What makes it worse is day 1 players like me couldn't even do any of the roles since they came with a later update, so it was pretty much do stranger missions or pvp or hunt (but the payouts for hunting were also nerfed so not even that)
