This wasn't a given though. Only if the disc had both a CD-ROM section for the game and a CD audio section for standard 44100kHz PCM audio. Different standards. This was only feasible on smaller / earlier games as the audio would take up so much of the disc. It became much more efficient to compress it to a proprietary format and include it within the normal data files and it be 100% CD-ROM. You can't play CD-ROMs in an audio CD player.

It didn't work with most games though. Storing the music as red-book audio on a non CD-ROM portion of the disc was too costly, and could take up most of the disc. It was far more common, especially later into the PS1's life, to store the music in a compressed, proprietary format as part of the game's regular data files and have the disc as 100% CD-ROM. If you did this with all the games you had, you must have somehow had only games that used this method. I'm not saying you're lying or misremembering, but...

I discovered this trick by accident as a child when I put one of my PS1 games in my Sega Saturn and then it started to play tunes in the music player lol

Most of us knew this already. I like playing Ridge Racer and then taking it out of the PS1 to put another music CD to listen to my own songs.

@Shawn Rasmussen The video is talking about a very specific type of old PS1 ((and even sega saturn, PC and dreamcast)) game. Early on in the console's life cycle some company's ((if the game didn't take up much of the disc space)) would put high quality audio music on to the disc too, which could be played inside a CD player. The poster of this video has also been an idiot and not mentioned you should NOT play track 1, as that is the game's data track and the soundtracks will always start on track 2. If you want to look into what games had this, just type in Redbook Audio discs, again it wasn't just the ps1 that did it either, ANY CD based console or pc game had the ability, even the pc engine's CD addon.

@Shawn Rasmussen some games would let you play your own music while you played the game.

you can literally do this on your PS1 as well. The bios menu for it will always have two options, one for the memory card file management and the other for playing music. Almost every ps1 owner knew this.

This was what also happened if your game didn’t read properly. Your PlayStation would think it’s a CD and it would load up the soundtrack. That’s when you would remove the cd and try to clean the scratches, put toothpaste on it and put the disc in the freezer. All sorts of weird fixes were being told and we tried all of them. Eventually it’d work and the game would load.

It wasn't a secret. I remember playing battle arena toshinden in my CD player. Even Castlevania had a cool song with a message from alucard if you played it in a CD player.

Yes, we knew that. It works with ANY game CD. In fact, Castlevania: SotN had a message from Alucard that could only be accessed by putting the game disc in a CD player.

Games that store music as files on the disc (compressed to save space or uncompressed simply to have seamless looping) can often still be played on a computer depending on the formats the music is stored in.
