Part 2! Project Carlsbad is coming along nicely. We get a few fluids changed in this episode and I'm finally getting into full swing on working on this E38. It'll look great when it's done :).

Great thing that you are Working on e38 loving it. About the transmission, i Might be wrong but you should also go on sport mode and manual Gear shifting to get proper Oil level.

Hmmm, I'll have to research that a bit. I've changed fluids on many transmissions, several with sport mode, and never heard that. To the best of my knowledge, sport mode just has the computer change shift points to make it a bit more aggressive and doesn't change anything physically in the transmission. As long as I go through all the gears a few times, it should be adequate to ensure it pulls up as much fluid as it needs so I know how much to fill. I'd think the same with manual. I did check it again after a week of driving and didn't need to top it off again. That might be another "safety" check. But, that said, one of the things I love about YT is learning new stuff. Thanks for commenting!

i am from the uk and have a 728i e38 it drives superbly but there is a clunking sound coming from turning the steering wheel any clues on what it could be. i got all the suspension parts and going to get bc coilovers and got the fuel filter .
@rollorescue1582

If you've got all the suspension parts already, then there is a decent chance you'll find it (i'd start with control arms). Although, if it's showing up when steering it could also be hubs (less likely) or steering rack(more likely). If you can, get it up securely on lift or jack stands so you can turn it and have someone turn the wheel back and forth and see if you can pinpoint location.

I’d let it go for pretty cheap tbh. Feel free to DM via Facebook or Twitter what you think might work for you if you’d like.

trans fluid level has to be measured at a certain trans temp. From memory the trans has to be between 30c and 50c to get the correct level.
@rollorescue1582

Yeah, should have mentioned that. I did let it warm up to operating temp when I filled it finally.

@@rollorescue1582 Operating temp is way too high to do trans fluid level.. The level changes alot depending on the temperature. Use a scanner to monitor the trans temps, and check it again at the correct temp.

@@zerotohero7449 I didn't say that quite right, the engine was more or less up to temp (ish), the trans was warm to the touch, but not so hot I couldn't put my hand on it. Now that you've brought it up, and I have INPA working, I believe I can monitor trans temp...I'll do that before I start running it. I've not driven it really since I've done the fluid change and the volume of fluid was pretty close to what I expected.

@@rollorescue1582 Yea, better safe than sorry. You've done everything to such a high standard that it would be a shame to fall at the last hurdle. I learned the hard way when I did my first trans service on a bmw. I overfilled it by nearly a litre - the level changes a huge amount depending on temperature. I really enjoy your channel.

@@zerotohero7449 I really appreciate it. Goodness knows there is always so much to learn and I really appreciate people dropping the knowledge gained from their experiences. Another great vid. That's great you could get the extensions for the quick jacks. I didn't know they were even a thing. You can never have too many stands as a safety system. Never trust anything that gravity may decide with no notice to take over. Good to know they'll lift the Landy as well. I have an 01 Range Rover and something like that would be good as a temporary option rather than doing everything required for a more permanent 2 post hoist. The parts are expensive but the cars are worth it. So well worth doing, especially on a 7. Did you check the tool kit from that junker 7? The jacked up 7 is brilliant! Lol I'll have to check out the link for more info on it. 112,000 miles on these engines & gearboxes should be like new (if looked after property). It's really nothing at all for these cars. Don't forget to clean up the throttle body as well. Check the MAF as well. May as well do it all properly as like you said, it will likely all be as it was from factory. It's also worth changing the battery if it is an old one. I can't remember if you said in your previous episode if it was new or not. Good job. 🍻

Right on, can never be too safe. I did look in the kits in the 7's I went through and they were all gone :(. But, I have a complete one accept for the cloth part. Even have the first aid kit in the back seat! Good points on the electronics. The battery was replaced the day before I picked it up, so it's brand new. I am also planning a part of a future episode that'll to through the electronics a bit (DME, etc.) and pull the plugs, check for corrosion and then do a little deoxit D5 cleaning. I'll definitely check the MAF when I start tearing into the top of the engine. Thanks for watching :)

Any issues after changing the transmission fluid?? I have a 2001 e38 sport with 116k miles. I think it has never gotten it's fluid change. You know some people say to change it and some say not to do it or you'll ruin the transmission. What was your outcome??? Any difference??? That's a job I am going to knock out next. Thanks for your videos 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

None so far. Drives like a dream, and I would say it seems to be shifting more smooth, although it wasn't really rough to begin with. A bit clunky here and there, but so far so good. Maybe I'll do a KZitem Short on the topic, but I believe a "lifetime" transmission fluid isn't a thing. They have to be changed, and it just means BMW planned on selling owners a new transmission when it burned up. I'd never flush a transmission that has 113k on the original fluid, and it's very possible that just doing a drain/refill will create a problem. But, I figure if I don't change, then I'm guaranteeing it will fail at some point. If I do, then there is a chance it'll make a problem show up and it'll suck, but there's also a chance it'll greatly extend the life. But that is my opinion for sure, and not advice :).

Just my opinion but there every transmission eventually will need a fluid change or will end up springing a leak. So there has to be a way to maintain such issues. It never hurts to have never fluids in any car. Bmw lies about such things so you will bring the car to them and pay them to work on it for you lol

I have to consider a transmission flush after the previous owner did a fluid change and the shifting is noticeably 'un-smooth'
@rollorescue1582
3 жыл бұрын
@@broknsword23 ah man, sorry to hear that. Hopefully it isn't a big deal, but you never know what they did or what fluid they used. I'd be weary of a flush (where you actually actively push fluid through the trans to exchange it all), but draining and filling it back up with the right procedure will exchange about 1/2 the fluid. I'd highly recommending using the more expensive ZF trans fluid (or redline that some folks recommend) specific for this transmission. I understand they can be a bit finnicky. Best of luck!
