I’ve played the piano before, so the harp isn’t the first instrument that I’ve played where both hands may be needed to play a song. Still, this video was pretty helpful to me, thank you for the advice! :)

I purchased one of your Late Beginner videos Christy-Lyn thinking I was ready for it, then was humbled, realizing it was too difficult for me. I was very frustrated with myself. So I then purchased three of your Beginner videos(it was a terrific deal for the bundle) and I cannot tell you enough how much I am enjoying them, and learning from them! They are AMAZING! Anyone reading this comment, that has a harp and is considering purchasing her lessons do it! She explains everything in detail so much! I am forever grateful finding your channel, and I know I will continue in years to come, following you and learning from you! 😊💕

wooow the 3rd advice is so unusual. I think that I agree and I will try to learn music this way now.

Yes, first instrument ever. Hands together very difficult, I had to come up with my own way of analyzing what each hand did and when. Don't have to do that now, but it was necessary in the beginning.

The "vertical" vs "horizontal" image is VERY helpful! I worked so hard on a peppy tune in the right hand...and now am finding it hard to learn the left hand. I'll keep your "vertical' suggestion in mind!

The harp is the first instrument I have played with treble clef and bass clef notes. I have tinkered with piano and key boards with just my right hand. I played a clarinet many many years ago but no bass clef notes.

i've played piano for seven years, and you can prolly tell i've done hands together for a long time. it's a little weird with the right hand on the harp because your first finger is higher, not lower. left hand is still first higher fourth/fifth lower :]

I played piano for years, then been on hiatus with piano for close to 20 years. In between I’ve mostly played mandolin. Even on piano I am noticing my hands are NOT cooperating together, so learning harps with both hands has been tough and a win-win. I am guilty of mistakes 1 and 2 , working on the vertical measure by measure approach to fix mistake 3. thanks for the videos! Really enjoying the tips

It will be helpful for sure, but you'll find the harp is very different. It's been harder than I thought, but I'm getting there. The right hand fingering is the complete opposite of piano, and that takes a little "brain flipping" until it feels natural. Good luck -- you'll get it -- don't get discouraged.

Like you after 30 years of piano playing I started to study harp, well... it's completely a new experience! At the beginning the strangest thing is that on harp you don't have to old pressures a key to play a long note. My mind needs some days for adapting... and for the first 4/5 month I must study the pieces very very slowly, learning by heart helps me a lot... it's difficult but is a wonderful instrument, I love it

All of the instruments I have played previously required both hands- the piano, clarinet, and guitar, This video is very helpful, because the harp is a bit different from what I know. And you are so right - I want to hear that melody!

Definitely! I know there will also be some adjustments you'll have to make along the way in terms of orientating yourself to the instrument - Christy-Lyn actually made a video about it! kzitem.info/news/bejne/kql8k6KIkIdqqG0&pp=ygUNaGFycCB0byBwaWFubw%3D%3D Very excited for you to get starting when your first harp arrives! xx Nicole, LTH Team member

Hi Christy-Lyn, thanks again for this beautiful video full of good tips! As for your questions: yes, the harp is the first instrument I’m playing with both hands (except for the flute when I was young;-) Keep up the good work! Lovely greetings!

I am in my 70's and have recently started learning harp playing. I have played piano for 60 years; I started learning organ in my 50's. So I learned to use both hands and both feet simultaneously, with much difficulty overcoming piano habits. e.g., designating my left side for bass and right side for treble. I found that much more challenging than I imagined. Likewise, I am very challenged with learning harp technique. The music looks so simple and I somehow thought it would be simpler to play! My main strength and weakness is stubborness.

My first instrument was a Kalimba and you do play it with both hands. I just started with the harp so I am still not sure if it´s going to be as difficult for me as with the Kalimba but I am very grateful you putting out so much great content!

I first learned to read treble clef on the violin when I was 10. Now I am in my 30's and struggling to learn bass clef and play two hands together. Okay, struggle is a strong word. I really appreciate the suggestion of going vertical- I am totally guilty of going horizontal when learning a piece!

yes the harp (in fact it is a clarsach) is the first instrument I've played and the only instrument. It is a bit hard at first to play with both hands but like you said it is good to practice thoroughly. The last mistake is very smart and I'll definitely be trying that. Thank you so much.

I started with piano as a young girl. I also played a clarinet and a little guitar so I have used both hands though the music for each instrument was different. Thanks.

I have played piano since the 60’s. I find playing the harp challenging with 2 hands due the difference in the way the strings are(vertical) piano. (Horizontal) and the right hand plays the notes with the hand in a different orientation on the harp to what you would on the piano.Once I got a grasp on that it is getting better. You are correct in when you play one hand or other you can play the tune, and the struggle with two together. Trying to work on this with your videos. Thank you.

Thank you very much for this video! It’s like a revelation :-D I’m so guilty of mistake number 3. I directly approached a new piece by learning it measure by measure with both hands together instead of half the piece separately, struggling to put it together afterwards... It’s amazing what a big difference that makes. Thank you for being such a great inspiration!

P.S. I learned to play the clarinet when I was a child and have been singing in choirs. So I have some musical background but without having to read two lines simultaneously. I’ve been teaching myself to play the harp for 10 months now and I simply love and enjoy it!

I got my lever harp two days ago and I wanted to try out the levers yesterday. I tried the lever for the lowest note, but when I stopped using the lever feature for that note it would still strangely buzz when I plucked the string. Do you know why this might be happening?
@LearningtheHarp

Good question! Perhaps you didn’t put the lever fully back into its position, and it was still slightly touching the string?

@LearningtheHarp

If it’s a cheap harp, sometimes the lever has to be carefully placed back just the right amount so that it doesn’t touch the string, not all the way back. Have you checked that it’s not touching the string when it buzzes?
