It’s quite humorous from a viewer’s…point of view that in the goal to try and patch together this small town of cutthroats and backstabbing warmongers, Sop ends up getting made into one by the end of his journey even though all he wanted was probably some drinking buddies. In this way the game sort of continued the cycle, much like the gameplay loop of constantly restarting in a world inhabited by pricks. If it weren’t for each subsequent playthrough being in a different universe you could almost say that this is how each new faction you see got to be like this. It’s no wonder now why the side of good lost, the villains at least waited until they took over first to start bickering. With all that said…Shame about the pacing…and mostly everything else about the game.

43:31 I only played Zombasite but it really feels like a sequel to Depths of Peril, since it shares its clan-leading mechanic and set of victory conditions while deepening, changing or adding stuff. Though I do have a similar feeling from playing it. It has tons of interesting ideas but leaves much to be desired. The fact that it looks and sounds terribly dull doesn't help. Still, I don't remember another game where my clan was invaded by an assassin sent by forces of evil, I returned before he could assassinate anyone and killed him with the help of a nearby NPC, but then I received a new timed mission saying that the aformentioned NPC got poisoned by the blade of a vile assassin and asking that I venture onto the 5th or 6th floor of an unexplored dungeon in an unknown region to kill some poison towers to gather their wood so that an antidote could be made before he dies.

It's nice to see more Snake while waiting for the inexorably finished version of the 8-hour (or however much that one's going to be) Yakuza epic. I absolutely love highly dynamic, responsive worlds that feed of the base far-reaching mechanics (e.g. The Last Federation), but there's something that I get from different reviews of this... series of the games: despite great dynamic system to build upon they quickly degrade into a slog because of the underlying basic gameplay loop. Ruling as the (inevitably) ruthless warlord standing amidst burning world, probably bullying some of the other survivor groups to be your thralls is pretty metal, all thing considered. I didn't know that I needed Ross Scott-esque trophy ending, but man, that'd hit the spot. Cheers.

It's nice that somebody is actually taking a look at Soldak's oldest game. Most of what I see about Speeler's games is usually about Din's Curse or Drox Operative. I spent maybe 80-90 hours on DoP a while ago, eventually finishing the game (the row of bosses out in the wilderness) two times. DoP is definitely a game where you want to figure out something broken and then beat the game that way, since the game is pretty unforgiving. And the game recognizes that. The companions are quite overpowered for instance. At least in terms of raw damage output. They also respawn almost infinitely. On the other hand I have often run into bosses that very easily make mincemeat of both of us without much effort. Or how about maps that are filled with almost exclusively Champions and Elites. Or just Spawn Gates everywhere. Even better, three or four bosses behind my character as s/he is running away screeching, waiting for his/her bodyguard to respawn. I have quite a few dead-ended characters lying around. Sure, one can start another game with the same character, but that always felt wrong to me. In any case, one of these got stuck because food poisoning hade made basic healing items so expensive that I could only afford one or two after a while. The solution to said predicament was on a lower level of a dungeon. Level 2 or 3 of said dungeon was blocked by a sea of Champions and Elites. The end. But maximum abuse of Lesser Heal in one case and Ice Storm in the other eventually assured success. The first was pretty static while the second was me running around in circles while raining ice continously and waiting for my Rogue/Warrior-companion to respawn for the nth time. Overall pretty rough. The Covenant-system is interesting and it's nice that it makes use of normally useless loot. But it always seems to play out the same. Keep them away with loot gifts until you are strong enough, then kill the more hostile ones while continuing to shower the rest of them with gifts. I was never really interested in finishing the game by way of the faction system, so I was just out adventuring while trying to keep things calm at home. For the most part the random interactions of world events result in somewhat random piecemeal happenings for the most part. It's random, which is to say, usually not interesting. On the other hand I once had a full-scale invasion of the town take place. It was something like four or five encounters playing out all across Jorvik with all of the surviving Covenants and characters involved. That is something worth noting: The Covenants are what gives the town its resilience (I mean aside from the town characters being immortal). The villages in Din's Curse by comparison are flimsy and useless without the hero.

What do you mean you haven't played a hack n' slash? Don't all those sessions of dungeon world count? This more lackadaisical take on Playing is very refreshing and definitely highlights the aspect of how the videos focus on the pure experience of playing the game and your journey through them, and not so much the external factors. I think both formats compliment each other, and I can imagine they make the video making process more exciting. Speaking of exciting, video award times! Narrative experience The four charachters don't just highlight different mechanical ways of playing, but also your journey through the game and how you learn to tame and understand it. Some of us don't know the game either, so we sorta share a journey and level of understanding. Makes it quite compelling. Pastiche not parody Ross' game dungeon is clearly an inspiration of both the tone and attitude around this video, it's laid back and even more personal. The inspiration is clear outside of the obvious references, but it never feels like a drawn out gimmick or a lack of creativity. You're dead, dead, dead. Never has consistant dying been such a trivial and casual part of a successful game plan to conquer the world. Nice callback to boot!

Hey Snake, this is a bit of a weird one but I think you'd find something worthwhile in Cruelty Squad. Two games in two days? Snake you're too kind. Though I have to wonder if that kindness is out of virtue or out of the same muscle dumbness that you claim to share with mighty Stredge. Got to say though, it's nice to see another person take a look at that era's isometric games, it was a fun time for experimentation to be sure and since you mentioned Sonic 3D Blast, I now have to watch the video. I didn't know about Soldak's game library but seeing them on this video, seems like I missed some of those fun jank games that a european would love, given what out of the continent. Maybe the 4 classes could be a character swap to maximize the outcome of the mission, or putting less missions and making them more rewarding but every factiin can accept it and it becomes a race on who will finish it first... And these are just ideas... If the author has a big budget and a squad of seasoned game devs, it could be a polished gem
